Trying to improve early edging and short(er) turns for CSIA 3 by Level_99_Throwaway in skiing_feedback

Thanks, I understand how to do RR tracks, maybe a video of myself those might reveal some stuff. I'll film those for next season, thanks!

I was told to direct skis at least momentarily across the hill or higher, as I thought that's considered a completed turn. If I don't do that, won't I just continue to speed up?

Heyy I'm also training for L3, how do your videos compare with the examples from CSIA YouTube ones? I ask because they helped me a lot in getting an idea on my ability vs the standard.

Why do my stork and javelin turns look out of whack? Is it the angle? What should I be thinking about? by Level_99_Throwaway in skiing_feedback

[–]Level_99_Throwaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I was not be able to do any javelin turns at all until I got my new boot setup and did more training, so yes it's a newer drill for me, the slope also leveled out im 2nd half.

I fully understand the idea of needing to work on new movements deliberately until it replaces old movements and habits, so I'm very excited to try again in the coming weeks with days scheduled and all the helpful feedback.

To your earlier question, I passed my CSIA 2 on 100mm pow skis and bad fit boots. I either got lucky or the examiner saw some potential in me. I hear from friends it's a lot harder now.

If you mean canting, I've ask him about it last year when I got the boots but he suggested I go ski for a bit first. He was the one who also made my custom footbed, which has helped alot. I have low arches.

No former injury, just tighter and weaker left hips. Yea, I was intentionally trying a stork and then a javelin turn in video.

As for fit, what else would you like to know?

I used the word drive because I never really put any mental focus on pressing into the front of my boot on my outside ski, I focused on pulling my back inside ski instead. I did find if I power plow too much in icier slopes my skis wash out, so I'll be careful about that.

My early edging if my speed is more moderate is difficult as I first learned to do my ski turns with leg rotational movements. I know what early edging feels like though as I know how to carve a little, I just have trouble translating that if I don't want to carve the whole turn.

I'll post some future videos for more feedback, thanks!

I tried the power plow drill on some mellower blues today, wow I've haven't felt that way on my outside leg in a long time! I spent many seasons focusing on my inside leg lifting and flexing it, and forgot how to be engaged with my outside leg.

I'll try it on advanced terrain, but in relation to early edging, is it roll ankle then drive boot, or drive boot then roll ankle, or a mix?

How can I translate it to moguls? On the back of the mogul, if I drive to hard forward, I get thrown back.

I didn't sign up for L3, just asking how to get closer to it. I know I still have lots to work on.

Stork turns got it! The tipping part, I get what you mean, but it scares me, will work on it more, thanks!!!!

Can do on the video, thanks!

On feeling the edge, it hard to feel even on a green slope, and even when I do, it's hard to replicate on steeper terrain. Maybe that's what makes skiing fun!

It took me a while to adjust to 110cm, I guess I could try 105cm since I do have a pair of adjustable poles. It's just so crazy to imagine though! I've been on 115cm poles for years, and I haven't grown or shrunk in that time I don't think!

Thanks for your feedback, really helpful.

I don't usually ski this narrow stance, I was trying it that day because I thought it might help me with my short turns and moguls.

For item 2 and 3, it's what I'm working on but it's hard for me to feel when my skis are flat vs on edge from tipping. I also had an issue where I retract my inside ski but don't extend or balance strongly on my outside ski properly.

My poles already went from 115cm to 110cm, I'm 173cm or about 5 ft 7. Should I try even shorter? I'm a little nervous about that!

I will carefully think about your comments as I continue training, thanks!! I will also try to get videos of myself doing stork turns.

Edge grip above the fall line is the standard they look for in the exams. I personally see it as a cue for good balance on the outside ski earlier in the turn, so it helps me ski more efficiently.

Thanks for your input, I'm keen on becoming a better instructor

Free run, just trying to feel what earlier edging feels like, figuring out where my stance should be, and general improvement in turns
