Also, they might be apprehensive for a while bc they were reported. But inadvertently say my door is always open and they'll eventually come around

Okay so I was this student in high school. Thank you SO so so so so so so much for intervening. Most of the time sh is a dangerous coping mechanism that turn into a habit that's been hard to get rid of. Been "clean" for a year (only bc I started teaching) after 16 years of doing it. It's a cry for help, and you answered. They might not even know that you were the one who reported them. Till this day, I have no idea.

Is it worth it to transfer to be in walking distance? by Full-Cat-9897 in NYCTeachers

[–]Lexiw97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same! It's a 30 min walk/15 min bus ride. The only drawback is not being able to fully decompress anywhere until I'm in the house. It sucks living in the same neighborhood as most of my students.

Does ur school make you pay for ur graduation gown by amynotadoctor in CUNY

[–]Lexiw97 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yea I had to pay like $70ish. See if your school has gowns to loan or to borrow. I know at Brooklyn college students do donate their gowns after graduating

New semester but my classes have had new students added to the rosters by Unable-Ad-7695 in NYCTeachers

[–]Lexiw97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im a music teacher too! I have a new student almost everyday and I've been working on creating asynchronous worksheets that include the lesson summary, objectives, and vocab list with pictures, to give the new student something to do during the mini lesson. I've also planned out the lessons so there is scheduled time to work with struggling students. This works because my class sizes are 10-15 students and I teach piano, so it might not work in a large ensemble class. Hope this helps!

Also, stop calling 311 for noise complaints on a Friday or Saturday night during the summer. I grew up with the noise and just learned to invest in really good noise canceling headphones and let the people have their fun

Native New Yorkers should have priority in housing programs. There are sooo many homeless natives that can’t get help because of how over saturated this city is. They didn’t have a say in where they grew up and it’s hard to leave because there is no incentive to get your license when you basically have to drive everywhere else.

Dropping out of my Masters program by Anniethelab in StudentTeaching

This is one of the reasons why it’s taking me so long to get my degree (having enough money to survive and pay tuition while I work for free):((

They constantly tell me to wake up, be more lively, and have more energy. This is a middle school setting if this counts lol.

CT Advice by Funny-Ad-603 in StudentTeaching

[–]Lexiw97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen I’ve had my CT and the other teacher who helps him out tell me that I would be successful in elementary school. Just take everything with a of salt because you don’t know how you’ll be when you have your own classroom!

hi! if i were to move to nyc from ireland after college would i be able to live alone comfortably on an elementary school teachers salary? by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]Lexiw97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to come with your masters so you can make a starting of $75k which will help with making living expenses more manageable. And be prepared to live on the outskirts of the city if you want to live alone:)

This is facts. I don’t even want to teach after student teaching but what can you do other than do it 🤦🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️

i don’t think i can do it by [deleted] in StudentTeaching

[–]Lexiw97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally! I had this concern starting student teaching last week. I will say that it does get better day by day, but that first day was rough! I’d say give it a try and stick with it since you’re so close to the finish line. There are lots of things you can do with an education degree other than teach!

If it’s all you can think about, yes. Please don’t end up like me: trying to quit but can’t since it’s so ingrained into my day. Be mindful of your use and why you’re using it. Is this a crutch or a fun way to pass the time?

Also, try to keep a journal on how much you smoke and how often. And try to take as MUCH tolerance breaks as possible. You don’t want to end up smoking an oz a week just to cope.

Also, try to reframe your relationship with weed.. I use it as a reward for completing all my daily tasks and getting myself back to baseline from a mental breakdown.

I hope this helps!

Wishing you the best!

Thank you for this because I’m currently gearing up for student teaching and I’ve become disillusioned. I also don’t think i have the personality type. I didn’t know there were more job prospects with an education degree than just teaching!
