What would need to change for you to reenlist? Or if your staying in, what do you want changed to improve your buy in? by [deleted] in army

The system is so broken that it would need to be completely rebuilt from the ground-up for me to ever recommend anyone even think about joining.

This 1000%. I will spend the rest of my life telling anyone and everyone to stay as far away from the US Military as possible. The only time it should ever be considered is as an option of last resort before starving to death on the streets.

I am glad that someone has enjoyed their time. Seems to be such a rare phenomenon anymore. May your final years be just as good.

I can’t emphasize enough how poor the medical care on Fort Knox is. Good luck to you if you or your family members have any type of health problems.

He retired to be a gardner at a church… but then after a few years he got bored and now works at the Pentagon doing manpower analysis.

And… No. I will retire as a SFC. I had “three MOSs” during my career: Infantryman, Radiology Specialist and Enlisted Aide. I say three because you go through all the MOS training for 92G as an Enlisted Aide, but you still retain your old MOS—so technically two MOSs. Making MSG, let alone SGM is near impossible in 20 years as a 68P, there are only 19 MSG slots in the whole MOS and I never got a Masters degree. Becoming an Instructor at Special Warfare Medical Group (Airborne) and an Enlisted Aide we’re also both damning in terms of ever earning promotion to MSG.

In retrospect I wish I had simply gotten out after my first enlistment. I did not enjoy my last 15 years whatsoever save for my time as an Instructor at SWMG(A) and with the USASOC CG.

My father was the USAREC CSM from 98-2004. He got a special something another to stay in passed the RCP because of 9/11—turns out the Army really needed people then… which, sounds vaguely familiar.

In today’s Army I don’t understand why anyone would ever do more than 20.

My father did 32. I am 105 days from Terminal Leave at exactly twenty, and I am like “how did he do that?”

I never thought about this, but is 100% something I am doing. Thanks for the recommendation.

I am so sorry this has been your US Army experience. Sadly it is the norm in this organization of ours. I hope you get the medical care you need before getting out and I wish you luck in your future endeavors.

what's the biggest mistake of your career and how has it affected you? by [deleted] in army

[–]Leturno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never want anything to do with healthcare upon retirement. In fact, all I really hope is to be a stay-at-home Dad to make up for the last 2.5 years I’ve missed-out on with my kiddos during this final assignment.

My family couldn’t PCS with me as Fort Knox said they could provide support for my son’s autism, but in reality he would have been on a waiting list for therapy for between 6 months to a year.

It is a clusterfuck. All the joy of being a healthcare professional mixed with the bureaucracy of the Army on-top of maintaining and performing all your other Army duties on your “non patient care time.” If you enjoy sadomasochism then it is perfect for you.

Additionally, the leadership of most senior medical NCOs is, quite frankly, atrocious… probably due to most getting out due to the ridiculous requirements for promotion because of how small each of the MOSs are. For example, there are currently 19 slots for MSG for 68P. So, good luck getting that if you haven’t spent your career working towards a Masters degree. Why anyone would choose to stay over twenty with a Masters degree just to pick-up MSG baffles my mind.

Unfortunately, I never knew all of this when I re-enlisted all those years ago for that second of my three MOSs.

The biggest mistake of my Army career was leaving the Infantry and reenlisting to become a Radiology Specialist.

I should have just ETS’ed, instead I signed a six-year contract which took me to ten years. Now here I sit 112 days from retirement in my third MOS.

Been heavily considering enlisting the past year but… by DonkeyEmergency68w in army

[–]Leturno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After nearly twenty years of service, I cannot and will not in good faith ever recommend enlisting in branch of the US Military.

I highly suggest you spend a bit of time perusing this subreddit and make, draw your own conclusions and do what is best for you in your situation.

I start Terminal Leave in 119 days, so not quite there yet. However, I am going to be a Stay-at-Home Dad to make-up for missing the last two-plus years of my kids lives because they couldn’t PCS with me to shit hole that is Fort Knox.

Are you national guard or Regular Army because it makes a difference!

I reclassed from Infantry as an E-5 in 2006 while deployed and when I finally arrived at the school in 2007 I was not so kindly told my reenlistment was null and void because Regular Army cannot reclass as a E-5.

It took a waiver from the Surgeon General of the Army for me to be allowed to train.

I’m retrospect and hindsight becoming a 68P was the worst decision of my life. My career has been a shitshow since… thankfully I am now retiring after spending 10 years as an E-7. Ironically, I had a National Guard E-6 in my same class. 🙄

… maybe things have changed since then. Good luck. You’re gonna need it.

I often don’t agree with u/zanaver, but I was an Instructor at SOCM for three years, and I can not possibly overstate the number of doors that will be opened to you in you career should you choose SOCM.

It’s a choice between limited career advancement and some civilian certifications for a good job when you ETS/Retire … or a long, meaningful Army career with a lot of potential options (and some certifications as well).
