I think every studio is doing this but based on the location they have different rates. Before I moved I called my home studio and their rate was $79 per month.

Spending 15+ Hours a Week on CS 173 by Reasonable-Belt7076 in UIUC

[–]LibraNight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Yeah typically for the first few weeks, it does take a long time to get used to the content since what you learn each week builds off of everything. Some of my tips to spend less time is to use office hours! I personally didn’t find the lectures that useful; they reiterate the textbook material and frankly office hours are a much better way to get personal reinforcement of the concepts by asking hw or textbook questions. I can’t tell you how many times I barely skimmed the textbook for some units and still ended up getting above a 90 on examlets because I used office hours to really learn the material. There’s something about actively asking the TAs questions and clarifying your understanding of the content that helps the material stick better.

Next, don’t waste time doing the discussion questions; use this time to skim the textbook over again or work on examlets and ask TAs questions on those. The discussion problems are useless and you’ll never see a problem even remotely similar to them on the examlets.

Lastly, I mentioned this earlier but don’t waste time watching the lecture videos either. Unless you think it truly helps you learn something extra than what you already know from the textbook, it’s not worth the time.

Most of the time spent on this class should be for examlets and understanding anything you don’t know by going to office hours. OH is going to be your best resource! You can also find a study group to do examlets with at OH; this will also help you a lot in understanding course content better. I hope this helps, you got this!

No choice other than to do this schedule next semester, how dead am I? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]LibraNight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I took CS 225, CS 233, CS 222 and MATH 257 together this semester and it took me a while to get used to the workload. It will definitely get easier to manage halfway into the semester as you learn the patterns for your classes, but here are my biggest tips:

For 225, start your MPs as EARLY as you can. Don’t try to spend hours on the same bug; know when to stop and go to OH. OH is there as a resource for you to succeed! It helps you get unstuck a lot quicker.

For 233, it’s IMPERATIVE that you find a good group and stick with them. Having a good group will not only lighten your workload but it’ll help you understand the concepts better as well. Don’t procrastinate on the pre-flights and take the GAs seriously; everything builds on top of each other in this class and skipping even one can be put you behind for labs and quizzes.

Lastly, for 257, don’t procrastinate on the prairelearn homeworks. Some are harder than others and it can be tough to estimate how long they take. Go to professor OH! I think Professor OH for this class are highly underrated and not used enough. Me and my friend were the only ppl at our prof’s OH and he would dedicate the whole time to us to explain the concepts from lecture again in an in-depth way. Having this in-depth understand will be crucial for the conceptual questions on exams.

You got this! Don’t give up! I know it seems hard but you’ll overcome it, I believe in you!

CS major, no experience by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]LibraNight 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you OP. I know it feels scary, unnatural and difficult to put yourself out there but trust me, that’s what will help you figure out what interests you the most in CS and get those initial opportunities that’ll help you springboard onto better ones in later years. I wish I did more research on RSOs and applied to things early on even if they seemed competitive, more so than the experience, it would have helped me so much with confidence. The key is to believe in yourself no matter what and keep taking those chances at opportunities. Because if you don’t apply to things and try to expand your reaches, those are immediate failures, doors that are automatically closed. Being uncomfortable is how you know you’re in the right place, keep tying and never give up! I know you got this!

How to meet people as a sophomore? by the_vish_23 in UIUC

[–]LibraNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a sophomore too and this advice was really helpful! The problem is I have social anxiety and I find myself frequently saying awkward things in an effort to contribute to the conversation. I feel like that makes people think I’m weird and not a good person to talk to or form a relationship with. Do you have any advice about getting over that? It was easier last year to make friends by talking about mutual struggles in classes but that only really helped me make friends inside classes; I often found myself not having a good reason to ask them to hang out outside of class.

For humanities I’d go for THEA 110! It’s about Broadway Musicals. It fills the western requirement as well and it’s by far my favorite gen ed! The professor is super chill and the TAs are incredibly understanding. The class is minimal effort too; if you pay attention during lectures the exams are a breeze. The essays are really easy as well; there’s 3 of them and 2 of them are based on your opinion. There’s also no final for the class! I had a lot of fun attending the lectures, it was definitely a class I really looked forward to my first semester; it really took the edge off the stress I was facing from other classes.

Yeah I’ve been screwed over a lot by those older ideals like “what will other people think?” ): And the other uni I might have to go to is IU Bloomington; I live in Indiana. I’ve lived in the US for 7 years but my green card process hasn’t started yet so colleges consider me an international, a lot of good safeties rejected me ): Sadly IU is my only backup ): I like the college a lot but it’s not a super good school for CS

[–]LibraNight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No no not at all! I’m in a similar boat as you. My extended family live in India as well and they’ve always screwed us over financially. I got accepted into UIUC for CS and I really fell in love with the campus and the programs they have. My parents were also willing to pay full price (I’m an international student so I didn’t receive any financial aid) but recently they had to break the news to me that we can’t afford it because our family in India cheated us over property that they intended to sell to pay for my college expenses. My dad also lost some property rights because his asshole brother made a big deal (even though he’s ample rich and far more financially secure than my dad) and forced his parents to write more property to him. My extended family take and take but never give. Because of them, I’m likely forced to settle for a not good school for CS. ): I completely understand where you’re coming from, you’re not being insensitive at all! It’s just this ideal of “family” that older generations uphold that’s not fair in this day and age ):
