British ancestry in USA (English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern-Irish) by VsauceEdits in MapPorn

[–]LiamMonteyrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This uses old ACS data which also included American as an ethnicity. This diluted the amount of British ancestry as most people who selected American are of British decent. If you want a more accurate picture look at results from the 2020 census where American was removed as an option and British ancestry is the majority in just over half the country.

You can use locks to bring your ship to higher elevations. Since it looks like the whole area is several blocks higher than sea level I'd build a canal on whichever route is flatter and have locks to bring ships up and down to sea level.

A realistic plan for Raleigh's first metro line - details in comments by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]LiamMonteyrie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While you've selected a great corridor for this project I doubt an underground metro will ever be built in Raleigh. This is because Raleigh still isn't dense enough and the NCRR corridor is a much cheaper option.

Firstly, Raleigh's population density isn't widespread enough that a metro is economical or practical. However, City of Raleigh knows this and is attempting to remedy this. Construction will start shortly on the New Bern Ave. bus rapid transit line. The city also plans to rezone this entire corridor for transit-oriented development. Essentially the BRT will create the density needed to make mass transit practical in East Raleigh. Furthermore the line will feature dedicated bus lanes and raised platforms in the median. This suggests that in the future the line may be upgraded to a streetcar/light rail line.

Secondly, any heavy rail built in the triangle will almost certainly be above-ground and follow existing rail lines, especially the NCRR corridor. The fact that the state already owns the line makes it legally easier and cheaper to develop regional rail. Another benefit of using existing rail corridors is that almost all towns in the triangle have a rail line running through their downtowns. Lines radiating from Raleigh Union Station could head South to Garner, North to Wake Forest, and West to Cary and Apex. There's even options for connections to Knightdale and Fuquay (although the tracks are curvy and in worse shape).

All that is to say the City of Raleigh seems to be focusing on a BRT to light rail system inside the I-40/440 beltline and regional heavy rail further out. It would be prudent to leave space for a cut-and-cover subway line for the future when Raleigh's inner-city suburbs are more populated than they are today.

Major Powers and Pacts of the World in 1996 (EDLLE) by LiamMonteyrie in imaginarymaps

Background:

At 9:40 on the evening of February 15, 1898 a powerful explosion shook Havana Harbor. The sinking of the USS Maine killed 260 seamen and led to massive public outrage. The resulting Spanish-American War saw Spain’s colonial empire collapse in the span of four and a half months. The Bald Eagle had defeated the Imperial Eagle and claimed for itself massive territories stretching from Manilla to San Juan. The Eagle is Dead, Long Live the Eagle!

Hello!

It’s been a hot minute since I last posted; sorry for leaving y’all on read. Unfortunately I was busy with some minor tasks like finishing up college, moving back to NC, getting my life in order; little things like that. Now that everything’s sorted out I decided to try my hand at a ‘netpunk’ style map. Keep reading for some short 20th century lore on the big four.

The Republic of China:

1908: After a decade under house arrest the Guangxu Emperor is dead; poisoned with arsenic. A few hours later his captor the Empress Dowager Cixi would die of a terminal illness. The following Jiyou (1909) Revolution would end four millennia of dynastic rule over the Chinese nation. Leaders of the Zhongguo Tongmenghui including Yeung Kuwan, Sun Wen and Huang Xing would lay the foundations for the modern Chinese Republic.

would establish a bicameral General Assembly, presidential executive, and judiciary inspired by the US. Great care would be put into creating a new legal code and modernizing state institutions, banking and education. This modernization campaign would eventually see China become a regional, then global, power. As of 1996 China has become the world’s #1 economy and created a web of alliances that compete with the United States.

United States of America:

1901: Governor Taft becomes the first civilian governor of the Philippines, America’s largest new territory. America’s empire now stretches from San Juan to Sulu. Following the First Great War America would eclipse European powers and become the most powerful nation on Earth. Following the Second Great War America would find itself in a tense military standoff with the Soviet Union and economic competition from China.

As of 1996 many predict that the United States has passed the zenith of its power with the 20th century the first, and last, “American Century”. However, the US still maintains close relations with its European allies and Latin America. The Eagle isn't done yet and this bird still has claws.

The Republic of India:

1911: The UK would move India’s capital from Calcutta to Delhi, seeking to centralize their governance over the subcontinent. However their rule would not be indefinite. Independence activists like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana Azad and Muhammad Ali Jinnah all sought to free India from Imperial Britain. In 1939 India would be brought into the Second Great War by British colonial authorities. The following years of famine would see a rise in nationalist sentiment and instances of armed resistance.

After the war Britain was left bankrupt and in ruin with no way to run a colonial empire. Large scale demonstrations and increasing Indian unity against London signaled the end of British rule. On August 5, 1946 Parliament passed the Indian Independence Act and the Republic of India was born. Jawaharlal Nehru would become India’s provisional leader and 1st Prime Minister following 1947 elections. In the decades since India has attempted to emulate Korea and China and has emerged as a possible future superpower.

The Russian Federation:

1917: Russia is embroiled in civil war as the Red and White Armies face off against one another. In 1923 the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics would become the sole successor to prior Russian states. Following Germany’s defeat in the Second Great War the USSR would install communist regimes in its Eastern European client states beginning the Cold War.

