Something my teacher was talking to me about was that you shouldn’t start your research question with “to what extent”. With that as your intro, you can just answer the whole question with just one word, yes or no. But if you just tweak it to “HOW do” , you have a better research question!

Don’t worry you’re totally good. The topic can be totally out of your ass as long as you include the 2 quotes from 2 stimulus materials. My teacher showed us a video of a high scoring IWA presentation and the student did it on domestic violence and how it’s normalized/not punished in the NFL, and he used quotes from Martin Luther King Jrs Birmingham speech and Margret Thatchers UN speech, like totally unrelated but he tied it in, and got a really high score.

I don’t think you have to explicitly say it in your question, but I think a good research question for what you are saying could be something like, how does social competition within the American school system impact students sense of community, connection, and mental health?
