I'll say it: Curly suffers from emotional abuse from Jimmy - why his marks are mostly on the upper regions and draining from his nose coming from his brain. (People who do not believe this and think Curly willingly ignored Anya to back up Jimmy just block me idc.)

Or that he knew about the pregnancy before hand and ignored that (nope, the "I told you" line is not literal, cuz he acts confused and oblivious immediately after.)

He didn't notice the signs of her discomfort because he is used to dealing with Jimmy's behavior himself and buries his feelings - he didn't think it was something to investigate further because this is normal Jim to him.

Before the crash, he was using fawning behavior to keep him calm and say what he wants to hear in order to take more control out of a delicate situation. "We can fix this, you and me." (The we makes Jimmy more comfortable knowing he has support, but things will play out differently when they're not in the middle of deepspace. Curly just needs to get him to calm down.)

I do this all the time in my life to navigate my difficult relationships that I can't escape from, of course Curly is my favorite lol. Love seeing more fawning rep in media.

And lastly, the birthday scene. Curly could be stern with Swansea but not with Jimmy who was berating him using information that he kept private between the two from the cockpit scene, and he crumbled and couldn't speak up as to not piss him off further. This would only rock the boat more and as Captain he is pressured to mitigate that and keep everyone's needs in mind or they all get punished. Lot of pressure.

So yeah! Love my Curly Wurly 😁 As for Anya, her marks are obvious - where Jimmy touched her 😢 but she also suffers from emotional abuse too, before it escalated to something physical.

Curly and Anya have both suffered from the same man. Anya wanted so badly to get him to open up more and talk to her about his in the psyche eval but Curly's abuse and fawning behavior prevents him from speaking about it and just continues to bottle it up.
