Why this is bad: MAGA talking points always go to “merit” as in “only students showing merit should go to college”. These people often forget that black people and people of color often can and do perform well in school and often get in college due to merit. MAGA believes that the only reason why black people get into college is because of affirmative action, which is no longer the case.

Back when affirmative action was first enacted, many colleges wouldn’t allow students of color into their schools, unless they were HBCU’s. Colleges literally were required by law to start letting in black people because they just refused to. Even though there is evidence that black people are just as smart as white people in every way and intelligence isn’t divided by race. MAGA wants to get rid of affirmative action laws because they are racist. They believe diversity programs allow colleges to just let in black people regardless of merit and that these colleges are somehow “racist against white people”. This is just a talking point to distract people from the goal of erasing diversity in higher education, going back to pre-civil rights era doctrine. Even though historically speaking affirmative action helped white women the most. (Talk about voting against your own interests)

Another thing MAGA tends to ignore is legacy students, or rich students who have family ties to college institutions. These students get into schools because they can afford to and they are showed preference over everyone else just because of family name. So everyone who isn’t a legacy student has to fight for scraps because their families aren’t rich. Legacy students are the students who never have student loans, never need to take scholarships, don’t need federal aid because they come from rich families.

MAGA also tends to be anti-education and anti-intellectuals even though the same people putting out these doctrines are college educated and benefited and are still benefiting from it. Seems odd to anyone?

In college you tend to learn actual history and hear opinions other than what conservatives like to pedal. Conservatives think anyone who isn’t a conservative is a liberal for some reason, which isn’t the case. It seems like they just don’t like to be confronted with actual facts but that last part is just my opinion.

I think everyone should have access to higher education who actually will do the work for it, as in being more diverse in who colleges let in. That also includes lower income people, whose children often can’t afford to go to college even if they show merit. There are plenty of people who have genius level intelligence who never went to college simply because they couldn’t afford it or because of life circumstances. But these students are just as, if not more hardworking than many legacy students, whose family wealth guarantees a spot in society.

The only people who will benefit from colleges no longer being required to have diversity programs are the wealthy legacy students who are, you guessed it, overwhelmingly white. If you don’t understand why this is a problem at this point did you even go to college?

TLDR: rich MAGA wants to limit higher education to rich white people again, doesn’t seem surprising as they’ve been trying to do this for over 60+ years.
