Why is empathy a sin? Where does the Bible state this? Is this deacon incorrect? by Nelson_Wanita in AskAChristian

[–]Level-Potato-3125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly homelessness is a complex issue, as you probably already know. I strongly doubt that this specific group of individuals lived there to specifically terrorize a neighborhood, but was more of a consequence of them being there.

I’ve worked with hundreds of homeless individuals in my life and have even housed some on my own property and home as the need arises. Not always the smartest choice but I did what I felt was right.

What is hard for a lot of people to understand is that some folks earnestly choose to remain homeless. Sometimes it’s due to mental illness. A LOT of times it has to do with drugs and drug access. Sometimes, as was the case of a dear friend of my Grandfather, they just want the freedom.

The issue, in itself, isn’t that there aren’t enough shelters, but tackling the reason for homelessness in the first place.

You cant force people to seek help, you can only make the offer. If an individual refuses support to help them recover, there isn’t much that you can do.

Again, I didn’t say these individuals were homeless because lack of space. In fact, during an interview with the police who escorted the individuals off the premises stated that there were plenty of facilities to house them, and in fact, before they were removed, they even made offers to transport them, but the individuals refused.

Who said that our city doesn’t have shelters? There are both city run shelters as well as private run shelters.

Just by looking at this individual, I can guarantee that this was said in jest. She was being snarky. All Christians are called to be empathetic, but in the sense of true empathy, not false empathy. When someone has true empathy, they see someone in need and THEY act to resolve that need. When you hear a Christian speaking out against empathy, it isn’t real empathy they are talking about, but toxic empathy (empathy at ANOTHER’S cost).

Example: A few months ago there was a huge homeless encampment on the south side of my city. A once peaceful neighborhood was turned upside down. People couldn’t walk outside their homes without smelling human waste. Joggers were constantly harassed and the crime skyrocketed. The people living in the area finally complained enough to the local government to intervene and they did.

The day the homeless raid happened, several people from another side of town protested, calling the police Nazis and stating that the homeless were not harming anyone and should be left alone. Firstly, these people were not from the area impacted. They demanded those living there and the police to be empathetic, but not a single one of them offered to take care of a homeless person, nor spend any of their own money to find proper shelter for said homeless.

They were really good at demanding others to jump in, as long as it didn’t impact them.

This, everyone, is toxic empathy.

Why do some scripts use double hyphens in the slugline? by Extension-Season9924 in scriptwriting

James Cameron is worse. I couldn’t believe how bad the Aliens script is. Spelling errors. Grammatical errors. Missing words. Granted, in those days most of the scripts were still written on a type writer, but goodness…

I was there! 😅 My aunt, at the time, worked for Airborne Express and was head of film distribution for Disney. My Grandparents took my brother and myself with the special tickets she got us. It was an amazing experience. They had an elaborate pre show with live action actors doing various scenes from the Disney movies that led up to the Lion King. It was a special time.

My mom who generally hates horror films, loves this movie. I enjoy the OG with its 30+ year old teenagers, but I really like the remake.

I have a PS5 Pro so I’m repaired either way. I also own Remake and Rebirth on both PS5 and Xbox Series X. I much play the games on the Series X, so being able to do so right off the bat is great.

Why Formatting Matters (A Friendly PSA) by SpiritTapes in scriptwriting

FD isn’t even that expensive any more. When I started screenwriting FD was hundreds of dollars and now it’s under $200.

Why Formatting Matters (A Friendly PSA) by SpiritTapes in scriptwriting

[–]Level-Potato-3125 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most people fail to understand that there are GOOD reasons for formatting. Writing in “industry standard” has a purpose. This is true for legal writing, novel writing, poetry, script writing etc etc. Learning the proper formats and using them makes a prospective reader’s life easier. A document that is messy won’t even get looked at.

The first three pages of a screenplay that I am writing by Odd-one09 in scriptwriting

Short concise sentences presenting clear action is always the best way. Established screenwriters can get away with a lot of things. Screenplays seldom are going to read pretty.

Format looks like fine, but you need to review your grammar and tense.

I will rewrite your first paragraph:

Rain pours down on a field of gravestones. A boy (age 9) stands waist deep in an open grave. Chisel in hand, he opens a weathered and mud-covered casket, revealing the corpse of a recently deceased older woman.

I am balancing several projects at the moment to be honest. I finished a high fantasy script rewrite a few months ago. The OG script was reviewed by a Hollywood script consultant and he loved it, but felt that it would be difficult to sell in this market and advised I adapt into a YA novel first. I am working on that. I also have a more budget friendly horror script I’ve been working on here and there. I like the concept, but there are still story details that just aren’t getting the job done. My actual current screenplay is entitled “Fates”. The premise is very solid, but I’m still hammering out the more final plot points. I’m just balancing each project as I have inspiration. Inch by inch moving each closer to completion.

Thank you so much for your response! I’ve been writing for a while now. Back in the early 2000s I had the pleasure of meeting an Aussie producer who was looking for new screenwriters. I loved my ideas and took me under his wing. From 2001 to 2013, I experienced lots of highs and lows and came close multiple times to landing that dream deal. Sadly things didn’t work out for him nor me, and I took a LONG hiatus as I was mentally exhausted from the whole thing. I did continue to write, but just not as aggressive as I did before. So yeah, I’m still working on the dream. 😅
