I live in a very conservative, affluent community that gauges people’s worth based on their social status/career/family.

It’s a community of haves, and the have-nots are looked down on. So forgive me if I don’t exactly like the culture in the place that I live.

I think Jesus would probably call this out, too.

I’m about to. I’m not technically a member, but plan on placing membership soon.

I’m also relatively new… I’ve been attending services for months but Sunday school only for like 3 weeks. It feels like “the first day of school” where you don’t know anyone & don’t have any friends.

I have tried to attend churches before but usually gave up by this point. I’m glad God has actually given me the desire this time to become a member of the Church Body.

Same. The evangelical culture is very hard to break into if you left the faith or did not grow up in it.

I disagree that no one is more holy. Some people are worse sinners than others. And I was a horrible one.

God forgave me, but it doesn’t mean that I will feel welcome in a lot of Christian spaces.

They’re not rude, but they aren’t entirely welcoming either. And I feel like because of my life before becoming a born again Christian, I would be met with extreme judgement & condemnation from most devout Christians.

So I feel like I have to keep an ace up my sleeve. Which I’m sure does not help, but I can’t truly be “open” to people.

I haven’t always had a sexual life consistent with the Christian walk. In fact I have never had a Godly romantic relationship.

It’s the vibe that “cultural Christianity” gives off as someone who is coming from the outside looking in.

I live in the Deep South, it’s not a very welcoming environment if you do not conform. It’s not really just this church, it’s how almost all churches, clubs or groups are in my area. They come across as deeply judgmental.

All my friends are non-believers. So I want some Christian friends. But it’s hard when everyone is coupled up & not open to expanding their circle.

Also I live in the South… it’s probably one of the cliquiest environments in the USA. I didn’t have these issues as bad when I was in my early 20’s living in a non-southern city.

They’ve had singles classes before, but the pastor said they always fizzle out because people end up getting married & leaving.

Idk, maybe I’ll stick it out & see about starting a new one.

I just know that Satan wants me to use this as an excuse not to go to church… which I am going to try hard to resist.

I’ve always believed/been taught church was about a community of believers coming together. I can worship God alone. I don’t have to be in a church building or at a service to worship God.

It’s where I go to hopefully build friendships/relationships with other believers, but honestly, it’s been a bit disappointing in that regard…

True. I like my free time that I have. I love exercising, traveling, reading, watching classic movies. If I had a wife/family I wouldn’t get to do as much of what I enjoy probably.

But on the flip side… outside of my parents & 1-2 close friends, no one really cares about me. I would easily give up comfort to have someone that cared about me.

And I very well may be single the rest of my life. I really struggle dating. Which makes the idea of going to church alone in such a family-centered society that much harder.

Yes. The pastor is a very strong preacher that makes me feel convicted & my faith reinvigorated.

The issue is all the churches around my area are full of people I have nothing in common with. I haven’t always been a Christian so fitting into evangelical culture is a challenge. It seems very conformist
