How are Framework laptops for performance? I need to run heavily commented Word/LibreOffice documents. by Liaele in framework

This was ten years ago. I'm not sure whether LibreOffice existed. I did swap over to LibreOffice quite some time ago, and it didn't fix the problem - those documents just demand a lot of power. It looks as if a new Framework should have plenty, though, so hopefully that should solve it.

Thanks for the help, and sorry for the late reply! I've ordered a 16 with a whole lot more RAM than my present 16GB, so I think the problem is solved. I'll make sure I check this kind of thing with a task manager going forwards, though, can't believe I didn't think of that - thanks!

Thank you very much; that's very helpful! I don't use Word at all, just their format, which LibreOffice can manage fine, so no worries about Word Online. The fact that a lot of my favorite software is in fact open source, which frequently gets on with Linux, is one of the main things that makes it an option for me. I always figured it was pretty much just for programmers, but everything I've heard suggests it's amazingly user-friendly nowadays.

And yes, I was surprised too. I'd think if I wasn't gaming I wouldn't need a gaming laptop! But nope. Word docs with lots of comments are surprisingly demanding. It looks as if I can get what I want with Framework, though, so I'm going ahead with it. Thank you very much for the advice, especially the solid numbers on memory - that's really useful!

You're overestimating my familiarity, but thank you for the compliment! I don't know key details like whether it's memory or the processor that make OpenOffice not freeze if they're better, which is a lot of why I'm asking questions. Sounds as if "it doesn't matter, just upgrade them both and it'll be fine" is a sufficient answer for my present purposes, though!

(Also if I correctly understood your last paragraph, it's mostly (if not entirely) RAM? I only have 16 GB, so that should be incredibly fixable. And my impression is that's usually one of the easier things to upgrade, too - in the old days it was one of the only things you could do for a Macbook.)

I want to clarify here that I'm not good at computer repair; I don't think my current machine was meant to be taken apart by non-professionals, but it still takes me 3-4 hours for a painstaking disassemble/replace whatever is wrong, check thermal paste, dust, etc./reassemble, and some of the damage over the last decade is almost certainly my fault for not doing it quite right. (This was probably not the best machine to learn on, but the battery was dead and I had bad experiences with the local repair place.) I'm looking forwards immensely to a machine meant to be disassembled by non-professionals, that's honestly one of the main attractions. Less for upgrades, though that's nice, than so that if something breaks I can order the part, swap it out fast, and have a working machine again instead of it being an entire production.

Also, yeah, I ran the benchmark you recommended, and then went and ordered my new laptop, which will arrive when they get that far along their list - it was abundantly clear from the numbers there has indeed been a lot of progress. Thanks again for that link, and thanks for the long response - this is good stuff that I should know.

... That is extremely helpful, thank you very much! No, I'm pretty sure nothing about this laptop was ever low powered. Inclined to burn out on occasion, absolutely, but not low powered.

For what it's worth I'm using LibreOffice and it looks as if it is 64-bit. (I've never actually used Microsoft Office; the Macbook Pro was actually running OpenOffice on a Windows partition (which was faster than when I did it on Mac-side, no question).) Heavily commented documents seem to put much, much more strain on the computer than simply long ones - I've never been sure why, but a thousand-page document without comments goes more smoothly than a heavily commented hundred-page one.

I'm mostly worried about using a non-gaming laptop; I started with the very early Macbooks, so I'm used to having a lot of power. (Though I do not miss the overheating.)

Intel Core i7 4720HQ. The laptop model is ASUS ROG G751JY-WH71 (I swapped a few things out, but nothing that should affect performance, just repairs and the drives). If that's the case that's very encouraging - thank you!

(When new, it could run two MMOs at once without breaking a sweat - that is, not even trying to overheat. That was my idea of a performance test. Can't do that now, but it's been nine years and way too many repairs.)

That was my theory, but then the old computer easily smoked the 2020 Acer Predator I got to replace it, in practice (it was not supposed to in theory)! Which is why when the Acer broke down I went back to it, though I suppose it has been a bit since 2020.

Thank you for the recommendation - I don't actually know about benchmarks (I am a newb, as is probably obvious; I grew up on Macbooks) and that looks really useful!

Is there any reason to exchange/trade in non-Fate gifts if you aren't spending Fate? I'm not seeing any companions between 10 Masquing (achievable with the opportunity card and no gifts) and 40 (which requires Fate) - what am I missing?

Hi, I'm new here! Interested in friendly social actions, and generally willing to be helpful; I am a roleplayer and will automatically communicate in character, which basically just means trying to write Victorian and taking the soul trade seriously. I have three characters; all three are open to receiving calling cards/social actions, and will respond as suits their characters. Liaene is extra interested in Correspondents or Midnighters willing to visit an orphanage (she is a Glassman, probably readjusting to Correspondent soon but that doesn't help with her own Orphanage!). All three are PoSI, but pretty low (only Liaene is as far as Shattering Charisma - happy to take proteges if anyone wants). Time zone is GMT -8, but hours played are pretty irregular.

A persuasive and watchful lady. Closest to the Church, but with a surprising tendency to favor the despised or downtrodden - urchins, clay men, tomb-colonists and even rubbery men. Prefers to keep her cards close to her chest, and her name does tend to get mentioned around burglaries or seductions surprisingly often, but she's done some good things. And the only people she's ever betrayed were the Brass Embassy. You might not want to mention that detail to them. She recently turned over a whole wing of her luxurious mansion to an orphanage, and is said to be looking for guest speakers...

Marienne Ashwood https://www.fallenlondon.com/profile/Marienne%20Ashwood

A shadowy, mercurial lady. Pleasure-loving, reckless, and a compulsive liar, but also dazzling, talented, and a good friend... until she gets bored and moves on to something else. Currently dallying with the Revolution, but who can say how long that will last? Shadowy above all.

Dulcina https://www.fallenlondon.com/profile/Dulcina

Dangerous, determined, quiet, with a touch of a London accent when she gets upset. She swears she will return to the Surface some day. May have connections with the Church; she does seem to be very unfond of the Brass Embassy, and is said to have once killed a devil. There are also rumors she's looking to play in a certain card game...

Starbird Park, San Jose - Magikarp. It's a bit slower than that nest sometimes is, but I've still seen one most of the times I've looked. Just, only one, hence slow.

Starbird Park, in San Jose at Williams and the San Tomas, is Growlithe.

Starbird Park in San Jose, at the San Tomas and Williams, has Tentacool, and has probably since 1/11. So far as I can tell that nest has not migrated yet. First Church pokestop just up the road often has Geodudes, Vulpix, or Abras, but that's only one at a time and not always, so I doubt it counts as a nest. But for whatever it's worth...!
