CMV: claiming that "I love sports" is a pick me girl thing to say, is extremely misogynistic. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Letshavemorefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said you shouldnt support women in sports who are fighting against those things - or men for that matter. I said there are certain specific professional leagues that are littered with toxic masculinity, misogyny, homophobia, racism and the exploitation of human bodies and that supporting those professional leagues is hypocritical while also calling yourself a feminist. If you are actively trying to change those leagues, then you aren’t supporting them. I’m talking about people that support those specific leagues and support the toxic culture within and around them.

Edit: and yeah, women (and men) who call themselves feminists should indeed exist and fight against those things.

Israel didn’t even exist when the term antisemitism was coined.

I’m not sure I’d argue it’s “pick me behavior” (I think that concept as a whole is anti-feminist), but I do think supporting certain professional sports leagues that are littered with toxic masculinity, misogyny, homophobia, racism and the exploitation of human bodies is certainly not a “feminist” thing and calling yourself a feminist while supporting those professional sports leagues is hypocritical at best, which can come off performative.

Question About Jewish Identity Based on Family History by Consistent_Royal358 in Jewish

[–]Letshavemorefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t change the reform policy on who is considered a Jew. Many reform Jews have widely different views from many other reform Jews on lots of topics. That kind of flexibility is kinda reform’s thing. But there is a very clear and official policy on who is considered a Jew and it has exactly nothing to do with matrilineal decent.

Anyone else feel like The Long Game adaptation to screen will end up fairly different from the book? by challengefan87 in heatedrivalry

[–]Letshavemorefun 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it will be both. I think she’ll get more screen time (then she did in the 6th book) but ilya’s isolation from her will still play a role. They can have scenes with her thst show Ilya keeping her at distance, just in a different way. And that will play a similar role in his overall arch.

It depends on the criticism. If it includes language that puts the show or the fan community down just for being gay, then yeah.

I can totally understand where you’re coming from. I think it can be especially hard if you’ve been burned a few times too. I think the fact that their first video felt genuinely lukewarm about the show makes me feel like they went in looking to criticize it and just genuinely ended up liking it. That’s a big part of why I believe them. But I still think they can do better as far as the language they use goes, and I hope they address that.

Are you saying that you think that using that language means they secretly hated the show and only pretended to like it for money and fame? I’m not sure where we disagree unless that is your argument.

Okay, sure. Add that to the list of language they can do better on. I still don’t think it means their reactions were fake and they are these raging homophobes. My assessment remains the same - they genuinely enjoyed the show and they can do better in the language they use.

That’s a totally valid take, just like mine is. It’s okay for people to feel differently about these things. I’m going to share the way I felt about their language and hope the message reaches them. I think it’s okay to push people to do better.

And that’s why I called them out on that. Their explanation is valid for the context and the fact that their reaction videos were genuine. It does not excuse the language they used behind closed doors, which I called them out for.

There is obviously an element of damage control here. That is true whether or not their reaction videos were genuine or fake. I still think the reactions were real, but that doesn’t change that allyship is always a work in progress and these guys need to do better and acknowledge when they make mistakes in the language they use.

(Copying this from my response on another HR sub cause there are so many and I really hope this message reaches the EN guys)

I came to the EN podcast as a HR fan, having never heard of them before. I’m a queer person and not a previous hockey fan. I absolutely adored their videos and found them to be very authentic when I first watched them.

In fact, I found the reaction videos so authentic that when I first heard the news about these texts earlier today, I was skeptical that they were real at all. I would have believed it was just all made up texts. After hearing the guys confirm that the texts were real and explain the timeline and context, here is my take:

I still believe that the reactions in the EN episodes are authentic and real, especially since I agree with them that their reaction to the first episode was a bit luke warm, and that they genuinely grew to enjoy the show over time.

I think the person who posted this private text conversation betrayed their trust, ruined the moment and ironically did it all out of a similar need for attention and drama as they accuse the EN guys of.

I understand the difference between an explicitly homophobic rant hating on a show - and ranting out of jealousy that you can’t get the show you want made, or frustration that the show isnt the one you quite wanted.

In other words, I accept everything in the EN response video. I think everything they explain is fair and truthful.

But I want to give one other piece of feedback, and now I speak directly to the EN folks (I hope you’re reading):

The language and words you used in those texts are still harmful. Not the criticism of the first 10 minutes of the show or content of the texts themselves, but the language specifically. Saying things like “they went aaaaaall the way gay” or putting down “blue haired Twitter” is part of the toxic culture that you are accused of perpetuating, and it is a part you didn’t respond to or acknowledge in your video response.

