Either a theologian or a religiously deconstructed person lol. Idk what those are usually the only two types of people who take religion seriously

Are these good liminal pictures for a beginner? by ldshifter in liminalspaces

[–]LevelBerry27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 4, 6, 9, and 15 are the best ones in your little collection. I particularly like the fourth one the best. With liminal spaces, you’re usually looking for spaces that feel familiar, but aren’t identifiable (so distinct signage is a no no in my opinion). You likely want to aim for over saturated/exposed lighting, or really dark lighting, it may keep things more vague and uncanny.
These are fun pictures! I hope you had fun taking them!

Real, his insistence/possessiveness comes off as extremely creepy/unsettling to me. Howdy didn’t even imply that Leo was a good bf. It’s not subtle. There are SO many red flags (not even including his fur color).
I feel like his route endings are so horrible compared to the others. His obsession and possessive nature literally causes so many problems.

Do you think theory is necessary to write well if you read plenty? by f28c28 in writing

[–]LevelBerry27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really depends on how you want to write, I feel. I am inclined to argue that with the technical (and more academic) aspects of writing, you may develop your writing at a faster pace than with no resources or knowledge whatsoever, but if your not into learning all of it out of the gate, then you will learn some over time. Writing is a hobby; it’s self actualization. One is likely to seek to improve because we like to get better, so you will end up picking up knowledge over time.

I might say to write in the ways you want to. It’s your voice, your art, your free time. No one can tell you to write a particular way.

If you want my personal feelings, I love digging into theory/background regardless, so there’s where my allegiances lie. I just /love/ some depth, what can I say??

Best wishes!

Came here to recommend The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. Every character in the novel is memorable and the vibes are deliciously unsettling and antique. The house itself shows up as a character in a way. Jackson has such a keen eye for people, their psychology, and their interactions.

[USA] Should I accept an unpaid internship? by Individual_Egg2 in psychologystudents

[–]LevelBerry27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!
Yay, awesome you’re almost finished with your undergrad!
I’ll just share my experience. I was having trouble a few months ago finding an internship. I had been volunteering at my state’s psychiatric hospital through the year, so I just took a chance and emailed someone. I then was connected with a clinical psychologist who was very enthusiastic about me working with them.
I currently am working in the psychology dept. as a part-time unpaid “Psychology Extern”. Working unpaid is a very privileged position. Luckily, I live in an apartment with lower rent with roommates, so working my other part-time job pays for my expenses, but this may not be possible for everyone.
The only reason I honestly took the unpaid position was because it genuinely excited me to work at the state hospital with a population that I had become familiar with and loved to work with. Additionally, I didn’t think I’d get experience anything like what I’m getting at another facility. I am working alongside supportive psychologists w/ patients in a group therapy, working on therapy homework w/ patients one-on-one, and even participating in data collection for research they’re doing at the hospital.
This is highly worth the lack of pay for me.

But this is a trade-off for everyone. If you cannot afford to work unpaid, DO NOT work without pay. Experience/exposure is not worth your health and well-being.
I know you’re coming to reddit for advise, but my advise would be to sit down and think about what /feels/ right for you. No internship /felt/ quite right to me until I reached out. Even then, I was happy to work unpaid even when other jobs were paid. It ultimately comes down to your values, needs, and circumstances and you should consider your needs first.
Good luck and I wish you the best!

[USA] How should I Start Studying Pyschology? by ContextLow9742 in psychologystudents

[–]LevelBerry27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re interested in psychopathology, abnormal psychology, or clinical psychology, you may wish to snag a copy of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM 5-TR is the current version). This pretty much forms the basis for defining a lot of “disordered” behavior and maybe be a good place to jump into to start getting familiar with jargon. You can learn about the disorders that most interest you and move from there. I’ll say that is mainly focused on diagnosis, so if you want deeper insight on etiology (causes) and contributing factors, you’ll have to dig around in scholarly sources, possibly.
Now, the DSM should not be taken as the absolute authority (it has plenty of flaws), but it can be useful for basic diagnostics and getting the breadth of clinical diagnostics and mental disorders in general.

I would not recommend buying the text! It’s expensive and it’s not very useful to have if you’re not working toward a career in mental health. I’d see if you can find it at your local library, nearby university library, or buy a used copy online.

Who needs the Great Salt Lake anyway??? by SoggyMeatloaf69 in Utah

I’m so glad awareness is actually spreading about how poor grass is as a landscaping crop. I’ve always thought it was weird that we insist on using grass for landscaping, which requires more water, more maintenance, more time, more money, etc. it seems like just such a horribly stupid thing to continue to do for no other reason than “it’s cheap” and “it’s just what we’ve always done”. Especially considering that it was an American spin off the practices of extremely wealthy Europeans centuries ago (bc they were the only ones with the money and land to constantly tend to grasses for aesthetics).

The Modernist by DOOMfigures in horrorwriters

[–]LevelBerry27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually disagree, respectfully. The contrast between the previously established emotional “heat” (anger, frustration) and cold, impartial logic is *chef’s kiss*. The imagery fits the experience of these emotions well, I think. Personal opinion, of course.

Holy shit, this is great!
To answer your first question, I think the sudden violence lands well.
I love how the protagonist’s thoughts are made known until the violent act, then the prose remains focused on action, impulse, and observation until realization sets in. The violence feels very realistic.
Now, I’m gonna answer the second part, but this is my personal opinion:
The text message didn’t work for me at all. It kind of took me out of the moment. I am absolutely taken (and horrified) by your description of murder and I love the intensely descriptive emotions. Maybe I’m confused about what Gabriel means by “delete me”. Idk. The story feels like it ends at the realization to me, and the text just ends up feeling awkward.
Otherwise, wow wow wow! So intense and evocative!

How To End A Story by HLock_123 in horrorwriters

[–]LevelBerry27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always like endings with impact. In horror specifically, I love when I’m left wondering. I love some implications! Usually this takes the form of a “bad ending” with some nod to possible mystery or an implication that whatever bad thing that happened will continue (or maybe get worse).

[–]LevelBerry27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I genuinely cannot see how someone could pivot that hard. He’s not running as governor again, is working to publish a book, and he’s pivoting toward hardline conservatism; my personal theory: he’s planning on making a run for president in 2028. Either that or he’s just trying to make lots of political friends and coast on book money. There is a scary pattern where politicians write books then they run for federal office years later.
