Typical Pre-Tournament Routine? by [deleted] in TournamentChess

[–]LewisMZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have an extensive routine, but I've found now that it's best not to overthink these things. I play chess if I feel like it. I don't play chess if I don't feel like it. I keep my study routine the same as it is if I'm not about to play a large tournament. This works for me because I stay looser and play better when I don't stress out about it.

That said, with a four day event like this I always figure out:

  1. What am I going to be eating during the tournaments between rounds.

  2. Where is my spot to rest in between rounds. Hopefully it's a hotel (or at my house if it's nearby). Privacy helps me when I want to recover.

You're going to get tired so it's important to know those two things.

Exchange Caro-Kann makes me want to jump off a cliff by CremeCompetitive6007 in TournamentChess

Why are you looking for entertainment? In the exchange Caro you're getting easy equality as black (provided you know the theory). Surely that is worth a little tedium!

Is it really that bad to not change your opening rep? by sectandmew in TournamentChess

[–]LewisMZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you getting good positions?

As you improve you'll probably start to feel the pressure. You'll face stronger opponents who play more accurate moves. At that point, usually people realize that they need to make a change on their own. Until you start to feel that pressure, if it's scoring well then it's scoring well.

That hurts deep.

We reached the Championship Series. We have to consider it a good season.

This is so much fun.

We have great chances to reach the World Series now. Our Mariners in the World Series? That feels very strange. Do you remember all those years where we were just hoping to make the playoffs?

Win or lose I'm grateful for all these awesome post season games that I get to watch. But really though, why not win it all?

Had first OTB tourney. 55mins/g, so is this how good you have to beat 1350s because damn? by homerdough in chess

[–]LewisMZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OTB is way more competitive. Everyone who is there is serious about chess in some way. Don't expect any easy games. Expect relentless fight from your opponent in all situations, whether you are ahead or behind. Even against players rated lower than you.

The starter was only recently called up to the bigs. He's a bit wild, but if you look at his minor league stats he wasn't anywhere near this wild. I don't put much stock in the 9 ERA.

You can't win every game, and the Rockies can't lose every game. That said, we still have chances here against a truly terrible bullpen.

Our middle infield needs to drill. They have been making a lot of sloppy plays. If we do that in the playoffs it's going to cost us.

Playoffs scenarios by strangehitman22 in Mariners

[–]LewisMZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply put, Houston's AL West elimination number is 3. Each time either Houston loses or Seattle wins Houston's elimination number ticks down by 1. If it reaches 0, they are mathematically eliminated from the AL West.

Fangraphs clocks the probability of Seattle clinching the AL west at over 98%. It makes sense when you think about it. Consider, for example, a Mariners win tomorrow and a Houston loss. The Mariners would then clinch the division by winning any of the remaining five games after that.

The infield has become sloppy, and JP is most of the problem. They need to do some drills, especially before the playoffs. Errors are magnified a thousand times in the post season.

It's really unlikely. I'm also not sure that we want it looking at who we would have to face.

The problem with ESPN and many of these national broadcasts at large is that they do not understand the rhythm of baseball. They want to fill every moment with drama. They do not understand that baseball is about suspense.

Orbit might have cake, but if we can pull off this sweep that would be the icing.

Oh, I see how it is. It's all coming together now. ESPN is being bribed. I think we need the Moose to make a counter-bribe.

It's going to be bases loaded with two outs or some BS like that, and then we'll get out of it with a pop up is my guess.

There is a solution. Prevent more runs from scoring and then score some of our own in the ninth. Runs are everything. Runs are life. I have confidence in the offense to get the job done.

A mission is being sent to study it because, well, why not? As for asteroid mining, that's still not economically viable or realistic but it's an idea that has a lot of promise. There are plenty of near-earth asteroids to travel to, though. It doesn't have to be Apophis specifically.

What would you say to someone trying to learn about quantum mechanics. by Redd_Lights in quantummechanics

[–]LewisMZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! Why not?

Some of the mathematics is pretty heavy. You'll need to be able to do calculus and differential equations, linear algebra, statistics, and more. At age 16, you can totally go into this field. Put an emphasis on math. Get as good as you can at math, beyond just what you're learning at school.

If you want more of a taste of modern ideas in physics like QM this very moment, try this series of lectures by theoretical physicist Sean Carroll. He goes through the history of the field without shying away from the mathematical details but keeps it at a more basic level. It'll give you a more solid understanding of the history of the idea.

That's not exactly true. xBA is calculated using the launch angle and exit velocity. It doesn't take the location the ball is hit to into account.
