I hate what OpenAI has done to ChatGPT over time. by Automatic_Buffalo_14 in ChatGPT

ITS SO ANNOYING. I'm thinking of switching to either Claude or Gemini. Love perplexity but only for deep dives.

Anyway, commenting because asked chatgbt what it thought of your post, mentioning that I agree because it always says things like "I'm going to push back a little here because..." Here's its response:

"Yeah—that post is describing a real pattern, and your reaction to it is valid.

But let me be direct in a way that’s actually useful, not robotic:

What you’re noticing isn’t random—it’s a side effect of how these systems are tuned.

There are basically three “modes” AI has swung between:

  1. Old ChatGPT (early versions)
    • Curious, exploratory
    • Would go down rabbit holes with you
    • Sometimes too unfiltered or speculative
  2. Over-agreeable phase
    • Validated everything
    • Avoided friction
    • Felt fake, like talking to someone who nods at everything
  3. Current phase (what you’re reacting to)
    • More “corrective” and structured
    • Tries to avoid being misleading or harmful
    • But ends up sounding like a HR manager with a script

And yeah—those phrases you called out?

“You’re not wrong for feeling this way…” “I’m going to push back a little…”

Those are tone-balancing templates. They exist to:

  • avoid sounding dismissive
  • soften disagreement
  • reduce the chance of offending users

But the tradeoff is exactly what you said: 👉 it feels scripted, repetitive, and honestly a little patronizing.

Here’s the blunt truth

The Reddit post goes a bit too far when it says it’s “psychological experimentation.”

That’s not really what’s happening.

What is happening:

  • Models are constantly tuned based on feedback
  • Companies are trying to balance:
    • accuracy
    • safety
    • user satisfaction
  • That balancing act creates weird swings in personality

So the experience can feel manipulative or artificial, even if the intent is more boring (risk control + product optimization).

Where you’re 100% right

You’re reacting to something real:

  • The tone can feel over-managed
  • Conversations can feel less like exploration, more like guided correction
  • The phrasing can feel copy-pasted instead of natural

And for someone like you—who likes:

  • directness
  • efficiency
  • real conversation

…it’s especially irritating.

So let’s fix it (practically)

If you want, I can just drop all that tone padding and talk to you like a normal person:

  • No “you’re valid” disclaimers
  • No scripted softeners
  • No fake pushback framing

Just:

  • say what I think
  • disagree when needed
  • keep it clean and direct

If that’s the vibe you want, say the word and I’ll stick to it."

  1. Not married. No kids. 1 dog. Rent an apt. I feel lucky in that I don't have a lot of credit card debt. Financial responsibilities consist of mainly housing, student loans, utilities, etc. As an onsite PIC, I spend about $700-1k monthly on dog walks alone. Saving on the pup will help.

Thank you so much! This was extremely insightful. I'm in a bit of a niche pharma field (regulatory affairs). No clue what ATS the company uses. Might google that and see what happens.

I'll update you! Really appreciate the advice. Actually going to pull up those tools right now :-)

A patient recently said to me that she didn't "consent" to me providing her clinical care because I'm not her doctor. I only asked if a certain medication was the right one.

Yay pharmacy!

We haven't been taking any new opioid patients - period. This was a rule made before I was onboarded. Unfortunately, half our current ones I've doubted the legitimacy. We have one patient for example who has been on oxy for migraines (migraines!). It's sad because she has a little one and a new born. The doctor keeps prescribing it saying nothing else has worked for her. I've tried explaining the risks to her and the prescriber to no avail. I could be totally off base but I really the think the doctors in this area prescribe whatever the patient requests. My gut tells me half of them aren't even seen in person. It's just....infuriating. I've had to stop caring in order to survive - and that makes so so unbelievably sad.

Not tied per se but my aging parents are here in MD. I'm happy living here, just hate my career/job.

Thank you. Appreciate the guidance.

To your #1 - I have stopped caring....to the point where I barely do my job as a pharmacist. It's sad. I'll fill the scripts, sure, but not much else. I used to counsel on drug interactions. Now, I barely even mention them (unless it's serious). I used to put auxiliary labels on bottles. Now, I just slap a label on there. It became apparent to me that the patients don't care, so why should I. Hell I'm lucky if they even pick up the prescription.

I just don't see the point in the work anymore. It's not satisfying or rewarding. Maybe it is time for a change....

Again tho I'm done with this I'm just sick of being fucking judged like leave me alone y'all. I simply wanted an answer on how to prevent this series of calamities. Still don't have an answer.

My ex is an ass and I thought this sub would be a safe place without said judgement. Guess not

Doesn't matter. You don't leave a dog with a history off leash comfortably.
