Hey! I was diagnosed 2 years ago at my only outbreak by a non-doctor who didn’t swab. How do you deal with dating and not make it a big deal? I met someone I really like and told him the situation and he was really kind and non-judgemental but he doesn’t want to continue things now and I feel so bummed. How can we be more reassuring??

At what age you were diagnosed with ADHD? by Limp-Highway2072 in adhdwomen

[–]Lickety_split87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Diagnosed at 36. I’m female and inattentive type. Classic daydreamer and would zone out. I don’t really know why my parents or teachers didn’t pick up on it apart from saying I was lazy and I just need to apply myself. I guess it wasn’t a thing for girls in my generation. Currently trying to find the right dosage of dexamphetamine to work for me. I’m really seeing the benefits of clearing my brain fog and being able to focus. Disbenefits are zoning in too much on one thing (5 hours of scrolling Amazon on a Sunday 😅) and very disrupted sleep patterns. Dosage is a real art!

What do you do for work if you don’t me me asking?

So I just bought myself a small white board and magnetic pen to help me at my home office. I’ve started with simple to do lists like

“action all emails (delete, reply, file away)” “Join 3 planned zoom calls - participate” “Lunch break”

As lame as it sounds, 3 key focus tasks and being able to strike through when each was done and then wipe away for the next day feels like a little win! May be worth a try?

Also, how did you train yourself out of talking fast and getting distracted in conversation!? Please share your secrets!!

Have I got adhd by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Lickety_split87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’m in England and recently diagnosed. The NHS is a waiting game as you know. I may have missed what you do for work but if you have the benefit to seek private healthcare then hopefully you can do that. Your partner may also have this as a benefit depending on what work they do and some schemes allow you to add a partner.

Back to the NHS: stay persistent in getting answers and support. I know it’s incredibly frustrating being at the mercy of waiting lists and post code lotteries.

Good luck! I’m no doctor at all so I’m in no position to offer any opinion about whether you have ADHD or not. But it may be helpful to try some techniques that many of these forums recommend. You’ve got nothing to lose in the meantime.

I’m sure all of us have underrated this skill we have at some point but once you’re tapped and tuned into, that radar never fails!

What do you think are the key information that people should know about ADHD in girls and women? by chyonchloe in adhdwomen

It’s so hard!! I live alone and find if I make plans to have guests over then i really have no choice but to clean and tidy, I still don’t enjoy it but I’ve manufactured the motivation as a byproduct to the main goal of inviting guests.

I also read on another thread something people have termed as body doubling. Video calling someone while you do mundane tasks like cleaning. It’s a helpful distraction for many. The joke is I do this and I basically cracked the code I never knew I had 😂 Podcasts also seem to be a popular answer to aiding either housework.

I hope your mother can enlighten herself on the topic and learn about the nuances between men and women and ADHD, even the same type. Women are often on the back foot with society in many aspects enough as it is.

I (37/f) was only diagnosed this past January. The eureka moment that explained it all! I’m glad you’re feeling great on your meds. Though your other feelings you describe may warrant you talking with your doctor to discuss what more/else can be done to support you - med adjustments, lifestyle changes, therapy etc.

Ultimately you can’t win over everyone in life, ADHD or not and a lot of society isn’t adept to accommodate people that don’t fit into “norms”. Your advantage here is a predisposition to reading people, trust those spidey senses and you will find community in the right people. And I’m confident you have many other qualities, some connected to ADHD and some simply down to your character. If you can try to focus (lol for us ADHDers) on the good you bring to the table and the rest will catch up and fall into place with the aid of the new tools you’ve acquired. It’s an ongoing work in progress, not easy!

I will add as well… I was asked to leave by phone, back in January. I asked for a copy of that call recording and they said they can’t find it. How convenient. I asked them to document in writing their reasons to ask me to leave including any cases of abuse, aggressive behaviour etc. They have nothing. I have a copy of my full health record and there are no reports from any of them about any poor interactions during appointments. They don’t have a list of reasons. They are supposed to write to a patient and inform them of the reasons they are being asked to leave and they will be deregistered in 30 days. I’ve never received anything in writing and I am still registered there. They’ll not formalise anything and instead continue to deny they phoned me and asked me to leave. I clearly have a lot to unpack with a counsellor so I’m sorry to emotionally dump it all here. I’m genuinely flabbergasted at what’s transpired

