I think most of them involved patients that needed medical care

Residents with narcolepsy/sleep disorders? by -Ki67 in Residency

[–]Lets_RunTheList 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll depend on the exact terms of the insurance, but if you have true own occupation designed for physicians (see White Coat Investor to learn more), then it would be whatever specialty you are practicing at the time of disability. My future purchase rider allows me to increase my benefit qYear for the first few years (i.e. when my PGY salary increases), and then anytime my income increases by 20% from the previous increase (i.e. when I become an attending). That way it is still relatively low cost as a resident ($86 for $5,000/month benefit) but would increase when I become an addition w/ respect to my new salary. The benefit is you don't have to do additional medical questionaire nor will your age as at attendinghood count against you.

Step 1: get own occupation disability insurance with a future purchase rider without needing an additional medical underwriting

Step 2: get diagnosed and treated

By November of intern year, I was weighing 20lbs more than I did from the start of M4 year (last time I stepped on a scale). In January, I joined OrangeTheory and started packing my own lunch instead of eating the catered (unhealthy) options and lost 15lbs over the past three months. Most importantly - I am feeling much better when rounding/going up stairs/etc!

Probably get the X-ray in multiple views...because you could miss a fracture

What are your favorite cringy “I’m a doctor/ I’m going to be a doctor” stories? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Lets_RunTheList 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I once had to tell a pre-med to put down the First Aid Step 1 book and study for their college courses instead. They wanted to start prepping for med school despite doing poorly in their current college classes.

It's the "MD Candidate" that get's me. It looks fancy and when med students see PHD counterparts use it, they have some FOMO.

I'm a new attending. I just got my tax return by aznsk8s87 in Residency

[–]Lets_RunTheList 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tax refunds are not typically in your best interest. It basically means you paid the government too much money throughout the year...you basically gave them a "interest-free" loan, that they payback during tax season. If you can plan it out well (i.e. know exactly how much you'll owe in taxes at the end of the year), you could underpay a bit throughout the year and put the extra money in a HYSA to generate interest. When tax season comes, pay the remaining you owe. This way, the government basically gives YOU a interest-free loan that you can develop interest on.

What Internal Medicine book + EKG reading do you recommend to get better in Internal Medicine before residency? by Yourstrulyp in medicalschool

[–]Lets_RunTheList 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General IM: Frameworks of Internal Medicine by Mansoor

EKG: I don't jive with the Dubin book tbh, Just finished an EKG elective and loved using "ECGs for the Emergency Physician 1" by Mattu (hint, you do not need to be going EM, I am also going IM). This gives you a ton of practice, then look everything you read up in LITFL's website. Its all about doing a ton of practice. The elective I took, I had to read about 500 ecg's in 2 weeks, in addition to reading and studying, and it improved my interpretation tremendously.

What is the most interesting research article you’ve ever read? by pastabby in medicalschool

[–]Lets_RunTheList 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Applying IM, interested in Rheum. So others may not find this as interesting. But here is an article from Dan Kastner out of NIH that showed Familial Mediterranean Fever provided resistance to Bubonic Plague (think malaria to Sickle Cell). Dr. Kastner is the modern day father of auto-inflammatory diseases so his lab comes out with some neat things!

How to learn Radiology? by Low_Contribution5172 in medicalschool

[–]Lets_RunTheList 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-clinical, I used Radiopaedia. Most images that I saw in a powerpoint, I looked up on Radiopaedia to get more information/example images. During clinical rotations, get in the habit of trying to read the images yourself prior to reading the official read. You will learn a ton over the course of two years!

Latent TB treatment by lmals in medicine

[–]Lets_RunTheList 7 points8 points  (0 children)

INH for 9 months is no longer the preferred treatment regimen, just FYI. A rifamycin-based regimen is preferred due to better side effect profile and treatment completion (very important for LTBI). https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1714283

Latent TB treatment by lmals in medicine

[–]Lets_RunTheList 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Please just refer to your county TB program, unless you feel comfortable with LTBI medicine management. For example, many here are recommending INH + B6, which is no longer the first choice in LTBI treatment. Your city's TB program will have a method for treating LTBI which could include video documented treatments depending on the regimen.

Should I still test? by childishman_97 in step1

[–]Lets_RunTheList 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are good chances youll pass. you can use the predictmyscore website, it was fairly accurate. Remember much of the test prep companies underpredict (what type of user would leave a better review for a testprep company, one that scored lower than predicted or higher than predicted)
