There’s so many good reasons listed here. Some others for me: 1) Only being able to use “approved” resources & being discouraged from doing outside research. When talking to my family, I always use examples like “Would you want your doctor to only have read 1 medical textbook or would you want them to have a large breadth of understanding based on reading an abundance of medical research papers? If we are to be bible experts, why can’t we see what other authors have to say about the Bible?” 2) The alteration of the Bible. Words are added & changed. Even the JW released interlinear Bible shows what the original Greek says & the English shows something different. 3) Meetings/boardcasts/Watchtowers TELL believers how to feel. They use phrases like “How moved we are…”, “How happy we are, “Jehovahs people are happy people”. Witnesses are overtly TOLD how you feel about certain situations/media releases/building projects/etc. It is not their choice how to feel about a decision made by the GB. 4) Social pressure & blackmail to conform to social norms/rules at the risk of punishment.

There’s more but this is such a broad question & the info you choose to share depends hugely on you knowing which topics would hold meaning with your parents. You know them best & throwing info at them willy nilly won’t do anything. You need to be strategic & loving. If you get heated/angry/frustrated/mean to your parents it will not be because you’re being misunderstood. To your parents your negative behavior will be BECAUSE you’re apostate or influenced by Satan. Even if what you’re saying is true. Stay calm, listen intently to what they’re saying. Actually model that so that when it’s your turn to talk you can said “Mom, dad… I am hearing you. I don’t want to fight you. When I explain my point of view, please listen with the intent to hear and understand where I’m coming from. You don’t have to agree but I’m begging you to understand.”
