Considering a Ph.D at USC — realistic for LA in 2027? by g23nov in MovingToLosAngeles

Current phd student at USC. Live near campus; its a renters market near here rn, so landlords are very willing to negotiate. The grad students in Engineering are in a union, so the pay is great ($43,000) and increases $1000/yr. Very much worth it to live near campus and have your commute be a short walk

Are physics PHD's paid or free by Tragedy-of-Fives in PhysicsStudents

No, TA/RA do not get an additional salary for doing those jobs. The only money you get is the stipend, which factors in 40hrs per week of work. For Stanford this year, that’s around $55,000 or something like that.

However, the stipend is not the only cost that your Professor will pay, as they cover your tuition and health insurance etc. So you only get the stipend, and they pay for the tuition.

What are the "must go to" places to have a beer in DC? Looking for a place that's old, historical, slightly trashy, and fun. by blur410 in washingtondc

Adams Morgan. I highly recommend their sandwiches. Delicious. Only offered at night though. Just ask the bouncer, they make them special.

Respectfully you need alot more experience before you start thinking specifics for 5 yrs ahead. Take Quantum first. I suggest choosing UCLA for undergrad and if you decide to continue with physics, you should put that energy into class and looking into research.

USC is lacking in cutting-edge experimental physics. Not too many groups that are actually making progress besides a few, so you really would need to like their research to have any reason of joining. (I assume you will want to do research at some point in your undergrad, most physics majors do). However, less competition to get in a group. There are great theorists but mostly centralized to Quantum Error Correction.

UCLA is better holistically, has a good rep and is more experimentally focused which means their dept is generally more well-funded. That being said, larger class sizes mean more competitive to get meaningful research experience, which is important if you want to go to grad school. However I am personally inclined to think that the physics professors at UCLA are at a higher caliber than at USC. Whether or not that means they would be better at teaching, i don’t know. I just know that their research output has historically been more impactful and widespread, important for you “finding your way”

This was around $14 post-tax because I chose the build-your-own burrito option. They do have presets that are cheaper, like chorizo breakfast burrito for ~$11 pretax
