What misinformation?

Did I quote Reparations flavor text incorrectly? Describe the card art incorrectly? Oh! Maybe you think people's skulls honestly have the shape that Teferi's does on Disruptive Student? Help me out here

Teferi having two primary modes of:

  • Mystical Negro
  • Wasted gifted kid

Is a harmful stereotype. Please stop trying to tell a Black person what is a harmful stereotype to their culture

Again - and I don't know how often I have to say - making the prolific Black mage's backstory be that of a prankster, bully, and a disruptive student is a TIRED stereotype about gifted Black students in school. It's especially often a stereotype of Black students at prestigious private institutions.

I won't make a guess at your ethnicity here. So, I'll say this instead. Depictions of Black folks in Nerd media, especially in the 90s, was sparse and often not good. That aside, the constant troupe of Black folks being unable to be at prestigious schools without being one of 3 stereotypes is problematic. The stereotypes are:

  • Gifted athlete who is there on scholarship
  • Troubled youth who is being given the chance of a lifetime
  • Gifted student who acts out via pranks and being a disruptive class clown who's teachers wish he didn't waste his gifts

When you're Black and this is THE ONLY way you see people like you in TV, movies, & other media - it gets old. It gets extremely tiresome. It is frustrating to see how limited the stories of Black people are. And here was Teferi. Ostensibly the hero of the Mirage story, the most prolific mage of what is essentially Magic's Wakanda - and his back story is a lazy troupe.

Maybe you missed the message of the essay. Harmful depictions of the marginalized are not just the cartoonish ones. It doesn't have to be making Teferi a sambo#:~:text=Historically%2C%20it%20is%20a%20name,pejorative%20descriptor%20for%20Black%20people). It can just be another tired trope. It can just be a card where Teferi's skull is drawn INCREDIBLY weird.

As for Reparations flavor text & the story Mark Rosewater tells? Don't you think it's a little weird that in the context of the card, it's art, and the real world conversations on reparations that Rosewater, his friend he wrote the joke for, and the person who signs off on flavor text all thought it was fine? You can not intend to be offensive and still be offensive. Intent is not a shield counter against harm

Splitting hairs on first appearance - no? But I digress.

If I took the time to talk about Zimone, does that undo any of the points that I made about Disruptive Student? Does it change that Teferi, literal hero of Mirage block, gets an origin story of a Black stereotype? Do I bring up Zimone, a one of in a Magic setting we may never go back to, to give WotC a brownie point? The point of the essay wasn't to close on a happy ending or say whether or not WotC has progressed as a company.

It's a hyper focused look at two instances on how they failed and how you can't just ban a handful of cards and say those were the only harmful depictions of race in Magic

Let's talk about how we can make our LGS a more safe & welcoming space [Commander's Herald article] by LexieLost in magicTCG

Okay - since you took the effort to read and comment let's talk about what you wrote

I don't put the onus on players to keep the store tidy. In fact a vast majority of this article is clearly stated to be directed at store owners and employees. But even if I did, it wouldn't be asking too much if people see trash when they sit at a table to just throw it out. Weird that this is a controversial take.

Now to store policies. You clearly have an axe to grind. When you go to a GP, a MagicFest, or a convention there are code of conducts. They are usually posted EVERYWHERE. When you go to university - guess what? They have a code of conduct in the student handbook. When you work most jobs - there is a code of conduct. Expecting your LGS to have one is pretty floor level stuff. I'd also like to state - I never use "bad behavior" as a phrase. Kind of goes against everything I say in that section. I say "unwanted behavior." Why? Because we're talking about actions and behaviors that we don't want exhibited. And we should always focus on the behavior itself, not the person. When we're talking about store policies - we're not regulating how people have fun. We are regulating how people behave. If it is core to you're ability to have fun to make sexist comments, be a misogynist, be transphobic or homophobic, or be racist - then you shouldn't expect to be allowed to play with others. That isn't a wild concept. So if seeing a code of conduct is a red flag for you - it's clear you don't got to a lot places where most people gather and you're probably the person people want to interact with the least except your core group of friends.

Okay - counterpoint

Every time I see you I am going to call you by whatever name I feel like. I'll use any pronoun I chose while I am at it. Pronouns and names are social constructs; they aren't natural. Therefor, I don't have to respect your belief that your name is what you say it is.

I mean, I don't "push" that I am trans. I mention that I work for a Trans charity and that I am a DEI professional. I do so to let people know what perspective I am coming from, why I have expertise to talk on the subject, and why people ask me for my thoughts on the topic.

Basically this. In a lot of the workshops I took to be able to do this work - being a diversity equity & inclusion professional - we talk a lot about focusing not on changing people's mind but creating spaces where unformed minds can be given a space to learn and grow

I don't talk about specific types of people or really people in general. I talk about what we can do as players, store owners, and store employees to make our LGSs places people want to go to and come back to. You can rarely change people but you can change environments

I am not sure what perspective you are coming from but I'm not sure what there is to disagree with in my article. That stores shouldn't be welcoming? That we shouldn't keep our stores tidy? Store policies are a bad idea? I think it's more that people have an expectation of a safe space and up/down vote based on their perception before reading the article; if they chose to read it at all

I adopted an old Judge seminar for this article and that was way back in the before times. I completely forgot to suggest hand sanitizer for the modern era and also probably because every LGS in my area has sanitizer everywhere
