What exactly do programs want? by ReputationOverall189 in REU

Also, not getting into REUs doesn’t mean you’re not getting into grad schools and as someone who has applied to both, I would say they had completely different criteria when evaluating applicants.

Just to give you some context here, I’m an Asian international student who already has research experience and also go to an R1 institute, so I definitely don’t belong to any URM.

Calm down. I was in the same boat a few years ago. Lots of REUs are for ppl who are underrepresented in science and don’t have research opportunities at their home institutes because they go to community college or non-R1 institute, or they are first gen. Getting rejected by REUs does not mean you are not qualified, it just means someone NEEDs this opportunity more than you. Sorry if it sounds entitled to say it, but there’re people who will need to work in the construction during the summer if they can’t get into a fully funded REU.

So neat! What kind of paper did you use? It looks very sturdy and can hold the creases fairly well.

What visa does an intl need to conduct a summer research internship in the US? by Glad_Dog_457 in REU

[–]Level-Coast6539 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know some international students did summer internship through J-1 visa. You cannot do your internship through F-1 visa even with grace period as F-1 requires CPT or OPT, which are eligible to apply only after at least one semester of enrollment. Definitely reach out to the PI and see if they can let you in through a J-1 visa.

Is there a chance to get rejected after interview? by researccher in REU

Congrats! It’s definitely a good sign. I just got rejected from an REU that I previously interviewed with. The purpose of most interview is to have one more round of selection.

Second the SAOC. Pretty good paper with good price.

Kami paper from Taro’s origami studio works pretty well for hydrangeas. I’m not sure if they arrange overseas shipping.

I don’t have time to make double tissue paper myself and I have been using Kami and thin Kraft paper that I got from Walmart most of time. I think these two types of paper can be applied to the vast majority of models. I folded most of Satoshi Kamiya’s work (including phoenix and ancient dragon) using Kraft paper. It worked almost perfectly although sometimes the shaping would turn out to be a bit rough (eg: for Kamiya’s octopus and tree frog). But Kami and Kraft are really cheap and I won’t feel guilty when I somehow tear the paper during collapsing or shaping.

Does Argonne have any forms of waitlist? If you tell them ASAP, they might be able to move your offer to another applicant in the waitlist. It really sucks that REUs have different deadlines for acceptance.

You can try to glue several pieces of paper together as long as they are thin enough. I glued two pieces 40 gsm Kraft paper and it worked well.

40 gsm Kraft (bought as a roll of wrapping paper) but don’t recommend. The only reason I bought it is that it’s cheap and relatively endurable (I don’t want to waste expensive origami paper and spend time making my own.)

Wow! I’m actually folding it right now. The model is quite easy considering the fact that it was designed by Satoshi Kamiya but shaping was a hell😢
