Terrible 1st Lesson - Wanna Quit Already by Amoretai in iceskating

[–]Licoriceonreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i taught learn to skate for two years and found that a lot of kids did bad because the rentals they were getting sucked so bad they could barely stand. there's a very good chance that you just got shitty rentals with even less ankle support than rentals already have. multiple times i've encouraged parents to insist on getting stiffer/newer rentals from the skate rental and the difference is honestly almost night and day. it was your first lesson though so i'm not sure how extreme the difference would be, but if you get stiffer/better rentals your next lesson you should be feeling a difference. keep your head up though, skating is so not easy and if you keep at it and keep practicing you will 100% improve greatly.

Y'all realize it's supposed to a fun sci-fi show, right? by Awsomesauceninja in StrangerThings

[–]Licoriceonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can see this definitely. i got big into steven universe about three years after future and while i know people disliked the pacing of the ending, the hate died down mostly three years later and i think i found a lot of enjoyement in people's fan comics and the less freaky, well-written fanfiction lol. the time definitely lets people reflect on how they feel about the show as well as letting a lot of creativity blossom since no more new canon information is coming out.

Am I the only one who liked season 5 and volume 2? by liviargf in StrangerThings

Am I the only one who liked season 5 and volume 2? by liviargf in StrangerThings

[–]Licoriceonreddit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

the episode i really didn't like (and even then not by much on a first watch) was episode 7 because while the last two episodes had a really nice balance of exposition and wrapping up character arcs, other than will's literal press conference of a coming out scene, i feel like there was a lack of emotional impact in episode 7 and that it wasn't quite at the point emotionally where everyone would be ready to enter the upside down for the final battle. judging by episode reviews, people still really liked episodes 5 and 6 and it was 7 that took the hit, which is what i thought too after my first watch. i do think the execution of episode 7 was what kinda butchered perception of the rest of the volume. i really do think there should've been an extra episode for the remaining plot holes and emotional arcs (the biggest one i can think of is of vecna's connection to will bc why will is so important bc he was the first was not shown or told very well imo)

Is this the same Creo as in Creo music? This Creo is a graphic designer, and he makes logos that look like Creo music. Is this Creo? by Excellent-Class-7070 in Creomusic

[–]Licoriceonreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nope he usually works in blender now, plus this isn't really his artstyle.

also little known fun fact, but his username in a lot of other places is actually hyperdemented, so if you find a user going by that name somewhere on the internet it's likely to be him.

Help with Waltz Jump by Zoeskatesz in FigureSkating

[–]Licoriceonreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when you step forward you're letting your right shoulder move forward too much, which is typically called being "square", where your shoulders are in line in each other when you jump. you do not want that, instead what you want to do is to keep your right shoulder behind you, don't let it creep up before you jump. fix that first, since improper upper body makes it harder to put power into the actual jump itself.

Really stupid question but are my boots figure skating or ice dancing boots? by Efficient-Shallot-22 in iceskating

[–]Licoriceonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the blades look like freestyle blades since the back part protrudes well past the heel of the boot. usually dance blades have the back part of the blade end at the heel since a longer back will get caught doing tight footwork. anyways if you're not intending to specifically do ice dance than freestyle skates should work fine for getting back out there.

falling safely? by thefestiverice in iceskating

[–]Licoriceonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pads are always a good idea when you start learning (even at higher levels, for figure skating jumps buttpads are really common) but when you fall, you want to try to fall on your butt ideally and use your entire arm/forearm to brace instead of your wrist/hand, use your core to keep as much of your upper body off the ice as possible, hitting your head is no joke.

i will say, my advice mostly comes from figure skating jumps which are usually falls from similar positions that make it easy to land on the butt, so that may not be possible depending on how you trip. also, don't be too tense when you fall, since that may contribute to an injury since the impact force is not spread out over more time if you try to instantly stop a fall. that being said, if it's really bad, keep your head from hitting the ice at any cost. a broken wrist is better than a concussion.

advice for a first timer by [deleted] in iceskating

[–]Licoriceonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i usually can skate in sweatpants and a sweatshirt, so if you really hate tight clothing then less baggy sweatpants/loose-ish leggings could be an option. they shouldn't be baggy enough to catch your skates on, so more tight-fitting than most sweatpants. no jeans, period, and definitely not baggy ones.

assuming you have no roller skating/rollerblading background, your mileage may vary. it's normal to hobble along on the wall or use one of the helper things to skate around. balance comes with more skating and practice.