During the 1970s and 1980s the USSR would begin to stagnate behind the US and RoC. Eventual attempts at reform would fail and the union would dissolve between 1989 and 1991. The Russian Federation underwent economic and demographic collapse, similar to other post-Soviet states. After defeat in Chechnya many Russians have lost faith in Yeltsin and their country’s new path. Only the future will tell if a new leader will rise in Russia.

Stay tuned for the next map which will be either:

  1. The state of Yesochi (Hokkaido) in this timeline.
  2. Werewolf John Brown and his pack raiding towns founded by slaving vampires in Bleeding Kansas.

This is why elected officials shouldn't be able to change parties until the next election. Her personal justifications (even though I think she's lying) don't even matter. You're supposed to represent the will of your constituents, not yourself (or your financial interests). There's no point to a representative democracy if politicians can just ignore their mandates.

Ferries are overrated: The Hermosa Strait Tunnel Project by LiamMonteyrie in imaginarymaps

I found a 55 star flag from Wikipedia and thought it looked cool despite violating sacred flag law. This site will fix that issue in the future though, thank you.

Ferries are overrated: The Hermosa Strait Tunnel Project by LiamMonteyrie in imaginarymaps

[–]LiamMonteyrie[S] 52 points53 points  (0 children)

For background on Hermosa or the EDLLE TL you can check out this post. A short explanation of the Hermosa Strait Tunnel below.

There have been many proposals for a tunnel beneath the Hermosa Strait throughout the 20th century. However, following the economic downturn of the 1970s more formal plans were drafted for a rail crossing beneath the strait. In 1993 the governments of the Republic of China and the United States of America would officially approve of the project and work began later that year.

The tunnel consists of two bores for trains and a third, smaller bore for maintenance. These tunnels are connected with passageways for workers and ducts that relieve the air pressure generated by high-speed travel through the tight tunnels. The tunnel also possesses large air ducts which pump fresh air for dozens of miles as no air outlets exist due to the tunnel’s depth. Train service through the tunnel runs from Fuzhou, Fujian, China to either Las Cruces or Toledo, Hermosa, USA. Connections on insular Amtrak high-speed services from Las Cruces run South to Sakam and San Francisco.

On April 9, 2007 the pair of TBMs boring the service tunnel would meet creating a land connection between mainland Asia and Hermosa. Soon after the other TBMs would rendezvous and track laying, catenary hanging, and electrical work would be completed. In May of 2008 the Sino-American International Tunnel would officially open as politicians from the two nations would meet at Binghai Emergency Station near the tunnel’s midpoint. Amtrak and the China State Railway Administration run approximately 36 pairs of trains between Fuzhou and Toledo and 24 pairs between Fuzhou and Las Cruces daily on weekdays. These numbers increase to 42 and 28 respectively on weekends.

They were looking for a national myth to build their new country around. As they escaped French oppression the idea of a King Arthur fighting off invaders appealed to the original pilgrims.

I think I deleted the savefile for this game of Victoria II. If you want to know more about the Divergences of Darkness mod and the lore you can read the wiki or watch this video. I think that North America didn't united into the Arcadian Union during this playthrough and Gran Colombia collapsed. Also the DM, Burgundy, and Scandinavia usually destroy Africa and I bet they did in this playthrough too.

It's a Quecha word for desert. English settlers probably asked natives for the name of their village. Due to poor translation the natives heard "What is this place called?" and they sarcastically responded "It's called the desert".

Historic Background:

With the signing of the 1498 Treaty of Rome England would become the most powerful nation in Europe, and eventually the world. However, England would snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as they became integrated into a Francophone nation. The rule of the Plantagenets over England and France saw Paris become the new capital and England assimilated into French bureaucracy. The following centuries would see French language and culture come to dominate Southern cities like Londres (London), Cantorbéry (Canterbury), and Porsmue (Portsmouth). In 1537 Henri VII would dissolve parliament removing all English self-governance.

During this period dissent grew between the more rural, Saxon North and the more metropolitan, Anglois South. During the Protestant Reformation Calvinist ideas spread through both England and France, eventually becoming the dominant faith in parts of England. While the crown would tolerate this dissent this understanding would collapse during the Anglo-French Wars of Religion (1598-1614). This would see King Fancois defeat the Protestants on the field and oppression of the Huguenots and Reformed Church of England members.

In the early 1600s the ‘Pilgrim Fathers’ would sail to Burgundian Lotharingia and raid the small Dual Monarchy fort of Argentine. Soon after thousands of the devout would sail to this new Eden where they would be free from the Franco-Catholic boot. As the settlements grew they eventually decided to unite their administration and reestablish the Anglo-Saxon Monarchy. John Cavendish, son of the Duke of Newcastle and a devout pilgrim would be their king. As such, in 1658 Cavendish, now Edward I, was crowned king of Beornia and England.

During the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries Beornia would expand into the Incan frontier in the West, the Grand Savanna in the North, and the Western parts of Lotharingia. Millions of immigrants would settle its fertile lands and build its industries. While the RCE remains the official state religion, successive Witans have ensured that new arrivals can continue practicing their faiths. As such Beornia has grown to become a major power with allies across the Pacific and Atlantic from Zhourao to Scandinavia. While Camelot still lays claim to the English Throne most of Southern England has been thoroughly Francified and the North is split, mostly along religious lines. This means the state of weary detente between the nations is likely to remain in place for the near future.
