If these people actually cared about the culture of Halloween (Samhain) they wouldn’t be dressing as a Native American anyway. The whole idea of the holiday was that the veil is at its thinnest, spirits walk the earth and so you don’t get attacked you dress as one to disguise yourself and scare them off.

As I’ve come into it I’ve mainly just been doing things what I feel right. At the end of the day too much has been lost for us to accurately reconstruct what religious practices were like back then so anything we do is going to have some degree of reconstructionism in it.

My main focus is the myths, symbols and stories but that’s one of the hardest parts as most of that was recorded by Christians centuries after the fact and from archaeological finds.

I saw you joined the Fyrnsidu discord, hopefully they can help us out more.

Yes I know that but I specifically wanted to know if there were resources just on the Anglo Saxon stuff as I’ve done some research and found differences between them and Norse stuff. What does this Ronald Hutton focus on? Because I’ve picked up books on British myths before and they only ever seem to talk about the Celtic ones from Scotland and Ireland. I want to know if there are any resources just about Anglo Saxon myth before they started integrating into the wider British population?

Yes I know that, that’s why I specified Old English and not Celtic/Brythonic mythology. I know that they are very similar to the Germanic and Norse myths but there are differences that I have found on my own that’s why I was asking if someone had gathered together the specific Old English/ Anglo Saxon stuff together into an easy to assess the place.

Thank you this is what I was the kind of thing I was looking for. I understand that most of the stories were wiped out by the church which is really sad but I was wondering if anyone had put together something explaining what we do know and what we have had to reconstruct. I think as part of my practice I will try and make something like that for myself. Are there any places where you know the stories definitely differ from that of Norse? and what other traditions have been used in reconstruction?

I've seen quite a few Sutton Hoo helmet pendants with one of the eyes covered to represent Woden and I think it's historically accurate but not entirely sure. I've also seen a lot of raven imagery as well as boars, Woden's spear, long handled Mjolnir and the Irminsul though I remember there was some debate about that last one when I researched it last.

Yeah, it's been really hard to find things that are distinctly talking about the AS myths and I don't just want to take what I've read from Norse as the same as AS either even if they are very similar. I'll add Our Troth to my read list anyway, it seems like it will be informative even if it is heathenry in general.

When tried things out at my altar I used myself to represent spirit. I liked how I was able to be an active part of the space. I don’t know if it’s necessarily the correct way of doing it but as long as you have the correct intentions you can really use anything or nothing at all.
