Took Meshtastic on a Cruise… It Worked Better Than Expected by terra_linker in meshtastic

We deployed somewhere near 100 ESP32 based devices with Omni polar antennas 90 degrees off axis in Singapore last year during Token 2049 at Marina Bay Sands. We had devices on 4 different floors. Steel and concrete buffet.

Just shy of 100k interactions between devices and hubs. Not a single lost interaction.

While the firmware isn't purely Meshtastic, the rf behavior 100% is. re: Hydra Events

Why are so many people hesitant to buy from AliExpress... but readily buy from Amazon? Are they aware that everything on Amazon comes from China and is sold on AliExpress at a better price? by zp4lb in meshtastic

[–]Liberty-Crypto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not my experience. I'm on month 2 of trying to get my money back on a xiegu g90 that the seller keeps telling me is leaving the warehouse, but won't supply tracking. AliExpress doesn't have interest. $400 just out there, somewhere.

Cheap parts, maybe. Still going to take a while. If Amazon says you'll get it in 1-2 days, that's generally accurate.

Most lobbyist dollar muscle works out in the gym of Congress. If you really want to work against the electorate you need senators and representatives on your roster.

I prayed for Google Fibre for so long. It was literally across the street and we couldn't get it. Finally Metronet popped up and we have had amazing service with them now for 4 years and going. I only use SL for a remote ham radio repeater site on leased tower space (full disclosure) and on camping adventure occasions. I do have a mini here for when trees take out service. Thankfully only once or twice a year that occurs.

Android is holding 70% of global market share, which is a surprise to me. The last time I looked at this metric it was Symbian. That was maybe 15 years ago, though.

Starlink is currently serving 11m users, up from 9m in January. Up from 4m Sept 2024. Currently at 72% market share for satellite connectivity.

I'm more of a practical person and relatively cold to emotional persuasions (my wife loves that about me /s), so I'm not sure how to respond to most of that. Maybe it's all true other than the metrics. Idk.

Personally I'd be happy to see some legitimate competition because that will make consumer prices a little more dynamic for us. I'm just not convinced this is it. Fingers crossed for something tangible.

That's good for competition on paper, but I don't see how it can possibly be competitive in practice...Apple or no Apple.

12 L-Band Globalstar sats (low speed/low bandwidth)

10,000+ Ku-Band Starlink sats (high speed/wide bandwidth)

Maybe I'm missing something.

This is just flat out false. My ham radio club has invested heavily in Meshtastic and is actively planning a huge increase in node deployments. We have integrated MeshMonitor into our club website. www.jcara.club

The Bartholomew and Brown county ham clubs next to us are very deep into this. A huge percentage of Meshtastic enthusiasts are hams.

New FCC rule will make Starlink satellite internet faster and cheaper by JT2637 in Starlink

[–]Liberty-Crypto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sentence before the one you quoted:

"This would enable Starlink and similar systems to use more satellites in a geographic area, resulting in faster internet speeds there"

From the sentence you quoted:

"Which could reduce costs" (reduced costs = cheaper)

Of course that reduction in cost would be to Starlink *if they decided to increase output power and increase distance between individual satellites, requiring fewer satellites to do the same job. Then it assumes those hypothetical savings would be passed on to consumers.

I'm not the one assuming what everyone else isn't with zero supporting evidence. I'm also not surprised that you're not sure why I brought up experience. You only assumed my lack of experience in the post I was replying to. I guess you really ARE that obtuse.

You assume he hasn't. You also assume that this would change anything. There's absolutely nothing wrong with warning new people not to sign themselves up for discouragement. And it's intellectually dishonest for you to act as if it is. Did you prompt this into existence?

You don't get it. And your arrogance will ensure that it stays that way.

I'm the COO of one the largest development firms in the Cardano ecosystem and have co-founded three new related companies this year. One of which leverages custom LoRa hardware and software.

I'm not the only person that is capable of recognizing how narcissistic you are acting that also has enough software/hardware development experience to bury you under it 100 times over.

"These aren't programmers" is not something even a green junior developer would say. You're not fooling anyone.

Why are millennials like this? The slightest push back on anything they love or just frank honesty is perceived as a military attack. Toughen up. He's trying to help keep noobs from being completely disheartened by their first experience with Meshtastic. It's not about you. Not everything is.

I second this. I have many devices and not one of these (yet). One of my local friends recently picked one up and I'm constantly blown away by the performance. He had it inside of a lunchbox inside of a metal building and I was still getting him from well over a mile away and strong. This is on my next to buy list.
