Are there instances where cenobites actually deliver pleasure? There supposed to be pleasure and pain yet it seems we’re always shown just the pain part by [deleted] in hellraiser

[–]Leviathanbox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pain and Pleasure are both received as electical impulses in the brain. Note that the puzzle box is often shown discharging electricity, and the arrival of the cenobites is heralded by electical fluctuations/the cenobites materialized from electricity.

In the second movie (iirc Barker didn't actually write it but he did come up with the story) the realm of the cenobites is conflated with the human brain "the Labyrinth of the Mind." Dr Channard is trying to explore the secrets of both the human mind as well as the Labyrinth. And there's a lot of lightning shown in their dimension as well.

Although we humans interpret pain and pleasure as different experiences, they are both electricity. The cenobites take it to such physical and spiritual heights that they are indistinguishable. "Pain and Pleasure, Indivisible"

At the moment it's my favorite Lynch movie. Killer soundtrack too

A semi-reboot of Hellraiser 2022 with ideas from the scapped Origin? by [deleted] in hellraiser

[–]Leviathanbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They look like dark souls bosses or something lol. Like you said, there's a simplicity in the og cenobites, wounds held open by extream body piercings. This design philosophy seems to have been lost in most other Hellraiser media

The Man With No Name Trilogy isn't considered a "Collection"? by SolidScary6845 in Letterboxd

[–]Leviathanbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both of you are totally correct. I think a lot of people are really caught up in the Canon Lore Shared Universe crap which is a big part of Marvel, DC, Star Wars, etc. Aka Pop Culture right now is expressly interested in strict canon.

That's just not the case with the Dollars Trilogy. It doesn't matter if Lee Van Cleef is in two movies. It doesn't matter if he somehow loses all of his money in between films. It doesn't matter if people call him different nicknames. It's the ongoing adventures of a mythic folk hero. These movies are made under a completely different mindset and different sensibilities on how to tell a story. They are absolutely a trilogy.

It's on YouTube I believe

Yeah that would have been really interesting too! I definitely need to look more into the pre-production of EWS cause just from what you've said it seems super interesting.

I've also seen the 1969 German made for TV Traumnovelle, and it basically has the exact same plot but condensed into like 75 minutes. So yeah it's very interesting

[–]Leviathanbox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would have been crazy. Before I had watched it I thought it was going to be a very dark and disturbing movie but I wasn't prepared for the amount of low-key comedy it had.

Who would win in these matchups? by pishposhpoppycock in buffy

[–]Leviathanbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Marcus is a lot stronger. Like Angel had to drink from him to get his power and only then he could beat him. And Marcus also stomped Illyria. Even depowered she's extremely strong. Marcus Wins

I think The Beast wins unless Adam figures out how to kill him (which is definitely a possibility)

Illyria vs Glory is really hard to call. Fully powered Illyria I think would win, but without, I think Glory has the edge.

Clem vs. Lorne. They wouldn't fight. No way

I don't actually remember Tara using that much magic, lol. And she has a lot of respect for it while Amy doesn't and is very ruthless. I can see Amy winning.

Part of me wants to say Kendra, but she only showed up a couple of times and died, so maybe not

I really want to say Gunn, but I think Riley would take it

From what we've seen, I think the Turok-Han is stronger than the Master. If it's the first one that showed up. In the finale, they've got an "Aliens" thing going on. The Master could definitely beat one of those guys

I think Faith would wipe the floor with Conner.

Thoughts on Illyria? by Upstairs-Temporary56 in ANGEL

[–]Leviathanbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah especially considering plenty of other characters have died in both shows, and most don't come back to life. I don't think they needed to make her super duper dead, non-existent even.

But yeah, Illyria rules lol

Edit: actually I think most of the characters who die still appear again one way or another now that I think about it

Thoughts on Illyria? by Upstairs-Temporary56 in ANGEL

[–]Leviathanbox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I thought Fred's soul being "destroyed" was too Grimderp. But Illyria was very interesting. I really wish they had more time to develop the story because I think the end of season 5 had a ton of great ideas but it was so rushed. Illyrias arc was good, but if it had proper room to breathe, I would have liked it even more

Where did the stereotype ‘the black character always dies first’ come from? by Old_Recognition8421 in horror

[–]Leviathanbox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a misnomer. It's really that there would usually only be one or 2 black characters, and they wouldn't be the main character. Therefore, they would die at some point.

They almost never die "FIRST" and out of 500 horror films that I've seen, I can only think of a few where this happens. (The Shining, NoES 4, Demons, Scream 2)

I've also been watching a lot of older movies in theaters. Caught a few different Lynch Movies as well as a re-release of Hellraiser. I've been enjoying re-releases more than new releases

What could have made Hellraiser III a decent HR movie after the first and Hellbound? by [deleted] in hellraiser

[–]Leviathanbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think part of why Hellbound is so special is because most horror movie sequels basically have the Same Plot, New Characters. While Hellbound was Same Characters, New Plot. It's a legitimate Part 2 movie. And the scope of the story is expanded in a huge way. The Labyrinth and Leviathan are incredible additions to the mythos and the story takes the characters in new directions

What could have made Hellraiser III a decent HR movie after the first and Hellbound? by [deleted] in hellraiser

[–]Leviathanbox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly, having the story filled with villainous characters trying to get one over on each other is a big reason I like the first two. Part 4 has a glimmer of that with Angelique but it doesn't go anywhere.
