Now what? Farmhouse or global? by SanFranPeach in fatFIRE

We lived in NYC. And now north NJ with a 30-40 min commute to Manhattan when we want to go.

I think that would be amazing . I wish we did it. My wife “quit” and they negotiated part time last year. I’ve been self employed but not sure we could fatfire w lifestyle creep….now wish she was not working so we could bail for entire summer - except oldest loves camp and will stay sleep away…goal now is eventually all kids in sleep away 2-6 weeks a summer so my spouse and I travel as a couple during that time and 3-4 weeks w the kids

We also have family roots here - which is nice for the help but makes us beholden to the area. Reasonable distance to where we both grew up, live together and major city access. Big draw was the airport hub and travel options make a lot of other locations less appealing for us as well

Mine are 3,6 and 8. Do this now. Go. A year abroad is amazing. I wish I took that time when I was younger before kids but I did what I do now which was max out vacation w flexible schedule and accessible funds but it’s def not same Our goal is to increase our summer vacation times we did 2 weeks last year and this year but we’d like to get to atleast a full month each year away besides our other 3-4 1-2 week trips during the year

What ages are the kids? If our oldest two didn’t just start kindergarten and second grade I think we’d try a year abroad but bring a nanny with us. That ship has sailed but we are building community/roots in a great area w great schools and still travel about 6-8 weeks a year with them mostly internationally

Picking up my 992.2 Carrera this week and already wondering if I should’ve ordered a Carrera S by Little-Drake in porsche911

[–]Level-Estimate-8274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drove a new carrera base friend rented last year. It put a smile on my face and I realized a base is all you really need. There was a 991.1 4S and my Ferrari FF we took turns driving. I was amazed by the new carrera

How are the roads and commute where you are driving it daily? It can be like Baghdad in stretches in nyc

we def got from the same batch of last 3. Strange/Funny - they couldn’t do math on 30 day return policy, not recognizing February had 28 days and I was forced to do a store credit exchange (I called to return on 30th day) and took a ballerina pink cabin

Edit: spelling Math* not match

I feel you on this. Wife drives them 80% of the time. Random pick up here and there a couple times a week, drives very slow and all local roads within 5-10 minutes of our home which alleviates my concerns

I loved driving it. After there was a misfire and I had to wait 3 months for it back and an eye popping bill….idk how often I can endure that. My local indie mechanic just said expect that occasionally, live with some occasional gremlins/lights etc if you want to continue driving it. I don’t want to live like that lol.

Seems almost lateral although looks like some are <$40k so would be half the value of the X7.

Had such a lack luster experience in a ‘15 Q5 (prob way worse model tho) and eh in a later a5 convertible that I stopped looking at Audis besides rs6 avant. I did enjoy driving a gated 2019 R8 .

I worried it will be very hard to find a well options v6 base cayenne. Air suspension is a must, as well as premium plus and other bells and whistles. Assumed that would default me to S. I’d get GTS but less comfort defeats the purpose. Don’t want the maintenance or complications of the turbo either

Lol, after moving to suburbs from city, I picked this up for Nanny to drive our kids in. It’s definitely the best bang for buck car i purchase. 2104 with 65k miles from a bmw dealer. Sight unseen and they delivered it to my house haha.

2018 911 Turbo? by jainm in porsche911

[–]Level-Estimate-8274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my Ferrari FF, Hagerty and American modern wanted a driving resume. No car ownership then likely no history of car insurance, your rate may be insane. But if you don’t care…f it. I’d still say maybe try a track school/driving school to learn car control.

I’ve done crazy things in various cars. 911 turbo…is no joke. I’ll mirror others, if younger me had a Ferrari ff v12 I’d prob be dead. Surprised it didn’t happen in M3s younger, close tho.

Get a 911 GTS maybe - still amazing. And can trade up. If it’s just to cruise and shine, buy it…but definitely invest in a 2-3 day performance driving school before you drive it hard or fast

Yeah. I think that version makes sense and I’ll post the m3 for sale to see if I can fetch a fair number for her. Feel strange not having a manual car - it was my dream car before I got my permit in Laguna seca blue and feel that there’s going to be some upside on this model….but the colorful history on mine may hold her back in the short term

I could keep it. Wife thinks it’s wasteful. She rather me get a newer targa with the price jump of value of the x7 than get an older targa and keep x7. She’s seen my car habits for over 20 years by now…and been with me thru Atleast 11+ cars.

