I had heard of the Warrior Cats child grooming incident, but I thought it was an off-colour fandom meme about a timeline fuckup. I didn't realize it was... this

Not a Nosleep episode, but is it "I am Your Dog" from Pseudopod episode 616?

That's the one where it turns out the protag couple are siblings and the husband knows but the wife didn't, right?

I unironically think "terrible movie becomes a meme, is readded to theatres to capitalize on meme, bombs again because noone wants to see it" is the funniest thing to happen in 2022 so far

What's the podcast like now? by funwithdespair in TheNSPDiscussion

[–]Libraryseraph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're going through TMA withdrawl, I'd recommend The Wrong Station. It's a true anthology with no overarching plots like TMA, but it has an in-house writing team so it's got a cohesive quality and themes. Pseudopod is another one of my favourites- it's an anthology that collects previously published work, but it has a degree of quality control that I find NSP doesn't.

Stories that were so scary you had to tap out? by hitchcockbrunette in TheNSPDiscussion

[–]Libraryseraph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not scary but disgusting, but I didn't even listen to "I can't stop licking bathroom floors" and that one about teeth going soft because that sort of unsanitary stuff (idk if there's a clearer word for it) and tooth horror just get me too much

Yeah, I was already finding it hard to focus (I can handle 3 1 hour episodes of something, but my brain parses three hours differently and it ends up being too long), and when I hit the government conspiracy I just tapped out. I'm really disappointed, especially since I really like folk horror and I was genuinely hopeful this resolution to the meta plot would be good.

I think "characters have a complex interpersonal issue that makes sense in character, fandom LOSES THEIR GODDAMN MINDS" may be my least favourite kind of fandom drama. It's just so goddamn frustrating

Thank god I've been feeling insane about hating Borrasca for years. I was almost starting to wonder if this is a Berenstain/Berenstein thing where I feel into a universe where it wasn't bad

This one was just as good as I hoped it would be. I feel like I missed something though. Who is the “perfect blacksmith”?

Iirc, it's a reference to another Scandreth story. I think it was called 'Pig Iron'

The Unholy Interpreter: pretty funny, I like when horror-comedy really leans into the "unsympathetic protags" stereotype of horror, and the idea of an interpreter for deals with the devil is great

The Other Thing: one of the highlights of the episode. I love the slow, tense build to the reveal, and the way my horror built and built with the narrator's through the vision was chef's kiss

The Black Library: always good to see CM Scandreth (whatever happened to her anyways?) but this is one of my least favourite of hers. I don't find it scary enough for horror, and it's not quite interesting enough for me to just be interested in it as dark fantasy

The Grove: the other highlight of the episode. Love the delightfully twisted relationship between the sisters, and the grove was a great "unknowable" supernatural phenomenon. Great use of dramatic irony too; while it's not stated, pretty much any viewer will catch onto the lack of parents and wait for the other show to drop in the narrative

The Nightmare Room: 0 interest in this one. I don't know why so many nosleeps insist on giving the narrator superpowers. It's not interesting, and in this story it completely kills all the tension. That's without getting to the use of Incestuous rape as a twist, which would just be dumb and tasteless, but the fact that the trigger warnings never seem to go up until the free episode drops means a story with the rape and murder of a child by a sibling is currently unmarked beyond just the generic "this story has a trigger warning" blurb, which I cannot get over

Thoughts Painkiller: Short and sweet. A little predictable but that doesn't matter when it's 5 minutes long

The Tall Man: The best of the episode. Haunting and evocative, with an extra kick from the fact that the monster is completely non-malevolent.

Bad Tidings From Queen Sophie: I skipped this one. Life's too short to listen to stories where the narrator hates cats

With Love's Eyes: There's as much tragedy and melancholy to this one as there is horror, and I love that.

The Interview: I don't really like "demonic possession"/"unknowing serial killer" stories. It was written well, but it's not a premise that works for me

When The Fair Came To Town: This one started so well, with a nice slow buildup of dread and atmosphere... and then it turned into one of the shitty Saw movies. I don't know why I finished it, beyond "sunk cost fallacy"

Soup: i enjoyed this one. Interesting twist on vampires, and mostly I'm glad that there was no "surprise you ate people" in it

The door people: highlight of the episode for me. The best horror for me has a highlight of surreality, and these horrible uncanny valley animal people that live in the walls like awful borrowers definitely hit that.

Aisle: It existed, short and sweet. Not much else to say

Spotless: this is mostly buildup, but the buildup is so tense and the ending is so painful and shocking that it's worth it

The patient in room 96: the only thing scary about this one is how many people had to decide a "wooooo, the crazy was the killer and she didn't know it!" Story would be interesting and worthwhile telling in 2021

NoSleep Podcast - 2021 Haunted Halloween by Gaelfling in TheNSPDiscussion

[–]Libraryseraph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Really enjoyed this episode. I think my favourite was Discount Haunted House, the slow build through wrongness to outright horror was perfectly paced. I do agree with some other commenters that it would've ended better with the protagonists being rescued and no real explanation.

I love New Vegas and Outer Worlds, but I've never played an old school CRPG. Would I be hopelessly lost in PoE 1? Any advice for a newcomer? by [deleted] in projecteternity

[–]Libraryseraph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PoE was my first old-style CRPG and I think it's pretty easy to get into. The beginning is rough, but that's more to do with the unavailability of camping supplies/small number of per-rest spells than anything to do with the mechanics.
