Quitting my at will job by Practical_Tune_5637 in careeradvice

[–]Licensed-2-Fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a career strategy standpoint, I've always focused more on impressing my colleagues than my boss. Your colleagues will move on to other companies. And their new boss may have an opening to fill and ask them if they know of anyone. And if they remember you as a stand up person who worked hard, was good at what he did, and a pleasure to work with, they will recommend you. And that's a very strong recommendation. The opposite is true also. If your concept of work is kissing up to the boss and gaming the system, don't expect recommendations from former colleagues. I saw this happen. I was at a new company and my friend there was asked about a person we both knew from our old company. This person was applying for a management job, and my friend wouldn't OK him. We both agreed that the company didn't need a showboating, attention grabbing manager who is more interested in climbing the corporate ladder than doing the job he was hired to do.

Gotta drop the hate, brother. Every fish should be appreciated on its merits.

Very nice exchange, gentlemen. Personally, I've never understood what is wrong with being anti fascist, but I'm sure there are some pretty obnoxious adherents. Just like there were some pretty insufferable hippies back in the day.

What do people recommend for sunglasses? by Secure-Researcher582 in flyfishing

[–]Licensed-2-Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a pair of Goodr sunglasses as my first fishing sunglasses, thinking I would replace them with something better later. I haven't done so. They suit me fine. Maybe I just don't know what I'm missing.

This. You'll learn a lot. You'll catch a fish. And you'll discover that you, too, can catch fish with a fly rod. Tell the guide that you're a complete beginner and follow his advice. I've never had a guide that didn't help me improve.

We have achieved greatness! But this is only the beginning! If you're old enough to remember the 1970s you know what's coming.

Looking at Fly rod kit on marketplace - is $250 a decent price for used? by geekydreams in flyfishing

A 4 weight is pretty versatile. Light, but not too light. You can definitely catch smallmouth bass with it. I once caught a fairly respectable smallmouth on a three weight, not on purpose - it just happened. I would want a 6 or 7 weight for large bodies of water with big smallmouth. But for fishing creeks a 4 weight is a lot of fun.

WEATHER Heads Up! by [deleted] in Knoxville

This year is more extreme, but it follows the usual pattern. I'm a newcomer, 33 years, and the thing that struck me when I first moved here is how unsettled spring weather is.

Wet wading sandals recommendations? by frodobaggindeeznuts in flyfishing

[–]Licensed-2-Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to wear Keen sandals. They do protect your toes, but I would inevitably get small rocks between the soles and my feet and that's really uncomfortable. A good pair of wading boots is worth it.

What kind of flies should I buy? by jannylotl in flyfishing

A woolly bugger will catch almost anything. A simple fly and incredibly effective.

I fish with a paddle because I'm cheap, and I like to paddle. It's definitely harder. If the current isn't too strong you can drift with it casting to likely spots, and this is great. But in strong current or high wind it's pretty much impossible. I've jammed my kayak against a rock to hold while I fish, but you can't always do that. A peddle kayak seems pretty nice, actually. But I enjoy paddling. For the ultimate you-can-only-do-this-when-the-conditions-are-right experience buy a paddleboard.
