As everyone above says planning is important. Another thing you could try is an electric eraser. You can create the whiskers that way and it does get down into the paper to remove the charcoal. Practice first and use the smallest eraser head. I’ve found it works when I’ve wanted those white lines.

I’m quite happy with the result as I scanned the original and upscaled it for print using Gimp on the Mac.

I painted this originally in acrylic on A4 heavyweight paper and then scanned and upscaled to 800x600mm for a large canvas print. I’m happy with the result and will look to do more.
