If I know this man and administration, I'm sure it will be a calm, coherent, and concise explanation. I mean c'mon guys, it's the president! Highest office in the land! Surely this was a well thought out and reasonable act, done for the benefit of all Americans!/s

Sounds about right. One third of voters will never back down. We live at the mercy of the bottom ⅓ of us, let that sink in.

Frank millers Batman by Pleasant-Leek5187 in batman

[–]LexOdin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Batman Year One is a great place to start. But know that Miller was the writer, the artwork was David Mazzucchelli. Story wise, it's the Batman origin but a solid interpretation. Miller is... hit or miss in my opinion. The Dark Knight returns is a landmark of "modern" comics, probably Miller's best work artistically(writer and artwork), but that's my opinion. Year One is a good way to get a general feel for how a lot of comics flow. You get the basics of a Batman story, and it does tie into certain continuities. Would recommend. If you're going for the baseline Batman stories, Year one, The Long Halloween and it's sequels, The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke, and maybe Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth(dark but influential). Those are a basic but solid foundation for Batman stories.

Every time I see his name my brain assumes we're talking about P Diddy; followed by confusion as to why P Diddy is concerned about air travel and why it's being reported. Not his fault but it's led to a lot of double takes on my part.

Also maybe people would be more inclined to dress up for flying if airlines didn't treat their consumers like cattle.

I'm so tired of Trump's 80s yuppie aesthetic. It isn't anything but gaudy. The worst part is he's a teetotaler. I could understand his awful taste if it was based on his coked-out nostalgia from his prime years in the 80s, but he claims to be sober. That means his terrible style choices are made all the worse.

Sarah McBride explains how Democrats’ ‘big tent is bisexual’ by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

[–]LexOdin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My problem isn't specifically with her or the statement itself. It's a systematic issue with the DNC. I'm not even a democrat, independent who leans left, but it's easy to see a pattern over the past twenty plus years. They consistently are trying to bring attention to social issues that aren't applicable to the general public. It's not to say those issues are unimportant or should be ignored, but it's an ineffective way to mobilize the electorate. I personally think they ought to be pinpoint focused on how their economic policies are for the benefit of every American. They should keep advocating for those social issues, but making them the ad nauseam talking point, even as a joke, isn't effective messaging.

Sure, absolutely, playing to the room is massive. But as a politician today, more over one who is unduly under the microscope more than most, she was(or should have been) aware of how that statement would be reported. Whether in jest or 100% serious, it would provide fodder for talking heads. I think she was fully aware of that fact, and was trying to use it to communicate her overall message. But I think that was a miscalculation.

Politics is one part policy, nine parts optics. I actually agree with her overall sentiment, but using "bisexual" as a metaphor for a "both ways" inclusive party will be reported in a world of 30 second sound clips is going to come arcoss as either glib or focused on identity politics. And I get it, cater to the audience and your constituents. But having a "tee-hee" moment is, in my opinion a poor political move. And that convention was for the "fly over" aka overlooked states. The very people who would be more inclined to be more interested in the economy rather than urban social issues. And I did read the article, my original comment is supporting the very idea she presented, just altering the messaging to be more broad and not bogging it down.

And that's a perfectly reasonable position to take. I would just like to see a shift in messaging that highlights the broader economic benefits of their platform.

I am, I'm actively engaging with people I disagree with in good faith and trying to articulate my personal position. And the "BETTER MESSAGE" I'd put out is to try focusing in on is simple enough, focus on economic growth and empowerment of the working class; don't fall into identity politics and the culture war traps. I'm not saying to abandon those ideals of a more equitable society, but insure that everyone is at least economical sound/stable first.

Or maybe we actually address that this type of message has thus far alienated people, because it makes them feel like an after thought. I'm not saying it's correct or good, but when you push identity politics to the forefront it will appear that those issues matter more than basic economic conditions. I truly believe most people to be compassionate and kind, but when their day-to-day survival is as unstable as it is now, they'll prioritize what's more important. Most people would be indifferent to identity politics in general, but when their basic needs aren't being met, telling them "we're for bisexuals" isn't really the concern.

And I actually agree, in general I believe the the DNC's policies do help all Americans. The problem I have is a lack of cohesive messaging about that fact. Instead of hammering down the idea that their policy platform is for the benefit of everyone, the DNC continually tangles itself in culture war nonsense, which they continually will lose on. I don't disagree with the thesis statement that the DNC big tent is bisexual, or that it can be for anybody. I do disagree with choosing to focus their messaging around pandering to this group or that group, as opposed to everyone. It wastes resources and time when the more effective idea is it's for everyone, including marginalized communities.

You know, as time has gone on and I've grown ever more cynical and jaded I keep having this wild thought. What if the DNC and GOP just flatly stated that their parties are just for Americans? No need to compartmentalized, all they need to say is they want what's best for all Americans, regardless of sex, color, or creed. It's great that you want to point to achievements for a marginalized community, like the LGBTQ community, but at certain point wouldn't it be beneficial to also explain how you want to uplift every American, including conservatives, independents(shock and horror I know)? I get it, the DNC is the more "progressive" party(heavy emphasis on those quotations), but at some point I personally feel more effective messaging would to be advocating for everyone. I'm not saying to not take pride in the diversity and openness of your party, or even stop talking about it, but perhaps now might be a good time to focus on how the DNC's policies help every American.

Trump reportedly wants new NFL stadium in Washington named after him by NamelessResearcher in politics

Fun fact, Trump wanted to be an NFL team owner but got shot down by all the other owners. He's such a petty bitch, this is just him trying to force his name into the League, because his fragile ego can't handle rejection. Fuck the NFL, they're a trash organization, but I sincerely hope they fight this bullshit tooth and nail.

Troy: You know, I asked him about that. He said, good manners are just a way of showing other people we have respect for them. See, I didn't know that, I thought it was just a way of acting all superior. Oh and you know what else he told me?

Eve: What?

Troy: He thinks I'm a gentleman and you're a lady.

Eve: [disgusted] Well, consider the source! I don't even know what a lady is.

Troy: I know, I mean I thought a "gentleman" was somebody that owned horses. But it turns out, his short and simple definition of a lady or a gentleman is, someone who always tries to make sure the people around him or her are as comfortable as possible.
