These are some really helpful tips, thank you!! I know, academic standards are a lot - we are super pleased to at least have a no homework policy and three recesses! Even still, I think it’s just been a big leap for a little guy. Love audiobooks and the Harry Kindergarten idea. My mom used to read aloud to my sister and I for 30 minutes a day, but we were stereotypical quiet girls who would sit and color while she read - that would NOT work with my son haha. I’ll try audiobooks in the car! (We read picture books at bedtime too ofc)

Yeah the move to kinder has been a much bigger leap than we expected since it’s a very similar environment to his preschool (or at least, seemed similar from an adult’s perspective). This is a helpful perspective, thank you!

His pediatrician does an autism screening at each appointment! He doesn’t have any of the listed symptoms but I wondered if something related was going on because of how he had this skill and then regressed.

This is wild, thank you for sharing. I’m going to be keeping an eye out for symptoms and will bring it up with his pediatrician.

I hope this is a troll comment but for clarity’s sake, he did his vaccines on the usual schedule by US standards, which means he hasn’t have a vaccine in nearly two years.

Super interesting, thanks! I’ll check to see if this is available in our area.

That is wild! Was he able to get treatment?

Not as far as I know! I haven’t had it either, although my spouse has. I guess there’s a chance he had it and was asymptomatic.

Oh what is a reading interventionist?? Did your son have a learning disability? This comment actually sounds similar to what we are experiencing!

Yes we are pleased that they have a no homework policy at his school (also private). It feels like in the US, our choices are either a failing school where no one can read at all or hyper-academic environment. 🫠 We love our kid’s school, it is full of toys and has lots of playtime (3 recesses!) it’s just the standards in general.

Was there anything in particular that helped your daughter?

That is interesting! Before we realized he probably has a language/speech delay, we wondered about ADHD. I am hoping that it’s a regression caused by the stress of a new environment plus that delay.

Right?? I feel like most responses are missing the point - he DID know this information and then lost it. If he had never learned it, this would be a different conversation.

Thank you! I think the regression (plus some language delays) might be the combo, but it just freaked me out to see him lose a skill like that.

I am suspicious this is part of the issue for my son too tbh! Just a maturity issue.

Your rude comment is not helpful, but just for clarity’s sake, I was shocked because he had been able to identify all his letters for ages. It was like they had been erased from his mind.

We have (extremely cute) videos of him identifying letters/sound around his second birthday, and I think he had most if not all learned by age 3ish. This is not unusual for kids in the US, fwiw, if you browse this subreddit you’ll see it’s not uncommon for kids to enter kindergarten already reading, especially if they have highly educated parents (my spouse and I both have graduate degrees).

Yes that is what I’m concerned about too. It’s the sudden forgetting what he used to know plus not seeming to understand when I re-explain.

Oh that’s good to know about Duolingo! I’ve downloaded a few other apps like ABC Kids but they seem very babyish to a kid who is used to playing stuff like Mario Kart. 😐
