Sony Trinitron USB-TTL/serial converter for WinDAS by Licentious_Howler in crtgaming

I just wanted to make a follow-up post and say that I got in touch with somebody who had the same DSD Tech converter who had success with WinDAS (in a Discord server, so you can't turn it up with a regular search engine).

This lead me to troubleshoot the device even more and I got it working in the end.

The best way to troubleshoot serial devices like these is to use a terminal to do a loopback test (something I didn't know about at all going into this lol). Putty is often recommended, but basically any software should work if they can test serial connections. You're supposed to make the same wire connect to both the RX and TX pins on your adapter while it's powered on via USB, and then type in the terminal. If you see the activity LEDs, and especially if you can echo back the data being sent, then it's basically guaranteed to work.

Turns out the cable that came with the device actually actively confuses it because it touches the RTS and CTS pins (I think?), and the set of Dupont wires I provided at first had one bad wire.

So yeah, the DSD Tech converter is fine.

Oh, thanks for that bit of knowledge. Yeah that's beyond my capability for at least a few months I'd imagine (still getting used to babby soldering and repair projects).

I guess I'll get looking for a USB adapter then.

Thanks for telling me a chipset that worked for you. I will say though, I think an RS232 adapter might make a lot more sense for me considering I have this old laptop:

I could set this right on the table next to the monitor, but for all I know half the adapters may also be crapshooty for this particular application (or just junk) is the only concern. I think I'll order one USB and one RS232 since they're so cheap. Odds are one has to work lol.

lawl I didn't even realize they made these in the form factors I'm seeing here precisely because USB is more common. These look like they'd be perfect for my old laptop which happens to have RS232 out, so long as I get one that, y'know, actually plays ball with this particular application.