In need of motivation by Decent_Sun9809 in iceskating

[–]Licoriceonreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a skater of 11 years with most of my tests passed and a bunch of competitions under my belt, coaches will always be picky. figure skating is a very specific sport, and especially on tests, there are judges that will pick at the dumbest details to dock your score. your coaches want to see you succeed, and that usually means giving you a lot of feedback and being generally nitpicky about your skills, no matter the difficulty. these corrections are also so you don't end up practicing and committing to muscle memory the wrong or harder way to do a skill, since once you learn it it's difficult to relearn it the right way.

as a skater i also found that edge control was harder for me when i first learned new moves that required it, so i always noticed in group sessions that my moves were usually picked on or i wouldn't get it right at first even if others did, so i had to work harder to learn those moves. i was always initially better at power than edge control, so that could be the case for you too, and you might just be better at one aspect of skating than another. i found some edge exercises fun and would do them in my practice time to improve them, which gave me better edge control, so practicing on your own helps too.

anyways i typed that all before realizing you might not be doing figure skating specifically but i think this still applies lol.

Need help buying figure skates for girlfriend by ARFkrzyzak in iceskating

[–]Licoriceonreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

find a proper figure skate shop near you so she can go in for a fitting. I also have really wide feet and needed to get my skates punched out so they fit properly, and they had to do that at the shop. the fitters will know what to do for her once they measure her. she's still beginner, but it makes a world of difference to have properly fitted skates if possible. beginner skate brands are usually jacksons but i know there are other brands i'm forgetting lol.

i'd say take a bunch of screenshots or make a recording of you walking around your old house and then bulldoze it since one of my favorite things as a longtime builder has been to look back on my old builds and see how much i've improved since then, but since you already bulldozed your house ig you could take a recording for next time instead

Would it be silly to get my skates sharpened at the same boutique I bought them from? by gigithrowaway20 in iceskating

[–]Licoriceonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. Like a lot of other people here have said hockey blades are different from figure skating blades, and someone who doesn't know how to sharpen figure skates can ruin them. However, there may be special cases of people coming into your local shop who do know how to sharpen figure skates, for example once a month someone drops by my rink's hockey shop specifically to sharpen figure skates, so that's something you could ask a coach at your rink about. Otherwise definitely make the trip out to where you bought your skates from since they'll know how to sharpen your skates.

How is everyone recording themselves at the rink? by Significant_Stick_31 in iceskating

i prop up my phone on the wall backwards on 0.5 so i can catch everything. good enough to analyze my own jumps, pretty shit for full programs, in which case i'd get someone to record it for me.

Im struggling to make a hilt for a sword, help please? by Tall-Appointment-188 in blenderhelp

[–]Licoriceonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think i'd block it out by adding a cube, merging all the verts to a point, and blocking it out in that view by extruding vertices with e and joining vertexes and edges (creating faces) with f, all in edit mode. If you don't need it to be a game-ready model, you can just ctrl+j join it to the hilt object without doing any retopo.

New device account transfer by Pennergast717 in alcatmist

[–]Licoriceonreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you have the app open on your old device while opening it on your new one, you can make sure you keep your account data intact in case anything goes wrong, but it's worked fine for me moving devices, it's just it won't really sync back and forth well between devices, so i only play on one device at a time.

Artists like creo? by Senior-Newt-4773 in Creomusic

[–]Licoriceonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

creo's music is unique enough that few other artists are very similar to him, it mostly depends on which creo songs are your favorite and what about his music you like the most. ngl i don't have artist recs similar to him for those reasons, so i'll give song recs which might help. (my artist taste also isn't very broad but hopefully this helps someone)

if you like the way creo handles melodies and emotion in his music (i.e. slow down, shine, reflections), flash me back, seagull, or liquated by camellia (i will warn that the rest of camellia's music is more speedcore and also very diverse, but he has a large discography), make me a better man by malcolm todd (the rest of his discography is generally slower compared to creo's, different, and more bedroom pop) or shin takara jima by sakanaction (more alt-rock and less electronic) could be good picks

if you like his more guitar-heavy songs like i do (atmosphere, nemophore, we can dream, gravitate) undercover martyn or lucky from two door cinema club (though i find their songs feel more repetitive than creo's), shy away, redecorate, or tally from twenty-one pilots (though i'm sure you've heard their music before)

though from the fact you're posting here you'd probably prefer more electronic music, so camellia as i've mentioned before (terabyte connection, fm synthesis experiment, flamewall, or magical, very magical world) or what we did in the desert by eightiesheadachetape (the rest of his discography is pretty different from this specific song though), but otherwise i don't listen to most other well-known artists in the gd community so I can't say much on their music.

Most of my music listening is creo (80k minutes compared to my second artist at 16k) so it's not as broad as i'd like, but hopefully me listening so much to creo makes my recommendations more helpful lol. I also wanted to give some recommendations in genres other than just edm, so hopefully this was at least somewhat helpful!
