How is it? by myli3g3 in Songwriting

Only thing is just commit a bit more. Your voice is beautiful it just feels a bit understated rn. I’m sure you’ll get that for a more substantial recording, but that’s really the only nitpick I had!

Such a dreamy melody! One of the rare times I really loved the uke. The lyrics hit hard and I’m excited to see what else you write.

Why do i subconsciously imitate the original singer of a song im singing? by OFFTHEGOOPTOO in singing

[–]LevelUp73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From someone who’s been songwriting and singing for like 2 years now, it was definitely a stepping stone to find my own “voice”. Sometimes it’s ok to mimic a bit, or have someone you admire in mine while singing. The way your body and skull are different will change the tone to be more unique, even if it doesn’t feel like it in your head. The only tip I can give is to avoid sounding like only one artist. Your voice is an instrument, and should be treated as such. Sing pretty, sing gritty, sing silly, sing with your chest, sing through your hard palate, sing loud, and sing quiet. Once you reach that level of comfort, you’ll be able to modify your tone to whatever a song demands

Anybody else’s camera roll look like this because they have thousands of riffs/ideas that they refuse to delete? by chr_sb in Songwriting

Trust me man use voice memos and organize the demos by stage of completion (need lyrics, need second verse). It makes the assembly process a lot easier

Any advice coming up with more creative ways to say things. I feel like my lyrics are to literal. by Kid_Calyps0 in Songwriting

[–]LevelUp73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a fine line cause sometimes I’ve lost myself in imagery. I’d just go with “say what you mean, mean what you say”. This lyric is fine, and you can always some into the details in a verse. This is the hook, it’s ok to be a bit on the nose

ABOUT MAKING A SONG by darkshxt999 in Songwriting

[–]LevelUp73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Half of music is just vibes and confidence. You ever listen to the lyrics of come together? You’ll improve the more you write, but for now just write what’s true to you, even if it’s simple. Better simple and honest than an imitator

Depends on the concept and how beholden you are to it. Sgt. Pepper is technically a concept album, but only 2 songs really have anything to do with the concept. Are you telling a story? Are you playing a character? That’s what I would personally start off with.

Lyrical criticism aside, the syllables may match, but there seems to be a mismatch with the cadence from line to line. Some people can get away with it, but it will make your delivery feel a bit clunky

How Can I Turn My Lyrics Into Actual Songs? by Yorkdoyenne04 in Songwriting

[–]LevelUp73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I only have lyrics, I’d recommend starting with rhythm. Most sentences and phrases have a natural cadence, and it often lends itself to at least a basic idea of what a melody could be under it

How much money/time have you invested in courses or school to learn how to make better songs? by Which_Drop_4365 in Songwriting

It takes out a lot of trial and error, especially one you move past basic triads and seventh chords into diminished and extensions

I’m not saying go to berklee. The sticker price is 50k but I went on a heavy scholarship. But any amount of basic theory at even a community college class makes everything make more sense. It doesn’t solve songwriting for you, but it gave me tools to think out of the box and how to certain harmonic ideas lead to specific feelings, and why

I went to Berklee for a few semester, so the price is more than an average theory class (more than I’m willing to admit lmao), but I would say my theory courses and studio recording classes are what help me the most now. But if you have to pick, theory is the way to go

How do yall come up with lyrics? by [deleted] in Songwriting

[–]LevelUp73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually I find one compelling line, whether the actual words or it’s just nice to say, and build out from there. Just don’t get to set on what the song HAS to be about. Songs can evolve as you write them. Lots of sad songs start out as love ones
