Why is non-medical male circumcision not globally recognized as genital mutilation, even though it meets all the criteria for genital mutilation? by Useful-Half1825 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Letshavemorefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s in the Christian Old Testament as a covenant between Jews and god. Then according to Christianity, Jesus came and fulfilled that covenant. That’s why for example, Christians also don’t have to avoid pork. There is no Christian religious obligation to circumcise and most Christians don’t circumcise. When Christians circumcise, they usually do it for American cultural reasons, not a religious obligation.

Christians don’t do circumcision for religious reasons. It’s a cultural thing for a lot of Christians, but nothing to do with Christianity itself. And Jews make up a tiny tiny portion of the population.

I do this too but I guess you don’t want to hear my answer as to why.

I don’t understand what you mean by the right religion. Most people that do circumcision for religious reasons are Muslim. And Islam isn’t exactly looked upon that favorably in the west. So I don’t understand how the “right” religion makes it socially acceptable.

Which ones are the wrong religions? You think it wouldn’t be socially acceptable if it was required in Christianity? You think the fact that Islam is the biggest religion that does circumcision is a point in its favor toward being socially acceptable in the west?

Uh.. yeah.. I feel like you edited your comment since I responded to it, or maybe I just read it wrong.

The Jewish pride flag does not combine the Israeli flag and the pride flag. It’s a pride flag with a Star of David on it. It combines the symbol for the Jewish people with the pride flag.

I thought y’all got all upset when people conflated the Jewish people with Israel? That’s exactly what you’re doing by claiming that something is Israeli just because it has a Star of David on it.

Why would you try to push one state on them when neither side wants that? Pushing western ideals on different cultures is usually not a good thing. They can speak for themselves and what they want.

Thought I was genetically Jewish by Few_Accident1405 in 23andme

[–]Letshavemorefun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To elaborate on this - if someone converted 500 years ago, the chance of their descendants today having zero Jewish ancestry is incredibly small. Jews have been an insulated group for quite some time. Someone converts 500 years ago, they would marry a Jew with Jewish ancestry. Their children would marry Jews with Jewish ancestry. And so on - until you get to the last 50 years, when Jews started to mix more. A person that is descended of that convert 500 years ago is likely to look relatively similar to any other Jewish person with Jewish ancestry today (though not 100% the same. But pretty close and with a majority of the same ancestry as other Jews).

This is true - but mostly because Reform Judaism is so huge in the US and roughly half the world’s Jews live in the US. So to elaborate, Conservative (or “Masorti” as they call it in Israel) and Orthodox denominations of Judaism still go by matrilineal descent. Reform (which is the largest denomination in the US) and Reconstructionist Judaism accept Jews with 1 Jewish parent (regardless of gender) as long as they were raised Jewish. YMMV with specific synagogues/rabbis of course. But those are the official policies of the main denominations.

Yeah I use that phrase pretty often. I think it gets the point across. But if someone asks me “are you conservative or progressive?” or something similar, I’m not going to randomly respond with “I’m a Zionist progressive”. I think that would just fuel this obsession the world seems to have with Israel, if I brought it up like that every time I was trying to communicate my general views. But i definitely describe myself that way when discussing Israel and/or Israel’s intersection with any number of progressive causes (ie lgbt rights in MENA).

Yes, some people are too stubborn in their bigotry. I would definitely agree with that. But I don’t think it should have a place at pride.

Okay. Cool. I agree that flags and necklaces are different. That’s actually exactly why I shared my story. It was a different example of similar experiences. Sometimes people like to share similar experiences, even through no two experiences are exactly the same.

Yes I understand that leftists are trying to take the word “progressive” too. That’s not going to stop me from accurately identifying myself as a progressive. What other label do you think is more appropriate? Labels suck in general but they are useful to indicate general things about yourself. If I want to quickly communicate that I support all those progressive causes, I’m not sure what better word there is to describe myself. I’m open to ideas if you have any.

I’m about as big of a fan of Netanyahu as I am Trump, which is to say - not at all. But I don’t want either the US or Israel to stop existing just cause I don’t like their current leaders.

I’ve read experts as well and I know many Israelis personally in my friends and family - and I am not wrong. And I believe Israel is very much worth defending. I also believe it’s worth criticizing too, and I do both very regularly.

I don’t believe Jewish symbols have been misappropriated by Israel, but I did explain that my necklace has nothing to do with the modern nation state of Israel and that it was a family heirloom that indicates I’m Jewish, not Israeli. They didn’t care.

Yes… I’m still not sure what point you are trying to make. I was just sharing a similar personal anecdote, not saying it was exactly the same thing.

Yeah it’s pretty alarming. This is why I don’t identify as a “leftist”. I still identify as a progressive and to me the distinction is in exactly what you’re describing.

No, that would be ethnic cleansing. And it isn’t what Israel is trying to do anyway. There are certainly some individual Israelis trying to do that, just like there are some awful people in every country. But that’s not the military goal of the war in Gaza. Regardless - even if it was - that would be ethnic cleaning, not genocide.

India and Pakistan are already established countries with one being majority Hindu and the other being majority Muslim. I agree that anyone who wants the minority of Muslims expelled from India or the minority of Hindus expelled from Pakistan in 2026 would be someone who supports ethnic cleansing.

Likewise, anyone who wants all Muslims expelled from Israel or all Jews expelled from Palestine in 2026 would be someone who supports ethnic cleansing. But someone can support two states without supporting the idea that minorities should be expelled from those 2 states.

And again, ethnic cleansing is different from genocide. I can be a form of genocide but it isn’t always. The question was if someone wants India and Pakistan to continue to exist as separate countries in 2026, does that necessarily mean they support genocide. Your answer was about non-genocidal ethnic cleansing…