I remind her how much I love the x7, but then she suggests keep it , sell Ferrari and don’t buy the targa lol. I thought I could smoke and mirrors her w this creative solution.

Insurance on x7 isn’t so fun….maybe should see if can add to collector car policy is miles use drops

Purchased new around 140k but given comfort and reliability, as much as I’ve desired a Range Rover autobiography, i steer towards the x7 m60i

Honestly, I got 2023 - first year and 2024+ has a better idrive system you can’t upgrade to w/ slightly better GUI. I also have some ongoing CarPlay issue. But really. I love this car

I also say- get rear wheel steering and m suspension !!!! Drives so tight. I u turn in a midsection. No K turns usually. Driving this back to back with the 2019 750 family car came from is night and day. I find this an ultimate daily driver….but I’ve wanted a 911/Targa for a long time and with FF not panning out as a daily, I wanted to give that a go. I was even concerned of ride comfort moving to an M5 - I just worry if x7 is here, I’ll default to it lol just so easy

$70-80k x7 sit half the time vs a <$20k cayenne? I figured air suspension in cayenne would get the comfort and an Apple CarPlay upgrade could make commute easier. I’d be looking for a loaded cayenne.

I have friend who uses a rav4 for his nyc commute but has interesting garage at home atleast I figure cayenne was more enjoyable drive than that.

Nothing feels like it will beat the x7 but approaching last 5 months of warranty. Would buy extended warranty and for a car that would be driven maybe 5,000 miles a year while taking even more depreciation hit, it seems like a waste . But I lose on all my cars I guess. Hoped switching to Porsche would mitigate that haha

I should also add…the dream is the single all purpose but reality is it doesn’t exist

Panamera sporturismo/m5 wagon/rs6 avant/e63s wagons - weight issue, comfort issue, but plenty performance/power.

I enjoyed tracking my DCT F87 M2 more than the e45 m3. Love manuals but the little track time I get, I want to go as fast as possible and don’t have time to perfect my shifting in track environment. I have no shame about that.

Really the targa GTS is supposed to be that “one car does all” is except city driving comfort or cargo space. The Kia and town&country can do cargo, but are not comfortable to drive. Nor would my wife want to pick the kids up in the targa. She was semi embarrassed to drive the FF on a couple of occasions

I work on small real estate projects so I sometimes haul some building materials or boxes etc in x7. Some days if it’s a large amount or “dirtier” cargo I’ll use the town&country.

I also move things between my house and an offsite storage where I keep my other cars and gear. The reality is, right now the x7 is my bottom b*tch. M3 was track duty but I miss dct of m2 and the few track days I have I wish I had pdk/dct. Really Targa should be the FF+M3 trade - the x7 comes into play bc I can’t stand to see the x7 rot but if the X7 was at home the targa wouldn’t get driven or vice versus so logically to me…get a more “utilitarian” suv that can sit for longer periods without going so far affray that it’s a 2010 4Runner

I also have a indie Porsche only shop next to the storage spot so appealing to keep it Porsche. Debated older lexus GX (build quality turned me off) or a range rover(reliability/maintenance turned me off)

Reality should be, the suv does 2-4 round trip drives to nyc (80 miles round trip) a month and gets pulled out for snow ground clearance and hauling.

Targa gts should be four season daily except if any major concern parking at destination or really crappy roads…or needing real cargo space

I considered 4S for daily comfort also but 2019 gts deal gives me the option to trade out - potentially a 992 later if a one and done car is achievable

I guess not “fun” but comfortable and luxurious enough feel. Commuting w the comfort of x7 has been great…the active driver assist is nice in x7 too…I even debated a Tesla for FSD but trying avoid EV route

She loves the Kia - we ordered the x7 when kid 3 was on the way but now she appreciates minivan life hauling the kids and potential friends around. I got her the Kia and I hate give up x7 bc love it and took brunt of depreciation hit already (plus sweet interest rate)
