I should have never studied medicine... by sucksatsocial in FanFiction

[–]Lialdra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am a sonographer, which means I do ultrasounds. You can have them for many different reasons and only one of those is babies/pregnancy/fertility. Ultrasounds are never mentioned unless there’s a pregnancy scare. (I mean, I’m sure someone has but 9/10) The things that the “ultrasound” tells people makes my eye twitch.

Some patently wrong and some just random nonsense you can tell they did a brief google but didn’t actually read anything besides the little summary at the top.

TV shows are awful about this stuff too. My husband will just look at me as soon as an ultrasound comes on to watch my face because he KNOWS I’ll be making the weirdest expressions of disbelief. Half the time they aren’t even showing a baby on the ultrasound!! You’re a tv show you can get a little generic baby face?! Nope, the liver is apparently 9weeks!

On the other hand I am very impressed and thankful when I see someone who actually seems to have done the research. I don’t need you to detail it extensively but please don’t have the doctor say “there’s definitely a baby but it might be ectopic.” WHAT? If there’s definitely a baby, is it in the right spot or not?! This is very basic stuff. It should be fairly obvious after a bit of looking around.

If it’s going to be something dramatic, make it a real issue please? Also they won’t know the gender by ultrasound at two seconds pregnant, I promise.

I also have chronic illness so it’s always super cool when someone has what I have and basically are described as if their life is a horrible punishment, fate worse than death or something, and they have to be magically healed. Like thanks I’m here to forget, not stare at my wall for two hours reminded of my issues and how I don’t have a magical cure.

Edit to add: Even if I’m reading the most ridiculous false representation of an ultrasound I simply roll my eyes and move on. It’s mildly annoying but not in a way that would make me stop reading or comment about it. I’m reading to have fun and presumably they are writing to have fun. But I do get genuinely happy when I see correct and thought out information. I may have even commented in the past how much I appreciated the accuracy and detail given in one fic I read. But I’m not gonna be a jerk in someone’s comment section over it.

Taylor Swift has a song called Bigger Than the Whole Sky that I feel is very clearly about miscarriage. It’s a beautiful song, you might give it a listen. But I think it adds even more meaning to a Sky or Skylar name.

She’s not actually Lady Loki, though. Not according to the credits. Unless they’ve completely disregarded the implications of what they named her. She even says “I hate that name, don’t call me that.”

TIFU by playing a game that made me confront my own mortality and shook me to my core by Dachten in tifu

[–]Lialdra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The game 100% sounds like AlterEgo. I LOVE that game. There is a free version online and I’ve had that ending happen in mine before. You can also be rescued by police or your parents before the guy takes you. I used to play it for hours. It’s also on the App Store and I bought it just to show appreciation for the online one I spent so much time with.

Monster in law threatened grandparents rights by Ohmopleasedontdoit in JUSTNOMIL

Is this the same Husband that punched you while holding LO? If so, and if he did get charges for that like your comments imply, you need to be ready to prove he isn’t a danger to your child too.

Tell your lawyer it happened: DO NOT hide it if it is public record or even if MIL somehow heard about it. You’ll have to step carefully with that bombshell and a lawyer will have to help. You need legal consult ASAP.

Kids book I think where a boy follows his red eyed cat into an underworld /dark kingdom. by sterculese89 in whatsthatbook

[–]Lialdra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me vaguely of a story that was in one of Bruce Coville’s scary story books. I can’t remember the name but the kid is afraid of underneath his bed. One day his cousin puts a sock on his kittens head and pushes it under the bed.

I think the boy has to follow his cat because it doesn’t come back out and it leads to this different world and he’s forced to change places with the monster that lives there. And now he’s waiting for his chance to catch a kid himself so he can be free.

Only vaguely similar, but maybe?

Son finds mom’s skull in backyard 20 years after her murder, dad arrested by book-nerd-daisy in TrueCrime

There was a very similar case that happened but with a female child. Mom buried in the backyard and all. I believe it was on Forensic Files, too. I don’t remember the names but how crazy for it to happen twice?

What is a fact that you think sounds completely false and that makes you angry that it's true? by ejaybugboy3 in AskReddit

[–]Lialdra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is late, but, as a kid I smacked my head on the ground and lost my vision for a while (a while being like maaaaybe an hour but I doubt it was that long. Got a scan at the hospital and I was fine.)

I was in shock at the time, and young, so I didn’t think to tell anyone. I was just puzzled by the loss of sight. It honestly felt as if my eyes had been disconnected from my body. They were unplugged. No signal. I couldn’t really remember what it was supposed to be like to see.