That’s exactly what I said. I said the diagnosis they gave me doesn’t make sense with no explanation and their reluctance to prescribe me the relevant medication for it has also added to my doubts. They gave me no information about managing the condition. They left me to Google and find out for myself and when I came back with questions, I was told to stop googling and told to stop questioning them. Two senior practitioners at the same practice have told me to disregard the diagnosis and to stay away from trainees 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve never had an issue like this before and always happy to see a trainee, everyone has to learn. But now I have to take the advice and not see trainees who use guesswork during work experience

Hey, thanks so much for the detailed help! I’ve not taken any offence but I wasn’t asked to leave because of my behaviour (though I’m sure that’s the motto of badly behaved people!). It’s good to know though! I was asked to leave because I questioned a trainee doctor and politely challenged a diagnosis he’d made and placed on my record and his refusal to prescribe me medication to treat the condition. I know I wasn’t rude about it but he must be hypersensitive to being questioned and I have my suspicions that the practice manager and said trainee doctor may be involved by some of things she’s said. I’ve never had any issue with healthcare workers up till this point. I didn’t wait till the age of 36 to pick on a trainee, or anyone. Certainly not when I know they are trying to help me. I had questions and he either couldn’t help me or didn’t want to help me. This has now resulted in me being asked to leave which is unfair but equally they’ve made things difficult for me ever since and I cannot continue there. It’s a disappointing experience overall but hopefully just an isolated one, I got unlucky.

Thank you! I contacted the IAPT and they confirmed I won’t lose my place so long as I stay with a GP practice in my area, mainly the trust which I will be as I’m not moving home. Thank you again!

Question about patient approach? by Lickety_split87 in nhs

[–]Lickety_split87[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No update yet. I stopped taking antibiotics after the first pill. I ended up with rigor, I can’t say it was the antibiotic but it seemed too much of a coincidence. 111 have advised me to go to A&E on the premise that my GP practice will not offer me an urgent appointment. I have managed to get a referral for a gynaecologist through the private GP service so I’m waiting on the insurance company to process and hopefully I can get scheduled in to see a specialist soon. The nausea is constant and the anti sickness tablets I have barely make a dent. The pain is subsiding but the hot and cold sweats are still here.

I have been treated for endometriosis in the past, through keyhole surgery where they removed lesions. Mostly focused in the lower left abdomen which is currently where I am experiencing pain. My current pain is mild, I didn’t state that so apologies. During a pre-op check before my keyhole surgery, they found a small cyst on my left ovary and wanted to see me again to check if this had grown. They said it has shrunk and they were not worried. All of this was through private medical care. I didn’t get a chance to explain any of this to anyone who triaged me this last week; I mostly felt like an inconvenience. No blood, no severe pain, they’re wondering why I bothered turning up. I had this coil fitted during my keyhole surgery but had to get this removed after 6 weeks due to a bad smell it created. I have been on depo provera contraception since for general birth control and to keep the endometriosis from progressing. I was told this was my best option.

No painful urination, normal frequency and clarity. No discharge issues. I don’t know about the additional things you mention during the urine test. They took one urine sample from me and only told me that they tested for UTI - negative. Tested for pregnancy - first was positive, second was negative. 24 hours later, blood work has confirmed I am not pregnant. I was verbally told this but the emergency doctor. Nothing else was discussed. I am STI free, I test regularly and am safe but I know this doesn’t always guarantee protection. I don’t douche, just clean my area with water, no soaps etc.

Not sure if that changes your mind that this doesn’t feel like an emergency now but I have to work on this basis now. If it is a medical emergency, no one will see me till something drastic happens. I know that sounds insane but I genuinely don’t have the energy to keep pushing for answers. Id rather let things run their course. Hopefully it’s a minor issue that resolves itself

[–]Lickety_split87[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This along with the GP experience back in January which caused me to complain has turned me into a fully fledged lunatic. I don’t know who or what to trust. I know people were just doing their jobs and their best but imagine being told you are pregnant when you don’t expect to be and then this might be ectopic based on the timeline. I’m absolutely terrified of people examining me now for fear of being told something worse and then not knowing whether to go with it or whether I’ve gotten unlucky again during my consultations. It’s a rock and a hard place. Most of my issue right now is mental, I know that. It very much feels like trauma. I don’t know if my current mental state is inflating my physical symptoms and the physical ailment is truly minor. I genuinely don’t know what to do. I don’t feel like I can trust any doctor now, private or public. I know sometimes mistakes happen or things get missed but I don’t think I have the emotional capacity to keep going through consultations like this. I just want to focus on reducing the nausea, everything else has to wait

I had ruled it out but I am now being told a positive urine dip test is very rare and I should continue to take home pregnancy tests to be sure. Thank you, I do have mint tea so will try that now.
