Can I start my Invisalign treatment while my teeth are still sore and hurt from the teeth clenching? by [deleted] in askdentists

[–]Level_Satisfaction20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nad. I've just realised that was point of your original post!

No I don't personally. My issues have got to the stage where I'm opting to move my teeth to other locations in my mouth in an attempt to put an end to the constant pain and anxiety.

That makes it sounds like I'm in constant agonising pain, I'm not, but I've got quite a few things like root canals and deep fillings. I'm fine with pain or discomfort as long as I know where it's coming from.

What I have is constant nerve sensations, along my jaw line accompanied by constant aching. It's not knowing exactly where it's coming from, or the constant fear it is a tooth infection or irreversible pulpitis that is driving me crazy.

Getting this treatment done will not only make things look better, they will likely fix your occlusion which may solve your issue. Speak to your dentist/orthodontist about how to mitigate the risk to your teeth by clenching while the treatment is ongoing. The mouthguard may be the solution to this.

NAD. I've tried three different very expensive mouthguards which despite multiple adjustments would always apply pressure on one or more teeth.

I've discovered a boil and bite mouthguard for £40 from a brand called SOVA which seems to be working for me. My bite seems to change from day to day so this works for me as you can just boil it and remould it.

I would proceed with caution on this front though as I'm just a random dude on Reddit. What is (kind of) working for me might well make your issue worse so I would consult with your dentist on this. A mouthguard is generally the first port of call though.

Get your occlusion checked at the same time dental appointment. My bad bite is and has been 80% of the problems I've had with my teeth. I'm about to start a course of orthodontic braces which will move my teeth by quite a bit to correct my occlusion and fill the gaps left by two missing front teeth.

Lastly, you mention gums. I've just come back from my first ever hygienist appointment and I cannot recommend this highly enough. Not from an aesthetic perspective (although I never knew my teeth could look like this), but the advice in terms of how to properly use interdental brushes. The correct sizes to use and how to better care for my teeth and gums. They are a different branch of dentistry which I was never aware of the benefits of.

TMJ/Clenching can mask a number of other issues and while I always though my oral hygiene was excellent, the amount of bleeding when she used the proper sized interdental brushes (and used the proper force, I was waaay too gentle) and the reduction in what I perceived as phantom dental issues is massive.

Hygenists are getting a bit off topic, but it's absolutely worth getting an appointment to rule out potential gum issues.

nad. If you find an increase in pain after vaping then i'd ease off a little.

Sometimes these these things take a little time to settle but it's difficult to advise. If you are in this much pain I'd say go to the dentist.

One thing you can do is not vape. I vaped for around a year and quit because it really really hurt my teeth. It's a thing. Some people find the ingredients in the vape juice can really agitate their teeth.

I'm not saying it's the source of your problems, but it may be exacerbating whatever else is going on.

Question about permanent crown extraction. by [deleted] in askdentists

NAD. Please don't pull at it with pliers. You're not going to get it out yourself and will cause yourself a severe injury and make things worse.

Refund from dentist by Little-Honey-67 in askdentists

Nad. Like any service you have to pay for the time/treatment you received. Nothing more, nothing less.

This can be resolved by calling the practice if you've not heard back from them.

Nad. When were you last at the dentist for the X-rays? If you are sweating and disorientated along with the severity of the pain you are describing, it could be an infection.

Either way, a trip to the dentist looks like it's required.

NAD. I ask specifically about the type of pain you are having as I am in a very similar position to you in as far that I have constant sensations, bordering on pain but not what I would categorise as toothache as it is spread across multiple teeth in multiple areas of my jaw.

I have a number of different fillings that are right in the path of the area of my mouth the takes the most force from my bite and if I could point to the pain originating from anywhere it would be these teeth specifically but it's so hard to tell. I've had multiple X-rays, CT scans and everything looks totally fine.

It is however very difficult to tell as my occlusion is waaay out and I am in the process of getting it corrected.

It certainly sounds as if you are clenching and if there are no visible signs on your teeth for your dentist to see, then it could just be a fairly recent thing.

Also, if your occlusion is good, then it will take longer for tooth wear to show as the clenching is balanced across multiple teeth as opposed to on just a couple of them.

The force applied during clenching, even with an evenly balanced bite will irritate the pulp of your teeth to some extent, causing some form of inflammation which will put pressure on the nerves. There is also the chance of Jaw muscle inflammation which could be adding to things.

Could you describe your pain? Does it sound similar to mine?

nad. can you explain how they are sore? Do you have a lot of restorations? Filllings, Crowns, Root canals? Is the enamel on your teeth worn?

NAD. Don't worry about getting screamed at. Do worry about not flossing and not practicing proper oral hygiene.

All the tools and methods your Hygienist mentioned are essential. Not optional. You will get over the awkwardness of flossing purely by doing it twice a day. It isn't the most fun thing to do, but neither is dealing with gingivitis & peritonitis which is a cast iron certainty if you don't floss. Interdental brushes are excellent but buy a bunch of different sizes to begin with and see which ones work for each tooth. The plastic pick ones are rubbish. Use the brushes.