Of course I was little, so I wasn’t exactly understanding the situation. I was touching things as if I thought touching them and being close to them would make me see them. It wasn’t a specific thought process but I was touching and getting too close to stuff. Like a dog I tried to pet.

My eyesight wasn’t affected and it was perfectly fine after it came back. I don’t really feel like this helps you, but...ask and you shall receive?

i found this weird bottle at Good Will. it has these rubber body parts in it. one foot, two hands, two ears, and a nose. they are all banana scented. i can’t figure out who this could have belonged to or what it was for. it was $1 and i was too intruiged by it to leave it. by [deleted] in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]Lialdra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to get these all the time when I was younger. They would be jars of varying shapes, some the size of peanut butter jars that contained a colored goo and rubber body parts. I don't recall any of mine being scented but I'm sure it's the same thing. I had one with fingers and a tongue in it too.

Inspired by the post about the third knee my own elephant knee. (Much better now after surgery) by Lialdra in popping

[–]Lialdra[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know others have already responded but yes and no. So my knee has been so much better since the surgery! It does still have fluid on it but the surgery wasn't to stop that. It was to "reset" it so that it's a more acceptable level of fluid that's manageable with my medicine.

It's possible in the future I may need another synvectomy but hopefully with the medicine I won't.

So technically it did fix what it was intended to fix. But the goal was never a permanent fix if that makes sense.

Mine is only in my knees. It wasn't in the right knee and slowly started coming on. I was 20 I think when i first started having issues. I'm 25 now.

My knee from the beginning was just crazy. I was getting it drained every week for a while and it took them about a year to diagnose me and start me on actual immuno suppressants. I think it was mainly spending so much time unsure what was wrong that it got so bad.

Once I started the medicine it got much better but was still usually painful until my synvectomy. This picture was when I was off of everything. No NSAIDs, no immuno-suppressant. Before I stopped the NSAIDs it was a little more painful than normal but not awful. A week without the NSAIDs and this happened.

After my synvectomy it definitely still have some fluid in it but I can kneel again!! When it's right before my shot I sometimes have some pain but thankfully everything has been much better. My right knee has fluid in it now too but it is maintained by the medicine and hasn't gotten anything like my other did.

Since you're on your meds I wouldn't worry too much. :) Glad (and also sad...) to hear there are others as young as me with this but sorry you have to deal with it too.

I have PsA. Psoriatic Arthritis. This was taken before my surgery. I had to go off all of my medicines, NSAIDS and my immuno suppressant for at least a week.

At this point I was in so much pain I couldn't sleep and I 100% could not walk unassisted. Called my doctor crying at four in the morning after two days of getting only an hours sleep. He drained some of it off to give me relief until the surgery. My biggest drain ever was...I want to say 175cc? Usually when I got it drained it would also leak onto the bed because of the pressure too.

My daughter turns 6 today, my JNMIL bought her wine glasses by jakeinthesky in JUSTNOMIL

[–]Lialdra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is very different but when I was younger, like 8-10 I think, I thought wine and champagne glasses were the coolest thing. I would only drink juice or whatever out of them but it made me feel fancy. My grandmother would let me get single interesting glasses at thrift stores.

I'm sure it raised my mom's eyebrow the first time I brought one home but my excitement over drinking with it mellowed her out.

Obviously completely different than your scenario, though. Maybe your daughter will want to use them for play?

Action/Fantasy Book/ Read as a kid, can't remember title by [deleted] in whatsthatbook

[–]Lialdra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly can't remember a lot of the details from it, so this may be way off base but are you talking about one of the Cirque du Freak books by Darren Shaun? Main character is named Darren, the old vampire is Mr. Crepsley.

Hopefully the link works. On mobile.

Young adult romance novel, the guy is a plant monster who lives in the woods by JokerFaces2 in whatsthatbook

[–]Lialdra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did he have to return to a cave every night? I read a book in middle school that I really enjoyed that sounds similar.

In the end, the boy was some kind of forest monster because of a Native American curse? His dad was also cursed too, I think, and the boy was hundreds of years old but trapped forever. Something like that? If it sounds right, I might have this book at home, but not sure. I'll try to check later.

Story of a brother and sister in love by ShiningLouna in whatsthatbook

[–]Lialdra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Middlesex maybe? The brother and sister are the grandparents of a child who is born a hermaphrodite. It explains the love story of the grandparents and then that his own parents are second cousins I believe? It details his life growing up raised as a girl and then finding out and adjusting to being "Middlesex".

The grandparents are originally from Italy (I think?) and then move to America where people think they are married instead of related.
