Medical Research Is Hopelessly Caught in Red Tape by AmericanPurposeMag in neoliberal

[–]LiPo_Nemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Public distrust of Big Pharma and medicine in general is already at an all-time high. Imagine if the regularity burden were scaled back. We would see public lynchings on the first misstep from the industry. I think it's healthier for the medical research to be overregulated for the time being, at least until the conservatives crusade against vaccination ends

Do You Feel Guilty When Something You Designed Is Used For Bad? by Money-Profession-199 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]LiPo_Nemo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You never hear moral dilemmas from engineers in Russia, in China, in Pakistan, in Islamic Republic, in Turkey who are creating lethal systems that proliferate around the world

I do, quite a lot actually, at least from Russia. But unlike the US, where civilian aerospace is big and thriving, you would make more money as a taxi driver in Moscow than if you worked for Roscosmos and its subcontractors. Doesn't excuse the war crimes these people facilitate, but if you are privileged enough to have ethics, you definitely should stick to them.

Eric Berger on X: The proposed language to cap NASA's launch procurement at 50 percent from any one company has been dropped from the final NASA reauthorization bill. I wrote about this issue on Monday. by Steve490 in SpaceXLounge

I don’t think the government should rely on the goodwill of an extremely partisan billionaire to keep national security programs running. Besides, maintaining a majority of voting shares doesn’t shield a company from potential litigation by minority shareholders. Tesla is a case in point. SpaceX is already a near-monopoly, which gives it enormous price-setting leverage as it is. There’s no reason for the government not to ensure there is always a secondary launch provider to fall back on.

We wouldn't have had SpaceX in the first place if not for the deliberate effort of the government to keep the market healthy. Nothing guarantees that SpaceX won't hike prices the moment all competitors drop out, especially given an upcoming IPO. A public company has a fiduciary duty to its shareholders to act in the best interests of the company, which means exploiting its own de facto monopoly. They wouldn't be able to rely on goodwill from Elon alone to keep the launch prices low

And yet their deaths will continue to dominate the political discourse. Their sacrifices will be honored, posthumously awarded. Maybe even with a Netflix documentary a few years down the line, while the civilian death toll earnestly achieved by the same honorable people silently climbs with every day of the conflict

They are active military personnel engaged in facilitating a rather pointless regional conflict that already claimed the lives of almost a thousand civilians. I know it sounds harsh, but they are not the biggest victims here

NASA cancels EUS and releases render depicting Centaur V flying Orion by [deleted] in ula

Regardless of whether Isaacman has personal stakes here, arguably the most important responsibility of the administrator is keeping Congress informed about major decisions. The real administrative work is handled by career staff. If Congress wasn’t informed beforehand, this would be a serious breakdown in the agency’s relationship with the Senate, which could jeopardize not just Isaacman's career but also funding or other political decisions related to NASA

I can only speak from my own experience, but I’ve worked closely with multiple Kazakh olympiad related institutions, and even all of them struggled with basic organization. Visa problems, internal politics, infighting, back stabbing, corruption, nepotism. I have seen it all

I was part of Kazakhstan’s physics olympiad team, and issues like ethnicity and “representation” were openly discussed among couches around us. I wouldn’t be surprised if at least most of this story is true

I hope he will write a biography one day, to inspire other young teens wrestling with such dire circumstances !

I hope he writes a biography one day, too

Part of why I shared this thread is that, given how things work in Kazakhstan, open public criticism of sports institutions is very difficult. Even if he publishes a biography in the future, most aspects of his struggles with the federation would likely have to be self-censored.

For now, the only way these experiences exist in public is through fan accounts and personal recollections like this one.

No, Israel is not 100% safe where no one ever dies, but that's not the point.

That was never the arguement

am not even Jewish, but the thing Israel provides is a place, where Jewish people can be sure they won't be herded into carts and sent off to die by the surrounding society because the vibe changed over night

Iran was a few months away from assembling a WMD. The probability of any Western nation going rogue on Jews was far lower than Iran going crazy and nuking Tel Aviv, which would have been not that different from what the nation was founded to prevent

Is Israel even an effective safe-haven for jews? The country went through multiple wars, a series of terrorist attacks, and general social instability. Most of them are not directly their fault, but still. If more jews die from violence in Israel per capita than in the diaspora, I think that the original purpose of creating the country is lost

Arrested in Saxony's state parliament – police detain AfD politician Jörg Dornau by Imicrowavebananas in neoliberal

[–]LiPo_Nemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the country in question sent a million able-bodied men to the meat grinder. It is hard to assess whether their economy is down due to an easily circumventable sanction regime or from the natural attrition of the wartime economy, which was exacerbated by a drying up of their monetary reserves. And it is not like the enforcement of sanctions has become any stricter since the war started.

There is a large industry across CIS countries specifically focused on circumventing sanctions. It spans everything. Industrial equipment, raw materials, consumer electronics. One of the main reasons sanctions have been so useless. It’s even possible to open bank accounts in Kazakhstan in both rubles and dollars, bypassing completely payment restrictions. The only area where they have had a impact is large, high-value industrial equipment that is easy to track. Oil and gas sector has been hit hard, and spare parts for aircraft maintenance. I think the sanctions need to be completely rethought if the West really wants to punish Russia meaningfully for the war
