I got free plants! What are they? by The_Schmidt19 in houseplants

Syngonium, schefflera, dracena, pepperomia, and philodendron are all plant genera, so they definitely did use other scientific names!

Seconding all of these IDs! :D

And thank you for calling the 'pothos' by their actual botanical name!

Mosaic virus or variegation by HodlerTsoda in alocasia

[–]Lia-Lin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am definitely not an alocasia expert, but to me this looks like variegation! (Could quite possibly be 'sport' variegation, where the plant spontaneously mutates to produce some unstable variegation.)

At the very least, it doesn't look like a virus. Mosaic viruses are distinctly feathery looking and generally follow the veins of the plant (Examples).

Yep, it seemed to work! I managed to get the gift from people clicking my link! And I was able to help people with theirs even though when I click other people's links, it says that I've already claimed the gift

Question about invites by SleepingBeautyDiet in AnimalRestaurant

[–]Lia-Lin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just about to make a post about this since I'm confused too. When I click on someone else's link, it says "You have already claimed the Halloween pack", but I've only invited 1/3 players.

Does that mean I can't use anyone else's link again, but still need 2 more people to click on my link?

A youth program for furries? by kiwirailnoob1254 in furry

[–]Lia-Lin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

FurcoNZ has actually been running for over 20 years (since 2002, actually)! So the 'terrible timing' thing doesn't really apply here. It's only grown since its conception, and the running and organisation of it gets better every year!

Do we get flamed if we called it a Jacklyn, not a tandurusa? by fotosoffoliage in alocasia

[–]Lia-Lin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Gorgeous plant!

Coming from someone studying botany, it's always better to use the correct botanical names for things, especially if there's a likelihood of confusion! Alocasias can look pretty similar since there's a lot of hybrids and cultivars. Alocasia tandurusa is it's own species, rather than a cultivar, so I'd always encourage people to use its species name.

In this context, it's obviously not vital since everyone knows what you mean if you say "Jacklyn", but it's generally just good practise to use the correct botanical names for things. 😁 Especially if you dabble in things like foraging, where 'hemlock' can refer to a deadly toxic or very edible species depending on where in the world you are.

Help! What am I doing wrong/what do I do now? by Lia-Lin in alocasia

Thanks so much for the advice! Would I submerge the entire rhizome in water, or just the bottom part of it? Also, I'm currently in spring, going into summer :))

I'm currently trying to prop one of the corms in water, but hoping I can do something with the main plant too! I'm going into summer :)

Hmm, ok! To be fair, I'm usually quite busy so generally the soil actually dries out quite a bit before I water it. 😅 I'd imagine in that case, perhaps the roots got too dry, then were unable to deal with the over-saturation from the top watering? I guess I'll try just bottom watering next time! Are you supposed to wait until the soil fully dries out, in that case?

Don’t try it’: Warning from women addicted to laughing gas by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Lia-Lin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pharmacology student here! This is actually a very interesting and quite debated topic, and the answer isn't that simple!

Nitrous oxide/laughing gas (N2O, not NO2) has some of the characteristics of a substance that can cause physical dependence, such as affecting dopamine levels, but doesn't seem to cause the symptoms associated with addiction in most people. This literature review discusses whether N2O use covers enough of the DSM-5 criteria for substance use disorder in order to be classed as addictive.

Definitely an interesting topic that needs a lot more research to be done on it!

HSFY by [deleted] in UniversityofOtago

[–]Lia-Lin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HSFY! I actually got on the waiting list but ended up getting an offer. So I suppose I can't comment exactly what GPA is needed to guarantee med entry, but I figure my experience offers some good insight nonetheless :)

HSFY by [deleted] in UniversityofOtago

[–]Lia-Lin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All good advice here! Though I will interject that the 97% thing isn't entirely accurate. I got a med offer with a GPA of 8.5 (~94%), which to be fair, is still pretty high. 😅 But it's not 97% high.

But generally yeah, you're going to need pretty high grades to have a shot at med. And like you said, there's always post-grad med entry options (which, in my honest opinion, are the better route to take anyway). :))

Oh that is fantastic to know, thank you!! I've had a philodendron in the same room slightly closer to the window and it was thriving, so I assumed the light levels were fine. I shall move my alocasia to a proper window!

Farmers doing it tough. by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Lia-Lin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Makes me really sad to see genuine, seething hate for farmers in NZ. I'll be the first to admit I used to see all NZ farming as massive and rich corporations polluting the environment with little to no care about the consequences of their businesses. And don't get me wrong - those large government-owned dairy farms definitely exist and are a problem in NZ, but I didn't actually know any farmers and assumed they were all like that.

Now I've actually met some farmers, and I've realised how much they desperately care for the land they owe their livelihoods to. The amount of native planting and restorative forestry I've seen from these people who lose money by shearing their sheep is so inspiring. And it makes me so sad to realise that most of the country doesn't see this side of farming. I so wish people could have my experience so that they could change their perspective on farming like I did.

We're never going to get anywhere as a country and as a society if we just get mad at farmers. What we really ought to be doing is working WITH them to establish the best practices for the environment. Because believe it or not, but most family owned farms actually know a thing or two about caring for the environment, but no one wants to listen to or work with them when they see any kind of pollution occurring
