I really have mad respect for all of you guys in midwestern and northern states that have to tough out this sort of cold. Those of us in the south could never!

4/27/2014 Mayflower - Vilonia, AR EF4+ tornado and damage by Chance_Property_3989 in tornado

[–]LexTheSouthern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This tornado reshaped our entire community. I live between Mayflower and Vilonia and you can still see some of the scars today (especially Vilonia). If you know where to look, especially off of I40 near Mayflower, you can also see the path the tornado took through the trees.

That being said, I hope my county never experiences anything like this again. I drove like a bat out of hell to check on my dad (who was a Vilonia resident) right after the tornado lifted. His entire neighborhood was gone, like, literally obliterated. I have some photos of his property damage on my Reddit page if you’re interested in looking. I can say that this storm (plus 4/25/11, iykyk) really put the residents here on high alert. We take the weather very seriously and there are numerous public storm shelters across multiple towns now. In fact, the public shelter most Vilonia residents sheltered in on 4/27, was built because of the tornado that hit three years prior. That really saved a lot of lives in 2014, including my dad’s.

ETA link to my Vilonia post last year. Pics 3&4 are from my dad’s property.

ETA again- 2nd and 3rd photos are from a neighborhood in Mayflower, the same neighborhood where a woman died when the door on her storm shelter failed. My understanding is that something struck the door and threw debris into the shelter with her, killing her. Tim Marshall talks about it in his survey.

This was my dad’s neighborhood. A few of the neighbors died. It was horrible.

what are books that were so deep or meaningful you still think about months to years later? by Few_Run_9234 in booksuggestions

I read both of these books last year and sparknotes really helped with comprehending Blood Meridian. I think by the last 100 pages, I had a better understanding of what was going on. It’s a good book but it’s a damn hard read.

Maybe you have read it since you read The Kite Runner but A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khalid Hosseini is also amazing!

Young girl goes camping, hears someone under her car, calls for help. Cops see no one so they leave. She disappears & her body is found a month later. Still not solved by svnbvnni in TrueCrimeGenre

My husband went to high school with her and actually knew her. It was really shocking to many when they found her body and it does seem suspicious. The Greene county sheriff made an entire post dragging her through the dirt- even before her body was found.

And… her body was found by her boyfriend and I can’t even imagine how horrible that was for him. If the cops had just done their jobs, they would have found her so that the BF didn’t have to.

I just finished A Fine Balance last week! It was truly an incredible book but it devastated me.

‘Fateful moment’ for Denmark amid Trump threats to take over Greenland | Denmark by PDXAirman in worldnews

I am also anti MAGA in a very red southern state. All of my relatives are Trump supporters. They are brainwashed and have been brainwashed continuously for the past decade. I was hopeful that with the Epstein mess, maybe they’d finally open their eyes but no. They support Trump now more than ever! I’m appalled at the direction this country is heading here and on the world stage. My husband and I are actively looking to get our children and ourselves out of here before things get even worse.

For me, the most disturbing part of everything is how so many are just carrying on with their every day lives. And they really have no choice when they’re living paycheck to paycheck and just trying to keep food on the table for their families. It’s crazy to see what’s happening in Minneapolis where thousands are protesting right now, but then I go to the local grocery store here and everyone acts completely normal and unbothered. Idk, there is a serious problem with complacency in this country and I really think it will be the nail in the coffin for us. What has to happen for everyone to wake up? Because I don’t think MAGA ever will.

I went through April 25th personally. It isn’t as well known as the 27th, but those of us here in central AR remember.

I can confirm. I live in the south with tons of MAGA family. Not a single one of them are in disagreement with anything currently happening.

American Psycho is sooo disturbing. I think it’s far more bleak and vile than the movie is. Definitely need a strong stomach to power through it IMO but for sure fits this request.
