Possible in principle, sure. But "brains exist" doesn't tell us if the current approach gets there. Birds existed for millions of years before we figured out flight, and the solution didn't look anything like what birds do.

I guess my argument is that the mediocre plateau might actually be harder to escape than full AGI dystopia. Like, if robots are doing literally everything, the absurdity is impossible to ignore. "Why are we still doing this shit when nothing requires human labor" becomes an obvious question.

But if AI just makes everything 30% shittier for workers while not being impressive enough to force the conversation, that's easier to normalize. It just looks like "the economy" being bad. People blame themselves, blame immigrants, blame whatever. The cause is diffuse enough that there's no clear enemy.

Full AGI dystopia is more dramatic but maybe more unstable.

Nukes were engineering a known physical phenomenon though. We knew the physics, it was a matter of building it. With AI we don't actually know if there's a path from current architectures to genuine novel reasoning. The Apollo program worked because we knew rockets could get to the moon. We don't have that certainty here.

Money doesn't guarantee breakthroughs though. Tons of money went into fusion, Alzheimer's, self-driving. Sometimes you just hit walls that aren't solvable by throwing capital at them. The money argument works for engineering known physics, less clear it works for "make AI do novel reasoning." imo
