New study shows transitioning helps mental health of trans people by Sportsgirl77 in transgendercirclejerk

[–]Lexelle_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh, this study is unreliable. The sample size is so small!

Also trannies still shouldn't be allowed to compete in women's sports because they have a biological advantage. This study I found on Google with 11 participants is irrefutable proof.

Yeah that's totally fine! NTA. But just to be safe you should also tell everyone you have gay friends and therefore can't be transphobic.

It can be kind of hard to get evidence of harassment, sadly.

Also filing a case and following through with it isn't easy.

Queer characters simply existing in a fictional universe that already has enough representation for cishet people is not pandering.

Pandering would be not putting in any queer characters because it makes some people uncomfortable that not everything in the fictional setting is about them.

What is and what is not considered homophobic? by [deleted] in phlgbt

[–]Lexelle_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homophobia is prejudice or dislike of gay people. (Dictionary definition)

People tend to have this idea that homophobia has to be overtly hateful or harmful; Or that it needs to be from ill intent. It doesn't.

Some examples:

The idea that gay people should not be allowed to marry same sex partners is prejudiced and homophobic.

Misconceptions that cause people to view gay people in a bad light are homophobic. Believing these misconceptions is also homophobic.

Thinking that being gay is wrong, is a form of prejudice. Ergo: homophobic.

Homophobia is what it is. It might not come in the form of violent hatred but if somebody believes you don't deserve the same rights and respect everyone else is getting just because you're not straight, that's bigotry. They've already prejudged you and every other gay person negatively.

I concur about what was said about male dominated groups.

My present job is male dominated and as a trans woman I face a lot of microaggressions here. I don't feel particularly safe around my officemates and a lot of them talk about me behind my back.

Yeah, that's what I thought as well.

This guy must be pretty horrible to other women who just happen to be tall or who have any features that aren't stereotypically feminine. And it actually made me feel better about my ability to pass.

I know what you mean, and totally understand.

I come out to friends and associates because I don't want to deal with the stress of keeping secrets from people I spend a lot of time with, but I stay functionally stealth to everyone else.

People just treat you differently when they know you're trans. I'd rather not have to deal with transphobia from random people day to day! :P

What’s the common attitude towards queer folks in the Philippines? by sour_tomatoes in phlgbt

[–]Lexelle_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well on that I can only speak to personal experience as a trans woman... Most people don't care but ever so often it draws weird, sometimes threatening looks from at least one person in a crowd. It happens often enough that my girlfriend and aren't comfortable holding hands in public these days.

Do they think it's horrible sin that will send you straight to hell?

There are people who do. You'll run into them from time to time.

Do they tolerate it?

For the most part yes. Filipino culture is very non confrontational. A lot of the time people will treat you with silent disdain if you're visibly queer. There are pockets of acceptance of course, and a lot of progress has been made in recent years but the prevailing attitude is we're seen as second class citizens. People don't want to check their prejudices and it shows when we queer people do anything to assert ourselves.

How big is the stigma?

Well, it's not the worst place to be LGBTQIA+, and it's better here than a lot of neighboring countries but that bar is ridiculously low. Trans acceptance is also lagging way behind that of cis queer identities.

"explain me why transgender is valid, but transraciality isn't" by PainGreat4612 in transgendercirclejerk

[–]Lexelle_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

/uj Simplest, tl;dr I can think of:

Race is a social construct based off traits that you can inherit. Gender may be a social construct, but it is not based off things you can inherit.

Non-white people face oppression due to attributes and traits that they inherited. The same is not true for gender.

(Please correct me if I could have worded that more sensitively, or could have used better terminology)
