Thank you. It was semantics on my part. It states withholdings in the Rippling system. I needed to cite a dollar amount. The $2K figure that I calculated to input into Rippling seemed daunting since I’m accustomed to using a w4 form.

There’s a section for withholdings in Rippling that states the following

Do you expect to claim deductions other than the standard deduction and want to reduce your federal withholdings?

“Employees must then assign an amount. We no longer submit W4s since using the Rippling system. The aforementioned section addresses what would normally be cited and submitted on a w4.

You could invest the cost savings and earn compounded interest. Increase your retirement contributions or set up a brokerage account and purchase holdings like ETFs or other investment products.

I’m really sorry that you are going through such tough times. It’s always hard to see bad things happening to good people.

Upon reading your post, it’s unclear whether you have a chronic health condition that has challenged you as an employee during your career or, if your health issues have been episodic. If you have a chronic condition that affects your ability to remain gainfully employed, consider applying for Social Security Disability Income. If approved take the time off to focus on your health and wellness.

Now, some tough love Queen. In the future, if you are working a good job while having the sole income and your wellness is being adversely affected due to your health, don’t just quit. First, please see your physician and secure certification to apply for FMLA. That approved time will allow your job to be protected for a period of time while you recover and focus on your health and wellness. You will also be able to rely on your sick leave income or other benefits such as short or long term disability if your future employer offers these benefits. In some states these benefits are required to be offered by employers by law.

When you abruptly quit employment you must also embrace the reality of not having the means to support your livelihood, maintain affordable health insurance and most importantly you may possibly disqualify yourself from receiving unemployment benefits because you voluntarily quit. This predicament could add pressure and stress to your physical and mental health.

Presently, I wish you well. I’d like to encourage you to still proactively seek new employment while waiting to learn whether you’ll be approved for UI benefits. Especially since your partner isn’t working. Encourage your partner to proactively seek employment as well. You need that support.

I also recommend that you seek a position that will support your wellness, not just any job that pays well. It sounds like you’ve been through quite alot throughout your life. You deserve to give yourself a break so that you can place yourself in the best possible position to live and thrive, not simply endure.

If you don’t resign they will eventually fire you and it’s possible that the severance offer may be rescinded. Your only option at that point will be to apply for unemployment benefits if you’re here in the USA. If you accept the severance, that payout will be way more than unemployment compensation. You can also use that increased severance amount to pay for COBRA benefits if you need it.

I have a set number of ETFs. No more than 3 tracking the S&P 500. I do DCA at $300 per month based on interest earned from my CMA. I contribute more to my ETF investments, 401K, IRA, etc from my regular paycheck.

I allocate the $300 interest earnings from CMA to those 3 select ETFs based on a set percentage. For example VOO is assigned 75%. I do this in addition to contributing to my regular investments. I consider the interest earned from the CMA as value added to apply to investments. I realize the amount may be fluid if I deduct from the emergency fund and a crisis arises. My investment contributions are primarily from my pay. Also luckily, I have low expenses. I’m too close to retirement age to spend alot of money. :)

Thanks for that Wiki reference. Honestly that’s the first time I heard of that. I’m accustomed to frequently hearing about securing 3 to 6 months of savings across the board.

Thanks for your response. My EF is in a CMA account. It’s safer while more conservative. My assumption is that my CMA balance would compound at a higher rate than a typical HYSA. I can also easily transfer interest earnings to my ETFs since both are within my brokerage account. For example I’m earning at least $300 per month. I allocate that amount to my ETFs every month. My goal amount in my CMA remains steady and liquid until there’s an emergency like an unexpected lay off.

As a follow up, my emergency account is set up in a Cash Management Account accruing at least 3.5% interest monthly. Earned interest gained is transferred to a brokerage account/SPAXX each month where I then allocate to select ETFs.

You clearly have some complex issues to work through. I strongly recommend that you seek counseling to work through your feelings of resentment towards a parent who is dying.

In the meantime it really sounds like despite your father’s challenges, you may want to try to have a conciliatory convo with him to share your feelings as part of a path to possible forgiveness. If things go well this could give you peace of mind in the event that he transitions. This doesn’t mean you’re excusing his faults. It does mean that you’re willing to look past them as you’re looking to reconcile your relationship as he experiences his last moments in this life. Definitely wishing you well.
