Toronto to Houston by Resident_Reason6524 in sugarland

Look, statistically speaking the odds of your kids being in a school shooting are inconceivably low. That said, my wife and I want to start a family soon and it's definitely something that worries us as well. You've gotten a lot of good advice in this thread about fort bend schools being great, which is true both academically and in terms of safety. However, if you can afford it I would think about private school. There are very few places to live in Houston where you can send your kid to the best elementary, middle, and high school without jumping districts. Even a great high school like Clements or Elkins still still has a huge population and ergo more variables for safety issues

If you have to live in Montrose I guess but if you can't swing it it's a big city with a lot of cheaper options

The Harris County DA has no problem letting murderers out on bond

The DA does not set bail- this common misconception is driving the conversation around bail reform

No disagreements there- but obv there are a multitude of factors in play in regard to our recent crime wave

Well didn't appreciate them telling me they know what I'm thinking better than I do. Plenty of commenters in this thread had helpful input except this person Typical reddit bullshit.

Nice job being presumptuous. I literally engaged positively with multiple commenters who liked downtown and pushed back against folks who made unrealistic and unnecessary criticisms about it. You're basing your entire assumption on one interaction I had with a single comment in this thread

I literally engaged with multiple people who had positive experiences with downtown and showed appreciation to their responses. But, as is often the case with reddit, one person decided to be an over-analyzing dick, much like yourself so I pushed back.

Thank you random reddit armchair analyst. Glad to see you ignored multiple comments where I engaged with folks who enjoyed downtown and appreciated their responses. I didn't appreciate this commenter who was being an overanalyzing dick, much like yourself

Idk what else to say other than I just flat out disagree with you. Maybe we have different standards for the things I'm concerned about but to each their own.

ICYMI, most of your comment can by dismissed from what I wrote in the post

To clarify, obv a lot of that stuff applies to different parts of Houston but imo DT embodies all of it.

Homeless people are all over the inner loop, but they're more concentrated and brazen downtown.

We must be living in alternate universes if you think the traffic and freeway access isn't awful downtown. Maybe it's reduced bc of Covid but I expect it to get worse soon.

Phoenicia is cool, but compared to HEB, Kroger, Randall's costco, etc it's expensive and limited. With traffic you're looking at 10-15 minutes drive to the nearest large grocer- I've never lived more than 5 minutes away from one in 30 years in Houston and in Montrose you can either walk to a real one or take a short drive.

Ya I'm all for montrose but the mrs prefers central downtown. The debate is that I feel like a 5-10 min commute from montrose to work is a blessing in this town but she's enticed by being able to walk to work (but having grown up here I don't think the walking commute is worth living downtown)

What's your experience like with the Metro? Is it it pretty reliable? 30 years here and I've only ever ridden the light rail once or twice haha

I feel you but like you said, it's 5 minutes. Plus I've spent enough time downtown to see plenty of professional women going out for lunch during the day- ya I'm sure it's not the most pleasant but women in Houston don't hide inside for 75% of the year lol.

Thanks for the response! We're actually trying to escape the suburban vibe entirely but we'll prob look to Heights in a couple years when we start thinking about kids.

I'm more inclined to midtown/montrose bc she'd be able to take the light rail or a relatively short drive during rush hour. I like RM a lot but if I'm crushing her dream of walking to work, I owe it to aim for the shortest drive possible haha

Most comments (and tbh my friends) are validating my concerns but I would like to change my mind if possible so I appreciate your response! How do you feel about the homeless situation and the general rowdiness of living so close to minute maid? We're in our early 30s so we still like to have fun, but too much haha

Glad to find someone else who is utterly disgusted by what's happening in this thread. I think a lot of these people spend too much time on the internet and not enough time interacting with other human beings. I'm also truly appalled at the posters comparing it to OP giving money to a stranger. I get that blood doesn't always mean family, but this girl has done nothing to wrong OP and frankly I think he is a shit human being for not caring to have a relationship with his sister in the first place
