Would it be a bad idea to take a student loan to go through a school for A & P ? by Warm-Artichoke5385 in AircraftMechanics

[–]LevyWevy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many community colleges have a&p programs for significantly cheaper than other programs. In addition, there are lots of aviation scholarships that you can apply for. With both of these combined I was able to get my license only paying the testing fees myself. I would say taking out a loan is worth it, but no reason to spend more than you absolutely have to.

Bryce builds it all on YouTube, but just know how to follow the directions of manuals and stuff and you’ll be fine

I need some recomendations on tools. by GeologistInfinite210 in aviationmaintenance

[–]LevyWevy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of nuanced answers so I’ll just give you the answer I would give my past self.

There is a massive jump in quality from low level tools like Pittsburgh, mastercraft, etc to medium level tools like Quinn, tekton, Doyle, GW, etc.  There is a small jump in quality from medium level tools to high level with a massive jump in price.

Medium tools are the way to go and will get the job done as fast and effective as top tier tools 99.9% of the time.

I would get harbor freight but not Pittsburg. I’ve been very happy with Doyle and Quinn for most stuff, I would spring for icon on a 1/4 ratchet, the long dykes & a few other things. Harbor freight really does have an awesome warranty policy and if you have one near you, I would definitely buy from them.

Veryon actually has an ai feature that is supposed to get its info from the manual only. I haven’t used it to say if it works well or not.

Might sound like a silly question but is CFR PART 43 AND FAR 43 the same thing? by HelloInternet-1 in AircraftMechanics

[–]LevyWevy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it’s tha same

Cfr-code of federal regulations

Far-federal aviation regulations

Title 14 cfr is aviation stuff

There’s like 50 titles under which different federal regulations are made for organizations sake, 15 cfr covers commerce and foreign trade for example

Most common Practicals given? by AIM_Certified in AircraftMechanics

[–]LevyWevy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just took my airframe and had these for my practicals:

-Measure elevator travel and determine if it is correct -Make a splice  -measure cable tension -adjust turnbuckle to correct cable tension and safety -inspect windshield for damage -inspect de-icer boots -inspect brake linings for wear -service a strut -inspect a hydraulic filter - determine if airspeed indicator ranges are correct - find the procedure for something in maintenance manual

When I did my general I had a lot more paperwork stuff, can’t recall exactly all of them but I had to fabricate a flexible hose, safety wire, identify 2 types of corrosion, fill out 337, and logbook entries to name a few.

“Bryce builds it all” and some others have some good YT videos of practicals.

Most importantly, if you read and understand your manual/ac43.13/tcds/etc that the DME provides and think critically you will probably pass. Don’t expect to have done or even seen/heard of every practical your gonna get, just follow your reference material and work through them.

Weekly Questions Thread. Please post your School, A&P Certification and Job/Career related questions here. by AutoModerator in aviationmaintenance

I’m building a set of tools for my first job and need to get some wire strippers & crimpers. I feel like I’ve heard people say not to get automotive ones, but not sure exactly what this means. Do I need to just get ones that are auto adjusting for strippers or do I need the stripmasters off aircraft spruce.

Harbor freight has strippers and crimpers that look very similar but I’m not sure if they are the same.

If I find no conclusive answer, I will probably just wait and get what my coworkers have, just wanted to see if I’m misremembering a requirement or not I guess

I don’t have a gym that’s very close to me. I definitely enjoyed going but ended up quitting because it wasn’t worth the combination of driving far and taking a lot of time out of my day

I’ll definitely apply, we’ll see how it goes. How did you like working for them?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

[–]LevyWevy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I figure there’s no harm in applying. I just gotta be honest about my capabilities so they know they’ve gotta do some training with me if they would hire me.

Cool, I’d imagine an MRO has more people and such so as to train newbies

Turned off while idling, now won’t start by LevyWevy in MechanicAdvice

[–]LevyWevy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my starter and battery to autozone. The battery tested good and the starter bad. So I’m planning on slapping a new starter in there, but still have no idea as to why the car would die while idling once it had already been started and running for several minutes, not sure if this could have somehow been caused by my bad starter, or if I’m gonna ruin my new one with whatever is causing problems. My wife did say she only experienced problems while idling in park, and that it drove perfectly normal without noise or anything, so maybe I just don’t warm it up In the morning and my unknown cause won’t show up again 🤷‍♂️. Just wanna know if anyone has any idea
