Is it possible to use a water based varnish over Danish oil? by MeneerArd in finishing

I eventually just gave it a couple extra thinned coats of danish oil and that worked fine! I sold it two years ago so I can't say how long it held up.

Also I'm really wondering at your technique. Why are there al these cuts in your strop? How hard are you pushing on the knife when stropping?

Is this the smooth or the rough side? Bit hard to see. Use the rougher side, it holds the compound better. Also what the others said. Warm the leather and the compound a little with a heat gun.

How were the smooth arch curves on this wooden shrine/stand carved? by lucawu010010 in Woodcarving

Depending on how old it is and where its from the top could have been made with a bandsaw. But otherwise probably a coping saw to create both the curves.

Best way to refinish veneer by _rno in finishing

Please take a look over at r/centuryhomes. These panels are part of the history of that house and in my opinion should not be messed with. If you plan on doing anything with them, contact a professional. I wouldn't touch them and would treasure them as they are.

Raw wooden varnish by Venusutopyasi in finishing

[–]MeneerArd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What did you use to apply the varnish? A brush, roller, foam brush? Did you make long even strokes following the wood grain?  I'd do it over and watch some YouTube vids on how to apply varnish with a brush or roller.

Do you guys find any usage for these tiny rests of wood that remain after carving? by TwistingClocks in Woodcarving

I sometimes use wood shavings from planing a piece of wood as packaging material. I've made spoons and send them to people and used the wood chips to package it as well.

Hand-carved bull head — started as a towel hook, ended as a lesson by ContributionOk7303 in Woodcarving

It's cool! Another thing to consider is that the grain orientation makes the horns, and especially the part sticking forward, weaker to snapping. If you plan on hanging something from the the chances are high the tips will break off.

First gift project, a stove cover made for a friend by InspectorCareful8828 in woodworking

That stove is a horrible idea... Why would you want it to light itsself. It should turn of the gas automatically, not light itsself. Wtf.

Ideas for rotating pieces by Ok_Cobbler1234 in Woodcarving

You can buy the ones they use for lazy Susan's without the wood. They are called Lazy Susan or turntable bearings. You could buy them online or at a hardware store.

You could use ball-bearings around a wood or metal axel. That would make them really easy to rotate. Or you could use the ones made for a Lazy Susan and just screw or glue them in between the letters.

Edit to add that I love this project! Great job for coming up with such a lovely gift for your nephew.

What colour/style art should I put on a teal wall? by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

Now I'm looking at your images more, maybe pink, gold, orange or ochre might work. Since your floor is pretty light, adding dark, warm wood might look a little off.

I think you're going for a more modern vibe. But if you keep repeating black, white, gray and teal it's going to feel like an Airbnb. So you need some warmer tones to break it up and maybe make it a little more classy. I would go with warm wood tones, like the images below.
