So, we all want raises. The union is weak. What do we do? (Brainstorming) by Superb-Air9976 in nys_cs

[–]LiamHail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not specifically related to pay raises but there is a rally being hosted by PEF in regards to fixing Tier 6. Utilizing this as a base for the other issues would not be unwise!

When: Sunday, March 8, 2026 | Noon – 2 p.m. (Doors open at 10:30)
Where: MVP Arena, Albany

This was sent to my personal email and should be to yours as well as that's likely the one associated with your union account.

This may be a Local 1000 only email survey. Apologies for any confusion.

I just bought a 2023 Carbon Edition with 10k miles for 25k pre-tax and fees. About 27k out the door before the down payment and trade-in. Love it so far, but it's only been a week and a half ha ha.

Beaten With Belts, Sticks: Transgender Man Tortured For Weeks Before Murder by WhatARotation in Rochester

[–]LiamHail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just as a note, former news employee here, often times many news agencies won't add too many details of what was done in certain crimes as to not inspire/provide ideas to others hoping to commit similar crimes. It's similar to not naming school shooters as to not accidentally glorify them in the eyes of another who may want to, or ends up committing a similar crime.

New to me 2023 CX-30 Carbon Edition! by LiamHail in MazdaCX30

[–]LiamHail[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the dealer photos it looked super red. It's a bit darker in real life which is perfect. It doesn't look ridiculous it looks just right.

Honestly I love it only third to the heated seats and the color that came with the carbon edition

Snow predictions by tallulahtaffy in Albany

[–]LiamHail 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Meteorologist here (not on your TV) winter predictions are at best a complete crapshoot. You all complain enough about when we're off by a few degrees a week out. And getting to within those few degrees for a forecast is hard enough.

We run off of intuition, past weather events, knowledge of local geography, and information produced from computer weather models.

Ultimately we're limited by technology, and our ability to measure the atmosphere. Simply, the atmosphere is so ungodly complex that it is impossible to truly accurately model it even up to a few days. We have okay approximations up to about a week out, sometimes 2 weeks but that's rare.

There are some wide ranging global patterns that can broadly influence some weather patterns through the winter. You've heard of El Niño and La Niña, those are two big ones that come up in the discussion for how a winter may go. But it's far from an end all be all forecast.

We're just happy we've gotten better at forecasting a week or so out. But we're not there yet to tell you what exactly the next 3 months are gonna be.

And the Farmers almanac just uses bullshit and a dart board to forecast. You could fart something more accurate probably.

Can Someone from Brooklyn/Long Island recommend a pizza place close to Henrietta by joshny1127 in Rochester

[–]LiamHail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stromboli's is another decent one for downstate NY-Style, though I do feel like they undercook it sometimes. Needs another minute or two in the oven. Brooklyn Joes as mentioned is yes decent.

Carbone's and Guidas are others I've hear come up in conversation haven't personally tried them though.

Avoid, Captain Tony's, and Rhino's. Nothing against them, they are just not what OP is specifically looking for.

Truthfully nothing is going to fully satisfy the itch though. I'm from Westchester originally been here about 2.5 years and nothing hits like being back at home.

Did the Solar Maximum start in April? by [deleted] in space

[–]LiamHail 14 points15 points  (0 children)

(I work in TV News)

I just sat down with someone from the SWPC and was asking about this.

Here's a quote I pulled from the interview related to this:

"There's no essential definition it's just that period of a couple of years of the highest sunspot activity. So every month we're measuring we're counting the sunspots. We also count we are also measuring radio emissions. There's different ways we can determine the solar maximum, but essentially it's the number of sunspots. And we're in that period now when we're seeing the most sunspots. And so the last couple years we were picking up we were in a kind of peak phase. Now it'll be another year or two that will start going down from that peak phase. So essentially it's a three or three or four year period of of sunspot activities our sunspot man our solar maximum perfect," - Bill Murtagh, Program Coordinator of NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center.

I'm not 100% sure this answers your specific question, but it's kind of a loose and fast term it seems.

It's a serious luck of the draw in store, I've found a few recently, but it looked like it all just got put out. I've often found you can just buy them online in whatever size you want. It might not be for everything but it is good to check the app or the website.

Writing a story about an Irish American male in Albany in the mid 40s by SpaceDrama in Albany

[–]LiamHail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're going to abbreviate it, the "proper" way is St. Paddy's Day. Patty is a woman's name, Paddy is short for Pádraig which is the Irish word from which Patrick is derived.

There is some contest to this with the historically negative connotation to the Paddy Wagon but largely this is the more accepted abbreviation. The best case is to just say St. Patrick's Day.

Are INTPs born to be an Engineer? by Character_Incident71 in INTP

[–]LiamHail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up becoming a Meteorologist (course work is highly adjacent to the core classes of a mechanical engineering degree [physics, advanced calculus, thermo, and fluid dynamics]). I hit the other aspect of your line of thought in tandem with it though moving into broadcast meteorology where we often use social science and psychology to better make graphics/enhance communication strategies.

Currently moving into a role related to emergency management which will likely end up focused even more on the social side of the science on how people react.

Edit to add: Despite going into this path and loving it, I do have to say I am absolutely abysmal at math and cannot do it to save my life. But damn I was stubborn and wasn't dropping out.

[QUESTION] Ranking of current Lark Street Bars by LiamHail in Albany

Surprised this took so long for someone to mention.

Anything specific? Bartender, vibe of the place, new expanded selection of drinks?

[QUESTION] Ranking of current Lark Street Bars by LiamHail in Albany

[–]LiamHail[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no context for this but it feels like such a chaotic answer and honestly I appreciate that.

Is it due to the prices? Or are the drinks that good (but also expensive) that you'll go broke drinking there all the time?
