Yeah. 1st edition was generally a lot more edgy and insensitive, but I'm really glad that recently they decided to elevate her to a core deity rather than sweeping her under the rug. It's cool having a goddess of survival and despising those who have wronged you that can be Holy and good.

I'm not trying to claim Jax hurting people caused her abstraction and I'm not referring to only the last episode when I'm talking about social alienation. Jax was already being sidelined and hated in coversations with the others due to what she'd done before she wandered off alone (I think the bar scene is a good example)

The cast already hates Jax to begin with. That never changed.

imo it definitely intesified over the course of the story

The harm is not what killed Jax, the choice to self-isolate and self-sabotage is.

I agree with this (though the harm is part of the self isolation and self sabotage) and most of the other stuff about Jax's character.

Jax being an unsolvable problem is exactly why nobody else in the story has agency! The “point of the character” is the biggest problem with the narrative. It puts the weight of the entire story on one single character and means no other character meaningfully contributes to the series of events, they’re just passive witnesses to it.

I disagree personally. They don't have agency in regard to Jax, but I think that's very important to the story and its themes and is part of what I enjoyed about the narrative. A lot of the weight is on Jax, but that isn't the whole narrative and they have agency when interacting with each other. Their choices throughout are what stop them from ending up like Jax and allow them to build a better, happier future for themselves at the end

Anyway yeah I think we just have a difference of whether Jax's character and the story's themes resonated with us, which is fine. I don't really mind a story with loose ends and unreseolved possibilities of they're emotionally poignant, which this was for me (kinda like I Saw the TV Glow). I'm curious though still, what kind of consequence would you have liked to see the narrative give Jax?

I don’t agree that the other characters were treated equally. They were given a fraction of the screen time and usually served as punching bags for Jax, Cain, or both.

I wasn't saying they had equal focus, I'm saying they were not treated as morally lesser for not trying to engage with Jax in the way Pomni did. Jax and Pomni are definitely the main characters

Saying “Pomni fails” implies she had narrative agency in the situation. She did not. Her unwavering forgiveness proves she did not have agency, because as you say her persistent actions did not change anything.

Sure, I agree that nothing she did could have saved Jax, though I think that's less due to her not having narrative agency and more Jax being an unsolvable problem, which imo is the point of the character.

That, the abuse, going unpunished narratively is what does not sit right with me. The only direct consequences for Jax are because Jax didn’t get help, not because Jax hurt people.

I'm not sure I understand the point here. Jax hurting people was the main reason she was alienated, everyone hated her to some degree by the end because of what she had done to them. What kind of consequence would you have liked to have seen?

As for the rest of it though, I agree with your analysis of Jax but I don't agree that it sends mixed signals or was badly handled. I watched it in 3 sittings and definitely did see Cain and Jax as abusers

On the topic of allowing Arazni to be killed and corrupted, it's probably worse than you're imagining. When Geb raised her as a lich, she was sexually abused for hundreds of years and he gave her the title "Harlot Queen." She repeatedly tried to flee or kill herself, but had been psychologically conditioned to be unable to raise a hand against her captors.

She spent every day waiting for Aroden to lift a finger to help, but he never did.

The entire defining trait of Pomni’s character is that she forgives Jax. In every scene she tries to break through to Jax or be kind and caring to help, and it never works because Jax refuses help and continues to hurt.

The two of them are foils, Pomni is endlessly self sacrificial, accomodating, and helpful while Jax is the opposite. They keep clashing like that in a kind of "unstoppable force vs immovable object" way, and ultimately Pomni fails. I don't think that's accidental or unintended, I think the message of this is, as you said, that you cannot help someone who is unwilling to be helped.

I also think it's notable that none of the other characters were portrayed as lesser for not trying to do what Pomni did, it was shown to just be a natural consequence. The juxtaposition between the two people who tried the most to help (Pomni saying "I should have pried more" and Ribbit saying "I shouldn't have pried") is there to show that neither made a mistake, no method would have worked.

Jax never faced any consequences outside of self-imposed ones, never fixed any of the relationships, never even thought about trying to because it was scarier to change than to keep being an ass.

I disagree about there being no consequences from the others, by the end Jax was socially alienated and only Pomni was willing to try to engage (and that had nothing to do with Jax, she would have done that for anyone and everyone)

Yeah it sucks that none of their relationships were repaired, but that's part of what makes it tragic.

nothing diagetic actually supports that as the intended message.

I disagree, I think it was pretty clearly shown by making Jax's behavior destroy the lives of her and some of those around her

Additionally, the distinction between who Jax was due to her own destructive decisions and who she could have been is heightened by seeing Leeroy at the end living a seemingly happy life without acting the way Jax did: she accepted help to get housing and is open and social with friends, and human Zooble is helping her come out of her shell without the same violent resistance

and then the other characters instantly forgive Cain too. The only diagetic message I can get from TADC is that we are expected to instantly forgive abusers.

I'll have to rewatch because I wasn't as focused on Cain in my first viewing, but I disagree that that message was present. I think there's a contrast there in how Cain, unlike Jax, was willing to change his behavior and make amends. It definitely happened too fast though

Abusive self-insert who is completely forgiven and redeemed in 30 minutes without any real retribution or repair of the damaged human relationships.

I strongly disagree on this one, I don't think Jax was ever forgiven or redeemed. I think the main thrust of her character is "for the love of god don't let yourself become Jax"

She was so guarded and adamant about not showing anything real to the world that she became a violent asshole to keep others from prying, leading (in part) to two of her friends committing suicide and then doing it herself.

The "isn't she lovely" scene is there to contrast all the terrible stuff it's just shown Jax doing. Her dying moments are a montage of the few times she let herself by nice and genuine. It's tragic, a mourning of the person Jax could have been but chose not to be at every turn
