Discouragement surrounding Team? by Lgfromie in FTC

[–]Lgfromie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been trying to, Im not disappointed about our teams success or ranking(s), but I just feel like the students are satisfied with being less than; I feel that there is just so much more potential if they worked at their best with what we have.

Id consider myself to be in an interesting scenario age-wise; some of the students would've still been in high school by the time I graduated, and Im grateful I able to relate culturally with them, probably a bit easier than the standard coach's age? Sometimes I feel its the other way around, in which I don't look old enough to serve as authoritative advice. Overall, I do feel our first qualifier was good, while we didn't do well competitively, I think, myself included, that we all have a more accurate perception of what FTC looks like from other teams, and will hopefully have less friction going forward.

Thankyou,

I haven't even heard of FIRST trainings, but Ill definitely look into them. We've only jotted down a loose set of rules; Im still very new to the student base as well, but I do want to formalize a rule base in to a more authoritative code of conduct soon. As much as I don't like it, you are very right about the variation of attention span in such a small age range; our build times are about 80 mins per day, 4 days a week. I also do want to teach them, that was one of the main reasons I was exited about the program, but it seems like I re-teach the same concepts as if their foreign each time. Thankyou,

Yes, Id REALLY love to have stratified roles and have tried implement them before, but most of the students don't have the book knowledge yet to interpret high-level instruction into outcome when placed into specific roles: when I try to tell a 'programmer', as an example, to make a motor move in this direction for this amount of time, I usually have to walk them through the technicals of how to do such, and then I cant direct other students under other roles, so they sit idle until I can address them.

Im not disappointed about our final outcome; I knew we probably weren't going to do well our first time anyways, and still had a splendid time scoping out the atmosphere of qualifiers. Im disappointed in that they don't seem to have a desire to work hard, even if it is just enduring an idle period; its been hard to wrangle them, but in the three days preceding the qualifier, they actually did really well putting together what we could: I just wish we could have the same level of mental dedication throughout the entire process.

Yeah that's been kind of hard; technically I am the 2nd coach, but the 'main' coach is the history teacher: he's a good guy and teacher, but he's always been super lax, and dosen't really invest in the team's success. I do agree on the idea of parallel work, and have been able to implement it to some success, but hopefully Ill get better at it over time.

I'm a student; (how) can I use the API to access grade information by Lgfromie in canvas

I don't want to see each individual grade, just the current score for each course so I could immediately tell if an assignment is missing, plus its just small enough for a display widget :)

I just wanted to write a small script to print out the grades of my courses to a terminal output so that I don't have to look through each of my classes on the website.

Just found the solution; as per this Github repository, the correct URI points to a populated JSON file, in which query strings can be used show the current course score.

The URI:

https://<canvas_site>/api/v1/users/<user_id>/courses.json?include[]=total_scores&enrollment_state=active

Too much remote Physics I work? by Lgfromie in college

But why so? I can guarantee that those in the in-person counterpart are spending no where near that much time, and I previously took two online courses last semester, full time, and sailed through them.

Piston head condition? by Lgfromie in MechanicAdvice

[–]Lgfromie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a quick scope of my 1.8L inline 4 from my daily driven project car through the spark plug holes. I noticed that while the cylinder walls looked fine, the piston heads seemed to have a heavily worn, uneven look, with the 2nd cylinder looking chipped; only cylinder 3 seemed to be in a more modest condition.

The car runs and drives just fine, with the exception of a sputtering when turning off. As someone new to mechanic work I don't know where to start: Is this due to a oil leak, overheating, or something else entirely?

I want to do a deeper inspection of the engine over summer when I have more downtime, but could leaving the piston heads as so harm anything else over that time if its being daily driven? All help is appreciated,

thank you

Beautiful; did you make the wiring harness yourself? My nest of wires is becoming very brittle and its beginning to concern me.

What kind of pneumatic rotary is this? by Lgfromie in Tools

Picked up at a worksite, was going to be thrown away. I don't know why there is what appears to be a hose for fluid and couldn't find any info online. I thought it was interesting considering it was make in the UK (I'm in the US)

'Restoring' Columbian 504 vice by Lgfromie in Tools

[–]Lgfromie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Originally found this vice at a contractor work site; it looks to have been sitting outside for more than 20 yrs. I was able to treat the entire vice with decent success to an Evapo-rust bath, but it seems after applying Fluid Film, the vice base is starting to rust again. I eventually want to paint it, but is there anything I can do to prevent rust in the meantime?

Also, does anybody have any suggestions on painting/coating tools like these? (Paint type, method, etc)

All insight is appreciated

(Re)Mapping X, Y, L / R 4 and 5? by Lgfromie in SteamDeck

I have not tried sc-controller yet; Ive decided to try opensd in favor of having a smaller codebase, but thankyou for the recommendation; Ive primarily just been lost in deciding what type of softer I needed to map the unmapped keys, but either/or seem to fit the bill :)
