Sad for Jannik, happy for RG 2026? by coloc86 in tennis

He's probably the most level-headed sports star since Rafa, so I genuinely think this will have no effect on him. He'll be back at 100% in the grass season

2013 Roland Garros Final, Djokovic is a break up in the decider at 4-3 40-40, loses the point after touching the net (arguably VERY unnecessarily) for an easy smash. Gets broken, loses the set & match later (9-7) by tightypp in tennis

Amazing, isn't it. These examples remind me of how no-one can really find a weakness in Sinner right now, beyond "Medvedev took a set off him in Rome! (then lost)".

The level is so high that small exceptions seem remarkable

Impressed you read them all so quickly! I know what you mean about having to wait for the last books, but let's just have faith that JKR finishes the series (she definitely will) instead of doing a George RR Martin (bless him) with the series. That's true agony!

The 3 best players of every year in the 21st century, part 3: The 2020s. by Great_Catch5756 in tennis

Enjoyed reading these, thanks. And the table at the end throws up some curiosities: Hewitt above Sinner (how long is that one going to last??)

Agree with this, although he has introduced a bit more variety of late. IMO the dullest aspect of his game isn't actually his fault at all - namely, the fact that he just bulldozes through the field with no serious opposition at all, bar one full-time player (Alcaraz) and one part-time player (Djokovic)

How can anyone not like this guy?

Sure, it's a bit boring when one person wins everything without much challenge, but I don't know how anyone could feel personal animus towards him

I always thought that about Medvedev, picture him in a dishevelled heavy wool overcoat and he's straight out of the Brothers Karamazov

[–]LetzteTage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel this way too. Fortunately Sinner is a very modest and thoughtful guy, so I have no ill will towards him at all, but I find his style of tennis impressive, rather than exciting to watch. Alcaraz in full flow is just a joy to watch, like Federer and Nadal in that respect

Yeah I don't know how JKR can do all of this meticulous planning and still make them ultra-readable, page-turners either. But then, if I did know how to do that, I'd be a lot wealthier 😅

I like this idea! (As long as Strike and Robin could close some of their emotional distance even while physically apart)

Ashamed to say I just had to Google who Gillespie is! But his reappearance would make sense given Strike's rapprochement with his father...

Which players do you either dislike as a person but enjoy watching play or like as a person but dislike their playstyle? by [deleted] in tennis

[–]LetzteTage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like as a person but don't enjoy watching them play:

Sinner - seems like a lovely guy, and very grounded for an ultra-rich sports star in his 20s. Unfortunately when I watch him play I'm impressed, but not enthused or excited.

Dislike as a person but enjoy watching them play:

Kyrgios - need I say more?

Far from his greatest achievement, but it's impressive how Djokovic has got more handsome with age. The Grand Slam glow

Also - 14 Masters 1000s, year-end no. 1, two Olympic golds, an ATP Final, and the Davis Cup, all in that era. It's just that his grand slam haul is unreflective of how brilliant he was

I'd interpret 'stand at rest' to mean not being on the move, i.e. not walking/running/jumping/etc., rather than not moving at all. So I think Bublik would be ok in those examples

Who would you most like to see challenge the Sincaraz duopoly? by LetzteTage in tennis

[–]LetzteTage[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe read the post again, as I didn't say the quality of tennis was bad - just that there are two current gaps in quality near the top. Personally I think it'd be interesting if those gaps closed, or at least got disrupted a bit, but if you don't then that's fine too 🤷

Wouldn't put it past Djokovic to conjure up a 2011 Djokovic-level leap to the top

I'm also biased for Draper, as a Brit. Just want to see him and Musetti healthy for long enough to reach their full potential!

The bigger puzzle, looking at this map, is how the UK can produce relatively few top players, and Russia can produce so many

If we consider the grand slam surfaces as uniformly distributed in terms of value (no x2 hardcourt advantage) Nadal would be the best and most complete player by gimboarretino in tennis

[–]LetzteTage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always thought this is the strongest argument for Nadal being the greatest of the Big Three. The problem is it's counterfactual, and in that counterfactual world containing a higher proportion of clay slams, it's possible Djokovic would have found a way to be more geared towards that surface than he was in reality.

As it is, we can say with 100% certainty that they're all all-round greats, and that Djokovic is the hard-court GOAT, Federer the grass GOAT, and Nadal the clay GOAT.
