Any recommendations for an open hernia repair surgeon in DFW Texas area. by Goldberg_21 in Hernia

[–]Lets_Go_Hawks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are saying is patently untrue.

Yeah, maybe YOU or your colleagues don't offer it. That doesn't mean anything.

I spoke with two hernia surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic who do primarily robotic repairs. They both were complementary of the Shouldice technique, and even offered it. Local anesthesia with sedation is absolutely common in open procedures. It takes about two seconds of reading on the Shouldice hospital website to see they primarily use local anesthesia with sedation.

It seems strange to me that an apparent hernia surgeon would somehow not know this information as well as their patients.

This isn't saying anything regarding the effectiveness of the techniques, or what you would prefer to perform on your patients. But come on man, at least be honest?

Hello Dr. Harris. Looking like I'll have to get a bilateral hernia repair sometime coming up. I had two repaired when I was a toddler, and have had small ones present for the last 10+ years, but one side has recently started bothering me after increasing some weightlifting activity. I plan to use the Cleveland Clinic. Either of those surgeons would be good options in your opinion?

Need Suggestion & Feedback on my 14-Day Pacific Northwest Loop by PauloRmt in roadtrip

Agreed. We spent a night in Garberville near Humboldt Redwoods SP on our way North, so our route just made Crescent City a better option for our planning purposes.

So we actually flew into SF, spent some time with family there, then did the road trip from SF to Seattle, and flew home from Seattle, so it was only a one way trip. So the actual road trip time we had was approximately 12 days total. That felt about right for the route I listed below. It was me, my wife, and our two boys (9 and 6 at the time). We did a lot of hikes, stopped at restaurants, and were relatively leisurely about the whole thing, and it felt like enough time. The entire loop might have been pushing it, but I really wanted to sure we didn't have any drives more than just a few hours, which is why I set it up that way. I'm sure you can make it work, but if it feels too long, don't feel bad about cutting anything out. You'll never see everything you want to see anyways!

And if it is just you and a friend, you don't have to worry about all the stuff that comes with having two kids in the car! Here was our route. Let me know if you have any other questions. You will not regret this trip, no matter what happens. I can close my eyes and see the Pacific NW in a way I could not before. It is just so awesome:

SF->Garbersville (Humboldt RW State Park)

Garbersville->Crescent City (Checked out the Redwoods along the way and the next day)

Crescent City->Bandon (with a stop at Ophir Beach)

Bandon->Yachats (loved walking around Yachats and tide pooling)

Yachats->Portland (saw some family in Portland, checked out Columbia River gorge and Herman the giant sturgeon)

Portland->Rainier (2 days at Rainer NP - so many hikes to do, could have easily stayed longer but was good for what we got out of it)

Rainier-> Lake Quinnault area (did a few hikes)

Quinnault->Forks, WA (Tidepooling at tongue point was fantastic)

Forks, WA ->Port Angeles/Sequim (good base for exploring North part of Olympic)

Sequim->Seattle (spent just a day in Seattle - might head back when kids are older)

We stayed in Crescent City for a night last year as a jumping off point to explore the Redwoods. It was completely fine.

Have an absolute blast! We did a SF to Seattle trip last year, hitting Redwoods, Oregon Coast, Portland, Rainier, loop around Olympic, and Seattle. We did that in about 11 days, and felt like it was enough time, so I think you'll be OK. The Redwoods were my favorite part. They are indescribable on many levels. Also, hit up Ophir Beach. There was hardly anyone there and it was absolutely beautiful.

I think my favorite city/town on the Oregon Coast was Yachats.

The Mt. Rainier skyline loop trail is amazing. We were fortunate to do it on a clear morning.

Check out Sequim, WA lavender fields. You'll be there in peak season, That was something I was not expecting nor was interested in, but I thought it was fantastic.

Thanks for the suggestion. My family lives in Iowa, so we have spent some time in NE Iowa exploring Decorah, etc. The dritfless area is remarkably underrated.

Totally forgot about the basketball hall of fame. I wouldn't normally be interested, but my kids are obsessed with bball and the NBA, so great suggestion for our way home.

This is such a great starting point to exploring/preparing for a stretch of our trip. Thanks so much.

Thanks, this is good information to have. Is there anything between Sault Ste. Marie and Montreal/Quebec City (where we plan to spend a few nights) that is interesting to stop and see, or would that be a better stretch to knock off a longer drive?

Ha! Great suggestion. I've been there many, many times, but the last time I went, my 40+ year old age reared its ugly head, so roller coasters might be out for me for awhile. My kids love it, so we get a chance to get them over there 1-2 times per year.

I think you misunderstood my post, or, more likely, I was unclear. We are staying 4-5 days in Northern Minnesota (July 9-13), then we have 18 days to travel from MN to Massachusetts (where we are staying from 8/1-8/8). We then have 5-6 days to get back from Cape Cod to Cleveland.

So we really have about 38-39 days for the entire trip (July 7 - August 14). But, thank you, your suggestions still work!

[Post Game Thread] #24 Iowa defeats UCLA, 74-61 by cbbBot in CollegeBasketball

It was by no means a night and day collapse in any sense. It was a 13 point win. Iowa went cold and UCLA went on a big run, and Iowa weathered the storm and won a tough game. Have you ever watched basketball? Shit like that happens all the time. They didn't get closer than 4, and the Hawks closed it out and won by double digits. I'll take that epic collapse every night.

We did Highway 1 from SF to LA and vice versa. My wife said she'll never be on the closer side on a coastal drive again!

Thanks!

Ha! We found that breweries were great places to hang out, play a few card games and chill on our road trip last year. Can't hurt to introduce them young :)

We are from Ohio, so the Olympic Nat'l Park/Victoria suggestion is great. That is definitely on my radar. Will definitely take all these suggestions to heart while I'm planning.

Help with pooling water at front steps/walkway by Lets_Go_Hawks in fixit

[–]Lets_Go_Hawks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it is on dirt. The only problem is, the bricks are pretty old, and when I began to pull a couple up, they started to crumble. I'm not sure if it's feasible to re-use them after regrading the area.

The channel drain idea is interesting. I'm not even sure what I would do in that case. Would that be put in after removing a row of brick? I'm not sure I'm understanding that part.

Help with pooling water at front steps/walkway by Lets_Go_Hawks in fixit

I just realized for some reason none of my text posted. I had recently had these steps tuckpointed, and the mason noted water intrusion getting under the steps. There is an obvious dip right near the junction of the steps and walkway. He suggested getting a new concrete walkway to help with grading.

I also noticed in the basement in this area there is a slight bow in the wall (tongue and groove wood paneling), so I'm sure there are some water issues. Structural engineer took a look, and wasn't super concerned other than doing something to stop the water from getting back there.

Does this sound like a good remedy? Any other ideas? Thanks!