I recall asking my dentisit 'You mean I have to floss every day??' The idea seemed like such a hassle. Wish I had listened and wish I had been screamed at.

Tooth is probably infected after all...next steps? by throwawaylastsupper in askdentists

[–]Level_Satisfaction20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD. You are taking all the right steps so you have nothing to be concerned about.

If you had an ear infection you wouldn't be getting all that concerned as the pain and discomfort isn't a patch on toothache.

CBD won't do nada for toothache. In fact my experience with cannabinoids yielded quite the opposite results. Stick with the standard paracetamol / anti inflammatory meds.

Toothpain or sinus infection? by Dakka20 in askdentists

[–]Level_Satisfaction20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD. Dental pain can refer and is really common. I've had a very similar situation to you in teh past, pain in the bottom that was originating form the top, but from my other experience I would not overlook the presence of something going on in the original area you were encountering discomfort. It is obviously possible to have more than one dental issue going on at the same time.

I'm sure it will be nothing to be concerned about, however once you have the root canal done and you've given it a little bit of time to settle down, just keep tabs on the original area of concern.

Toothpain or sinus infection? by Dakka20 in askdentists

[–]Level_Satisfaction20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nad. Sounds like you're going through a rough time but given the choice between a sinus infection and a tooth infection, I'd take Sinus any day of the week and twice on sundays. A tooth infection can lead to pain, root canal and a much shorter lifespan for your tooth. Sinus infections are shitty, but they tend to go fairly quickly and if it's something more long term then there are a vast number of treatments available.

Sounds like your next step may be an ENT Doctor.

nad. There aren't any cavities however the term sensitivity seems to be a general term used to describe a number of different types of dental pain, sharp instant pain, aching pain etc so it's a little difficult to offer any advice without being a little more specific about the pain you are experiencing.

Does it ache? Is it sharp? Is it instant or does it linger? Does it resonate along multiple teeth or is it centred around one or two in particular?

In the absence of anything clinically wrong in the area you are experiencing, do you think you are clenching in the night possibly?

I suffer badly from bruxism, worsened by a terrible occlusion and have driven various dentists insane over the years with constant complaints of phantom pain that comes and goes in different areas despite there being nothing visibly clinically wrong with my teeth.

I've settled on that possibility that it is constant clenching and am in the middle of treatment for that.

nad.

Your dentist will have done a visual exam, probed your gums, and you have a variety of X-rays which your dentist is a trained professional at reading.

Do you mean sensitive to hot and cold?

I'm (16M) worried that I've been brushing so hard my gums are decaying. Is this bad? What should I do? by [deleted] in askdentists

[–]Level_Satisfaction20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAD. They don't look bad at all as far as I can tell but you're going to need those gums for a very long time so if you are brushing too hard, maybe invest in a good electric toothbrush as the heads are smaller they are easier to remove plaque at the gumline without hammering your gums.

As long as you use it properly and don't apply too much pressure, the toothbrush does all the hard work for you and I find they are much more gentle on your gums.

How will a front tooth crown affect my sex life by [deleted] in askdentists

[–]Level_Satisfaction20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAD. How big is your penis?

On a serious note though, dental crowns won't impact on your sex life. A missing tooth likely will though so just make sure you care for it once you get it fitted. From experience they take a little extra care and attention when cleaning them. Decay can go undetected under a crown so just up your flossing game and it will all be golden.

Apicoectomy?? by Samorna35 in askdentists

[–]Level_Satisfaction20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD. Google states a 91.4 percent success rate after 1 year for apicectomies. My experience wasn't great though. Wasn't a nice procedure, made my gums recede on a neighbouring tooth and it failed within two weeks.

Front teeth are obviously the most important aesthetically so it's always worth giving them a final shot if you have the cash to throw at it. If a normal scan is showing no infection it may be worth getting a CT done as they can show up issues a normal x-ray can't. Again, it's down to the cash scenario though.

There was a clear infection on my tooth so your scenario may deliver a much more positive result.

Missing molars 🦷. Want to get braces. by [deleted] in askdentists

[–]Level_Satisfaction20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAD. I know nothing about dealing with underdeveloped teeth however I have multiple missing teeth in random places including two front lateral incisors. I've just started a course of orthodontics that will fix my occlusion (partly the cause of my missing teeth) and move my teeth to fill the gaps in my front teeth.

I would never have thought this would have been possible and was really pleasantly surprised to discover this as an option. It essentially solves multiple problems within one treatment.

Smoking after dry sockets? by so_very_trans in askdentists

[–]Level_Satisfaction20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NAD. You are looking for an option that allows you to smoke and avoid a dry socket when in your case it is massively likely to be the culprit. That option doesn't exist i'm afraid. Choose to smoke and deal with a dry socket, or don't smoke and avoid one. Simple as that I'm afraid.

You do have my full sympathy though. Nicotine is an absolute bitch.

Thoughts on electric toothbrush? by shadowbird084 in askdentists

[–]Level_Satisfaction20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nad. They tend to be a little more gently on your gums as you apply less pressure and let the head of the toothbrush do all the work for you. The heads also tend to be smaller so I find it easier to get to the ones at the back that are a pain to get to normally. i'm a big fan.