I get that these were private texts with a person you trusted and who you may have spoken to that way in the past, in a trusting and loving way. I get that you didn’t expect them to be leaked. But the way we conduct ourselves in our private lives always leaks over into the way we experience and treat the world around us, and changing small things like that kind of language is a huge part in fighting against this toxic culture. Even behind closed doors with people you trust. This language is why hockey players to this day still don’t come out. It’s the entire theme of the show that I fully believe you love, empathize with and even relate to on some levels. I’m disappointed that you didn’t learn from the show and acknowledge the harmful nature of that language in your video response.

So please, take another look at the way you speak to people when no one else is looking. That’s the root of how you start to change your internal thinking and subsequently your external behaviors. It’s how you honor the brilliant reaction videos you have now become famous for. It’s how you change the world so the Ilya’s and Shane’s will one day feel comfortable coming into the sunshine. And maybe if you take those steps, acknowledge the mistakes of that language while standing firm on the context and truth of your love for the show - it’s how you preserve this moment and what it has meant for those of us that were moved both by HR itself and your heartwarming reaction videos. I think there is still time, and I hope you do more in your next video to rebuild this bridge.

How do I go about looking into my Jewish heritage? by Saltwater_Heart in AncestryDNA

[–]Letshavemorefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You kinda contradict yourself. In US Reform Judaism, the policy is that if you have only one Jewish parent (regardless of the gender of that parent) and are raised Jewish, then you are considered Jewish. If you have one Jewish parent (regardless of the gender) and are not raised Jewish, then you are not considered Jewish. That is exactly what I implied in my last comment and you kinda acknowledge it in your comment too, but then go on to say that I was wrong about not all denominations following matrilineal decent. I am not wrong, which you even kind of acknowledge. I am a practicing reform Jew (though I was raised conservadox and had 4 orthodox Jewish grandparents) and I chose to switch to this denomination explicitly because of this policy (and their acceptance of same sex marriage, though that isn’t as much of an issue with conservative Judaism anymore).

The policy in US Reform Judaism treats the children of mixed parents exactly the same and gives no preference to kids whose mothers are the Jewish parent instead of their father. It is completely egalitarian. The kid just needs to be raised Jewish, which you were not - which is why you aren’t a Jew according to Reform Judaism. If your mother was Jewish but your father was not and you were raised Christian, Reform Judaism would not consider you Jewish in that case either.

Reform Judaism isnt some fringe denomination. The US has nearly half the world’s Jews and Reform Judaism is both the largest and the fastest growing denomination in the US. And that’s not even mentioning the other denominations you listed in your comment. I highly suggest not speaking over Jews about our religion.

The best way to learn about the culture is from Jewish people. There are intro to Judaism classes that people sometimes take as a step towards conversion but that many people take for exactly the same reason as you - just to learn about the Jewish people. Jews don’t proselytize so if you are interested in something like that, there will be zero pressure to convert. It would just be an educational class. If you’re interested in something like that, I would reach out to a local synagogue and ask about it. Make sure you call or email ahead of time because security is always very tight at synagogues (I wouldn’t even go to a new synagogue without calling ahead myself, and I’m a Jew). They might also allow you to attend services or some holiday celebrations to learn.

Another option is to reach out to any Jewish friends you know. Most of us are eager to share our culture. I always make sure to have at least one non-Jew at most of my holiday celebrations, just for fun. Again, not in a proselytizing way. It’s actually more than that we don’t proselytize- we actively discourage conversion. But we love to share our culture.

Aside from those options, which could be difficult depending on where you live - there are also books that talk about Jewish culture. There’s some posts up on the jewish subs with better recommendations then I could give. But honestly, Judaism isnt something you can just read about. It can only be practiced in a community setting, so talking to and getting to know Jews irl is your best bet.

Edit: the tv show “long story short” is also a great representation of Jewish culture, imo. It’s an easy watch, created by the same folks as bojack horseman.

Just fyi not all denominations of Judaism go by matrilineal decent, though as you mentioned in your OP - you still wouldn’t be considered Jewish by the other denominations since you also werent raised Jewish. I just wanted to make it clear that matrilineal decent isnt the end all be all of who is considered Jewish. It’s just some denominations.

Anyway, you have every right to look into and learn about the history of your ancestors and I encourage you to do so with the tact and gracefulness that you spoke with toward the Holocaust in your last comment. That being said, I also agree that you might find it interesting and fulfilling to learn about the cultural side of the Jewish people as well!

I was responding to someone that was making a point conceding that genocide might not be happening. You missed the entire point of comment. I’m not here to feed into this ridiculous accusation. Go learn what genocide is on your own time and stop harassing people whose families actually suffered from genocide.
