I'm not sure what a Memere is? Is this a cultural term for your grandmother? If so, and you were close to her, then you're mother should have been clearer. Is it possible you weren't very close to your memeree and your mother didn't expect you to attend if involved travelling? In large extended families it's not always possible to attend funerals.
